Previous research has suggested an association between emotional and behavioral problems and asthma in school-aged children. However, research on the relation between emotional and behavioral problems during preschool years and subsequent asthma is lacking. We aimed to estimate the association between emotional and behavioral problems during preschool years and the risk of subsequent asthma among children in Sweden. In this longitudinal cohort study, we used data on children (n = 6269), 3-5 years of age, whose mothers, fathers and/or preschool teachers had responded to the Strengths and Diffic

This study aimed to examine: (a) behavioral and emotional problem trajectories of children (in middle and late childhood) and adolescents with intellectual disability, and (b) the influence of parenting behaviors and the parent-child relationship on these trajectories. Participants were primary caregivers (N = 350) of children/adolescents with intellectual disability who were 10 years or older in Wave 1, 2, or 3 and under 16 years by Wave 3 of a longitudinal families study. Measures of child behavioral and emotional problems, parenting behavior, the parent-child relationship, and parent psycho

This study explored the latent heterogeneity of emotion regulation strategies among adolescents and their associations with problem behaviors. Using a sample of Chinese middle school students, we identified distinct profiles of emotion regulation strategies through latent profile analysis. Participants were asked to complete the Emotion Regulation Scale (ERS), the eleven-item Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale (KADS-11), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale (GAD-7), the Ten-Item Internet Gaming Disorder Test (IGDT-10) and the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP). Results revealed four sub…

Few studies have empirically tested if trait and behavioral impulsivity hinder treatment engagement (TE), which is unfortunate since TE is crucial for treatment success. Therefore, this study collected data from 16- to 17-year-old males (n = 322) and females (n = 110) residing in Flemish youth detention centers or residential (secured) care institutions. Dimensions of TE (i.e., readiness to change, bond with staff, collaboration on goals and tasks, and therapeutic engagement) and trait impulsivity (i.e., positive and negative urgency, sensation seeking, lack of premeditation, and lack of perse

UNLABELLED: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is commonly associated with sleep disturbances. Sleep disruption can contribute to difficulties in a child's life and, therefore, can be an important determinant of their quality of life. This study uses data from the large multisite Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) database to examine the relationship between sleep and behavior in children with ADHD. We hypothesized that shorter and more interrupted sleep would relate to increased problem behaviors such as inattention and social diff…

OBJECTIVE: The proliferation of gambling advertising has raised concerns about its effects on gambling behavior, particularly among vulnerable populations such as highest risk gamblers. This study examines the influence of gambling advertising on attitudes and intentions to gamble on a large sample of gamblers in France.
METHOD: We used an online questionnaire in a cross-sectional design, with data collected between February 15 and April 30, 2021. Participants were recruited through a single recruitment channel, namely the client mailing list of the Française des Jeux, resulting in a final sa

Previous research links risky sexual behavior (RSB) to externalizing problems and to substance use, but little research has been conducted on relationships between internalizing problems (INT) and RSB. The current study addresses that literature gap, using both a twin sample from Colorado (N = 2567) and a second twin sample from Minnesota (N = 1131) in attempt to replicate initial results. We explored the hypothesis that the latent variable INT would be more strongly associated with the latent variable RSB for females than for males, examining relationships between INT and RSB via phenotypic c

Psychopathic traits in community and referred youths are strongly associated with severe externalizing problems and low prosocial behavior. However, less is known about the mechanisms that may link youth psychopathy and these outcomes. Social dominance orientation (SDO), defined as the general individual orientation toward unequal and dominant/subordinate relationships, might represent a valuable construct to explore to better understand the association between psychopathic traits, externalizing problems, and prosocial behavior. Based on this, the current study aimed to investigate the relatio

Internalizing and externalizing behavior problems are associated with a variety of negative child outcomes, but these conclusions have been drawn from research that usually compares children in families with two biological, married parents to all other family types. We compare behavior problems across two-parent, single-mother, and single-father families, which allows us to explore competing gender theories as possible explanations for why child behavior outcomes may be different across these three categories. Results from analyses of the UK Millennium Cohort Study suggest that while children

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between parental age, and behavioral, cognitive and brain differences in the children.
METHOD: Data with children aged 9-11 of 8709 mothers with parental age 15-45 years were analyzed from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. A general linear model was used to test the associations of the parental age with brain structure, and behavioral and cognitive problems scores.
RESULTS: Behavioral and cognitive problems were greater in the children of the younger mothers, and were associated with lower volumes of cortical regions in the childr

Although positive parenting behavior is central to efficacious interventions for child conduct problems (CP), studies of youth CP have focused mostly on negative parenting behavior. That is, few studies have examined dimensions of positive parenting behavior (e.g., positive reinforcement, involvement) as independent predictors of CP and even fewer have investigated their potential moderation by callous-unemotional (CU) traits. A sample of 184 6-9 year-old children with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was followed prospectively for two years. Controlling for baseline

Studies from high-income countries report associations of preeclampsia (PE) with reduced cognitive function and adverse behavioural outcomes in children. We examined these associations in Indian children aged 5-7 years. Children of mothers with PE (n=74) and without PE (non-PE; n=234) were recruited at delivery at Bharati Hospital, Pune, India. The cognitive performance was assessed using 3 core tests from the Kaufman Assessment Battery and additional tests including Verbal fluency, Kohs block design, and Coding A (from Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children). The parent-reported Strengths a

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and physical punishment (ie, spanking) are unique risk factors for behavior problems in early childhood, and whether ACEs moderate the associations of spanking with child behavior problems.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted prospective, longitudinal analyses on 2380 families in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Mothers reported outcomes of externalizing and internalizing behavior problems at age 5 years; and the main predictors, ACEs and spanking, at age 3 years. ACEs included 9 items: physical abuse, emotional abuse,

Little is known about the developmental course of informant discrepancies in adolescent aggressive behavior problems, though whether aggression increases or decreases over time depends on reporter. Evaluating discrepancies longitudinally can uncover patterns of agreement/disagreement between reporters across time and determine contexts that give rise to these differences. This study addresses longitudinal informant discrepancies by examining parent-report and adolescent report of adolescent aggressive behavior problems over time and further investigates possible contextual factors related to t

AIM: At arrival in new home country, internationally adopted children often have intestinal parasites. International adoptees also exhibit more behavioral problems than their biological peers. We examined whether intestinal parasite infections in international adoptees on arrival in Finland are associated with their later behavioral and emotional problems.
METHODS: Data for this study were sourced from the Finnish Adoption Study (FinAdo) based on parental questionnaires for all internationally adopted children under 18 years (n = 1450) who arrived in Finland from 1985 to 2007. A total of 1293

BACKGROUND: Severe malocclusions appear in up to 20 per cent of the population. Many neuropsychiatric diseases are likely to have a neurodevelopmental, partially genetic background with their origins as early as fetal life. However, the possible relationship between neurodevelopmental disorders and severe malocclusions is unclear. The aim of this study was in a population-based setting (270 000 inhabitants) to investigate whether patients with severe malocclusions have more mental and behavioural disorders and growth or speech problems than controls without severe malocclusion.

Gambling is a widespread phenomenon during adolescence. Among different risk factors involved in the onset of adolescent gambling behaviors, one factor that is studied is the sensation seeking personality trait. However, the literature is heterogeneous and a direct relationship between sensation seeking and gaming behaviors has not always been highlighted. This suggests that the relationship can be influenced by other factors. In particular, we explored the moderating role of externalizing problems in this relationship. A total of 363 adolescents (232 males and 131 females) aged 14 to 20 (M =

BACKGROUND: A few studies related to pediatric behavior have measured secondhand smoke exposure in children using valid objective biochemical markers. We aimed at investigating the associations between current and cumulative exposure to tobacco smoke, measured both subjectively and objectively, and behavioral problems in children.
METHODS: Subjects were 437 Japanese children, aged 3-6 years in 2006. Exposure to tobacco smoke was evaluated from a parent-administered questionnaire and urinary cotinine concentrations. The cotinine concentrations were measured using first-void morning urine by li
