Dopamine, acetylcholine, and GABA effects in acute dystonia in primates.

Neurological side effects associated with neuroleptic drugs result from a complex interaction of multiple neurotransmitters. To clarify the etiology of neuroleptic-induced acute dystonic reactions, monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were treated with haloperidol at doses sufficient to evoke dystonia, and the effects of agents that influenced dopaminergic, cholinergic, or GABAergic neurotransmitters were evaluated. Apomorphine, a dopamine (DA) agonist, and biperiden, an acetylcholine (ACh) antagonist, decreased acute dystonia, whereas alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine (AMPT), an inhibitor of DA synthesis,

Delayed-onset pulmonary insufficiency in primates resuscitated from hemorrhagic shock.

Forty-one unanesthetized cynomolgus monkeys were subjected to 2 hours of hemorrhagic hypotension at various mean arterial pressures (MAP) between 40 and 60 mm Hg. Resuscitation and maintenance of MAP were provided by lactated Ringer's solution and homologous blood. Thirty-eight per cent (57% of those surviving greater than 24 hours) developed a delayed-onset (18 to 24 hours) pulmonary insufficiency in spite of good urinary output, and which did not respond to furosemide. The group in which this caused death (24%) showed significantly decreased PaO2, PaCO2, dynamic compliance, and FECO2, and in

Loa loa: experimental infection in two species of African primates.

Four species of primates, baboon (Papio anubis), patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas), green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) and chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) were inoculated with third-stage larvae of a human strain of Loa loa from Cameroon, West African. The baboon and patas monkeys developed patent infections after 135 to 148 days; the green monkeys and chimpanzee did not. In each animal which became patent, microfilaremia rose rapidly to high levels. In the baboon, but not in the patas monkeys, there was a suppression of microfilaremia during the 4th month of patency. After splenectomy, micro

An outbreak of infection by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in nonhuman primates.

Between October 1970 and June 1971, at the National Center for Primate Biology, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis of serotypes I-B and III was isolated from 9 monkeys (one during life and 8 at necropsy) of the following species: Macaca cynomolgus, Macaca nemestrina, Macaca radiata and Cercocebus fulliginosus. All these animals had characteristic gastrointestinal lesions consisting of superficial erosions or ulcerations with masses of gram-negative coccobacilli and an acute inflammatory exudate. Involvement of mesenteric nodes, livers and spleens by similar lesions was common. A more granulomatous re

Gastrointestinal parasites of captive and free-roaming primates at the Afi Mountain Primate Conservation Area in Calabar, Nigeria and their zoonotic implications.

A study on the gastrointestinal parasites among free-living and captive primates at the Afi Mountain, Primate Conservation Area in Calabar, Nigeria was undertaken for the first time to ascertain their zoonotic implications. Faecal samples were subjected to direct smear, floatation, quantitative estimation of helminth eggs (epg) and oocysts (opg), larval isolation and identification by modified Baerman's technique and oocyst sporulation for specie identification. Out of the 108 primates examined, 75(69.44%) were found to be shedding the ova and oocysts of several gastrointestinal parasites of w

Use of Nonhuman Primates in Periodontal Disease Research: Contribution of the Caribbean Primate Research Center and Cayo Santiago Rhesus Colony.

This review article provides a historical summary regarding the use, value, and validity of the nonhuman primate model of periodontal disease. The information provided cites results regarding the features of naturally occurring periodontitis in various nonhuman primate species, as well as the implementation of a model of experimental periodontitis. Clinical similarities to human disease are discussed, as well as the use of these models to document physiological and pathophysiological tissue changes in the periodontium related to the initiation and progression of the disease. Additionally, the

Molecular heterogeneity of the non-human primate cochlea.

Unraveling the intricate composition and function of the cochlea is paramount to comprehending the mechanisms underlying sound perception and the pathogenesis of auditory disorders. The mammalian cochlea displays a highly organized structure, which contributes to the diversity and complexity of auditory processing. However, the cellular intricacies in non-human primates remain largely unexplored. In the present study, we employed high-throughput transcriptomic sequencing to profile over 36,701 nuclei across virtually all cochlear cell types in both juvenile and adult Macaca fascicularis at sin

Primate Play and the Classificatory Making of Human Nature.

Primate play is often interpreted as a developmental activity through which immature individuals acquire capacities used later in life. This essay uses play to examine a wider process in behavioral research: how classification helps produce behavioral data and shapes the explanations those data can support. It asks how juvenile actions are classified as play and become evidence for claims about development, evolution, and "human nature." I argue that the same analogies to adult behavior that help recognize and organize juvenile actions as play later reappear in explanations of the roles or cap

First Evidence of Microplastic Ingestion by an Arboreal Primate.

Here we report the first evidence of microplastic ingestion by arboreal primates. We found green-colored microplastic fiber filaments (< 5 mm) in the stomachs of two red howler monkey (Alouatta juara) individuals from central Amazonian várzea forests during seasonal floods. We infer that the plastic particles may have been derived from the decomposition of ghost nets (abandoned fishing nets) deposited on trees during annual flooding of the várzea forests. Our findings highlight the need for further research to assess the extent of plastic ingestion by forest-dwelling species and the possible c

Vitamin C conveys geroprotection on primate ovaries.

Ovarian aging plays a pivotal role in female reproductive health, with implications for treatment strategies and quality of life. However, the potential of a single pharmaceutical agent to mitigate primate ovarian aging remains largely unexplored. Our 3.3-year study in monkeys demonstrates that oral vitamin C has geroprotective effects against ovarian aging. Vitamin C diminishes key aging biomarkers, including oxidative stress and follicular depletion. Using a single-cell transcriptomic clock, we show that vitamin C can reduce the biological age of oocytes by 1.35 years and somatic cells by 5.

Metabolic bone disease in an extinct neotropical primate.

OBJECTIVE: This work evaluates the potential presence of bone disease in an extinct primate from late Pleistocene of Brazil. MATERIALS: The skull and post crania of an extinct platyrrhine primate, curated by the Museu de Ciências Naturais PUC, Brazil. METHODS: Pathological changes were noted via analysis of radiographic images and CT of the affected bones. RESULTS: The lesions noted include cortical thickening, sclerosis, and coarse trabeculae in the skull and long bones. CONCLUSIONS: The features observed support the diagnosis of metabolic bone disease with lesions comparable to those see

Equilibrium Mechanical Properties of the Nonhuman Primate Cervix.

Cervical remodeling is critical for a healthy pregnancy. Premature tissue changes can lead to preterm birth (PTB), and the absence of remodeling can lead to post-term birth, causing significant morbidity. Comprehensive characterization of cervical material properties is necessary to uncover the mechanisms behind abnormal cervical softening. Quantifying cervical material properties during gestation is challenging in humans. Thus, a nonhuman primate (NHP) model is employed for this study. In this study, cervical tissue samples were collected from Rhesus macaques before pregnancy and at three ges

Nonhuman primate models of pediatric viral diseases.

Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death in infants and children under 5 years of age. In utero exposure to viruses can lead to spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, congenital abnormalities or other developmental defects, often resulting in lifelong health sequalae. The underlying biological mechanisms are difficult to study in humans due to ethical concerns and limited sample access. Nonhuman primates (NHP) are closely related to humans, and pregnancy and immune ontogeny in infants are very similar to humans. Therefore, NHP are a highly relevant model for understanding fetal and pos

Patterns of integration and modularity in the primate skeleton: a review.

The question of how complex morphologies evolve, given constraints imposed by genetic, developmental and functional factors, has been a topic of inquiry for many decades. In the mid-twentieth century the study of morphological trait covariation, and the implications of this for evolutionary diversification, was developed under the general concept of "morphological integration". Given the polygenic inheritance model underlying quantitative skeletal traits, and the existence of differential pleiotropic effects, it is assumed that variation in the genotype to phenotype map will lead to the emerge
