[Age-related changes of otoacoustic emission].

The aim of the study was to assess age-related changes of the transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) as well as to evaluate age-related changes of DPOAE suppression in adult subjects with normal hearing and presbycusis. Only women participated in the study: 26 young women with normal hearing (20-31 years old) were included into the first group; the second group consisted of 28 elderly (60-74 years old) with normal hearing; the third group included 28 elderly women with presbycusis (mild-to-moderate hearing loss). Age-related decrease…

Interactive effects of aging with noise induced hearing loss.

Aging is associated with a down-regulation in metabolism, which may underlie an increased sensitivity to stress agents and a decreased repair of tissues following stress. In the auditory system this could lead to increased sensitivity to noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) with age. This study examines the effects of high intensity noise exposure (0.5-40 kHz noise at 108 dB SPL for 45 min) on young and old normal (CBA/Ca) mice and young premature presbycusis (C57BL/6) mice. Tone evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR) audiograms were obtained before and after the exposure. The animals were sacr…

Quantitative evaluation of cochlear neurons and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction of spiral ganglion cells in humans with a peripheral loss of nerve fibres.

Quantitative data on human cochlear neuronal elements were collected from various regions in five patients with high-tone hearing loss due to presbycusis and in two patients with normal hearing. The number of nerve fibers was assessed in the spiral lamina and in the inner acoustic meatus together with counts of spiral ganglion cells. The results show that the number of neurons decreased peripherally, i.e., with increasing distance from the central nervous system in patients with high-tone hearing loss due to presbycusis. In two patients with normal hearing no significant difference in the numb…

Characterization of hearing loss in aged type II diabetics.

Presbycusis - age-related hearing loss - is the number one communicative disorder and a significant chronic medical condition of the aged. Little is known about how type II diabetes, another prevalent age-related medical condition, and presbycusis interact. The present investigation aimed to comprehensively characterize the nature of hearing impairment in aged type II diabetics. Hearing tests measuring both peripheral (cochlea) and central (brainstem and cortex) auditory processing were utilized. The majority of differences between the hearing abilities of the aged diabetics and their age-matc…

The Stria Vascularis: Renewed Attention on a Key Player in Age-Related Hearing Loss.

Age-related hearing loss (HL), or presbycusis, is a complex and heterogeneous condition, affecting a significant portion of older adults and involving various interacting mechanisms. Metabolic presbycusis, a type of age-related HL, is characterized by the dysfunction of the stria vascularis, which is crucial for maintaining the endocochlear potential necessary for hearing. Although attention on metabolic presbycusis has waned in recent years, research continues to identify strial pathology as a key factor in age-related HL. This narrative review integrates past and recent research, bridging fi…

Age-related increase in PKC gamma expression in the cochlear nucleus of hearing impaired C57BL/6J and BALB/c mice.

Age-dependent alteration in cellular signaling is implicated in the onset of age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). The gamma subtype of protein kinase C (PKCγ) is a PKC isoenzyme exclusively expressed in central nervous system but its potential role in the presbycusis remains unclear. Using two presbycusis-like animal models (C57BL/6J strain and BALB/c strain), the auditory thresholds were assessed by auditory brainstem response (ABR) in young (2-month-old), adult (8-month-old) and old (24-month-old) groups, and the localization and expression of PKCγ in the cochlear nucleus (CN) was examine…

High frequency audiometry. Clinical aspects.

For 2 years past a previously described quasi-free-field high frequency audiometer delivering pure tones from 4 to 20 kHz has been incorporated in the audiological test battery. By this technique it is possible to obtain reliable and reproducible thresholds above the age of 8--9 years. In several case histories it is illustrated how high frequency audiometry (HFA) contributes to a better audiological diagnostic and it is predicted that HFA is of value in research studies on presbycusis, ototoxicity, noise vulnerability, and in hereditary studies on deafness. The physiological presbycusis deman…

Fibronectin-like immunoreactivity of the basilar membrane of celloidin-embedded human temporal bone sections.

Dysfunction of the mechanical properties of the basilar membrane is a potential cause of presbycusis. In cases of minimal sensorineural or strial degeneration it is believed to play a major role. The membrane has been shown to be partly composed of fibronectin. Fibronectin immunoreactivity is diminished in aged rats. Mesothelial cell line the perilymphatic surface of the membrane and are reduced in number in the aged rat cochlea. Fibronectin immunoreactivity was examined in human temporal bone sections (6 months to 92 years old). Hematoxylin and eosin stained section (17 to 97 years) were immu…

Hearing thresholds of a non-noise-exposed population in Dundee.

In order to provide a control population for a previous investigation of noise-induced hearing loss in a population of female jute weavers (Taylor, Pearson, Mair, and Burns, 1965) a survey was conducted on the hearing thresholds of 296 school teachers in Dundee, Scotland, by pure tone earphone listening. This population, although not exposed to industrial noise, is subjected to city noise and differs, therefore, from the rural population of Hinchcliffe (1959), whose presbycusis data have been used in previous studies. The results show that Dundee female school teachers do not conform to Britis…

Key genes and potential drugs in age-related hearing loss: transcriptome analysis of cochlear hair cells in old mice.

This study aimed to dig new molecular mechanisms and medications for age-related hearing loss (ARHL or presbycusis) by extracting common results of publicly available datasets. Based on five datasets (GSE153882, GSE121856, GSE98070, GSE45026, and GSE98071) in studies of cochlear hair cells, we explored the interrelationships among presbycusis-related genes, including gene interactions, enrichment analysis, miRNA-mRNA matching pairs, and potential new drugs. Together, there were 25 common increased mRNAs. A total of 183 drugs can simultaneously target 11 of these mRNAs. In the interaction netwo…

Efferent projections of a physiologically characterized region of the inferior colliculus of the young adult CBA mouse.

The present investigation is part of an ongoing series of studies aimed at discerning the neural bases of presbycusis. Presbycusis is a sensory perceptual disorder involving loss of high-pitch hearing and reduced ability to process biologically relevant acoustic signals in noisy environments. The purpose of the present experiment was to delineate the efferent projections of a functionally characterized region of the dorsomedial inferior colliculus (IC, auditory midbrain) in young, adult CBA mice. The CBA strain's progressive loss of hearing over its lifespan approximates many aspects of the mi…

Genetics of Postlingual Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Literature and clinical practice around adult-onset hearing loss (HL) has traditionally focused on environmental risk factors, including noise exposure, ototoxic drug exposure, and cardiovascular disease. The most common diagnosis in adult-onset HL is presbycusis. However, the age of onset of presbycusis varies, and patients often describe family history of HL as well as individual variation in progression and severity. In recent years, there has been accumulating evidence of gene-environment interactions underlying adult cases of HL. Susceptibility loci for age-related HL have been identified…

[Do hearing aids live up to their promises?].

The main type of acquired hearing impairment is presbycusis (age-related hearing impairment). In presbycusis, mainly the high tones are no longer heard properly. In the Netherlands, approximately 2 million people are hard of hearing. About one third of all hearing impaired people have 1 or 2 hearing aids. 90% of the group of hearing aid users consists of people over 65. 15% of hearing aid users never or rarely use their hearing aid. The main complaint of hearing aid users is a reduced understanding of speech in noise. When the hearing impaired start to avoid a noisy setting, this can lead to s…

Association between osteoporosis and otosclerosis in women.

Similarities between osteoporosis and otosclerosis have been noted, including a similar association with the COL1A1 gene. Herein, the authors explore the possible clinical relationship between these two common disorders of bone. In this retrospective study, the medical charts of 100 women aged 50 through 75 years who had undergone stapedectomy for otosclerosis were reviewed and the prevalence of osteoporosis in these women was noted. Similarly, the prevalence of osteoporosis was determined in a control group of 100 women aged 50 to 75 years with presbycusis. Fifteen of 100 women with otosclero…

Cochlear microcirculation in young and old gerbils.

Human postmortem studies as well as epidemiologic investigations have implicated the peripheral vascular system as one of the etiologic factors of presbycusis. This study uses the surface dissection microsphere method for regional cochlear blood flow analysis and morphometric techniques for quantifying capillary density in the stria vascularis. In this study 11 old and 10 young gerbils were used. Our results indicate that blood flow in the cochlea was decreased in the old gerbils. This decrease was most obvious in the lateral portion (stria vascularis). The decrease of blood flow in older anim…

The Influence of Aging, Hearing, and Tinnitus on the Morphology of Cortical Gray Matter, Amygdala, and Hippocampus.

Age related hearing loss (presbycusis) is a natural process represented by elevated auditory thresholds and decreased speech intelligibility, especially in noisy conditions. Tinnitus is a phantom sound that also potentially leads to cortical changes, with its highest occurrence coinciding with the clinical onset of presbycusis. The aim of our project was to identify age, hearing loss and tinnitus related structural changes, within the auditory system and associated structures. Groups of subjects with presbycusis and tinnitus (22 subjects), with only presbycusis (24 subjects), young tinnitus pa…

Decreased Modulation of Population Correlations in Auditory Cortex Is Associated with Decreased Auditory Detection Performance in Old Mice.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) affects one-third of the world's population. One hallmark of presbycusis is difficulty hearing in noisy environments. Presbycusis can be separated into two components: the aging ear and the aging brain. To date, the role of the aging brain in presbycusis is not well understood. Activity in the primary auditory cortex (A1) during a behavioral task is because of a combination of responses representing the acoustic stimuli, attentional gain, and behavioral choice. Disruptions in any of these aspects can lead to decreased auditory processing. To investigate h…
