Prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among gynecologic surgeons performing laparoscopic procedures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal discomfort is associated with repetitive movements and constrained body positions. The current meta-analysis was performed to determine the global prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among gynecologic surgeons who perform laparoscopy. METHODS: Sources included Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials, and Google Scholar. Articles published between 1980 and 2022 were considered. Studies that assessed self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms were included. Relevant data were extracted and

Pain management for the Nuss procedure: comparison between erector spinae plane block, thoracic epidural, and control.

OBJECTIVE: Pectus excavatum is a congenital deformity characterized by a caved-in chest wall. Repair requires surgery. The less invasive Nuss procedure is very successful, but postoperative pain management is challenging and evolving. New pain management techniques to reduce opioid reliance include the erector spinae plane (ESP) block. We retrospectively examined opioid consumption after Nuss procedure comparing three pain management techniques: ESP block, thoracic epidural (TE), and patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared pain management outcomes

Less postoperative pain and more frequent recurrence: Can this dilemma caused by the stapled haemorrhoidopexy procedure be avoided?

BACKGROUND: Although early studies highlighted the advantages of stapled haemorrhoidopexy (SH) (minimal pain and a rapid return to work), long-term follow-up revealed that residual skin tags, external prolapsed haemorrhoids and recurrence were frequent. The aim of our study was to investigate whether the above-mentioned problems could be prevented by performing additional interventions (AIs) during SH. We compared SH with and without AIs in terms of pain, wound-healing time, patient satisfaction and recurrence. METHODS: A total of 106 patients with Grade III-IV haemorrhoids diagnosed between

Thiamylal Plus Pentazocine Shows Similar Efficacy as Ketamine Plus Midazolam for Painful Procedures in Children With Leukemia.

This retrospective study compared the use of thiamylal plus pentazocine (TP) to ketamine plus midazolam (KM) in children with leukemia who were undergoing bone marrow aspiration and/or intrathecal chemotherapy. A total of 268 procedures in 35 children with leukemia were retrospectively analyzed for efficacy and adverse events. All procedures were successfully completed without severe adverse events. TP induced significantly faster sedation. The incidents of desaturation were significantly greater in the TP group, but were transient and recovered by oxygen supplementation alone. Therefore, TP c

Oral glucose efficacy on neonate's pain responses at the NICU: A quasi experimental trial of two clinical procedures.

AIM: This research was undertaken with the purpose of testing two research hypotheses regarding the efficacy of 10% oral glucose solution on procedural pain associated with venepuncture and nasopharyngeal suctioning within three neonatal intensive care units (NICU). The hypotheses were formulated from previous conclusions reached by other researchers highlighting the efficacy of sucrose solutions on neonates' pain responses during minor painful procedures. METHOD: A quasi-experimental trial utilising a time series design with one group was used. Data from a total of 90 neonates included 60 ne…

Inhaled methoxyflurane for pain and anxiety relief during burn wound care procedures: an Australian case series.

Pain is a common and significant feature of burn injury. The use of intravenous opioids forms the mainstay of procedural burn pain management, but in an outpatient setting, the demand for novel agents that do not require parenteral access, are easy to administer and have a rapid onset are urgently needed. One such agent is the inhaled anaesthetic agent, methoxyflurane (MF). The aim of this study was to conduct a pilot investigation into the clinical effectiveness of MF inhaler on pain and anxiety scores in patients undergoing burn wound care procedures in an outpatient setting. A prospective c

Perioperative pain management of a complex orthopedic surgical procedure with double continuous nerve blocks in a burned child.

UNLABELLED: The use of catheters for continuous nerve blocks has been established in children, although in most series only one catheter was used. We report a case of a 3-yr-old child who underwent a toe-to-finger transfer managed with 2 regional catheters: axillary and sciatic. A pain score of 0 was noted during the entire study period. The total dose of bupivacaine was limited to an acceptable range, and the child recovered completely. This report adds to growing evidence in favor of the safety and efficacy of continuous peripheral nerve blocks in pediatric patients. IMPLICATIONS: Double co

[The routine sampling procedure for PKU should be changed. Venous puncture is less painful than heel lancing].

All newborns in Sweden are screened for phenylketonuria (PKU), among other things, blood usually being sampled by heel lancing. Because it is unnecessarily painful, however, this form of sampling in newborns has recently been questioned. There is reason to recommend sampling from a dorsal hand vein as the method of choice for PKU screening purposes.

Virtual Reality for Pain Management During Repeated Pediatric Laser Procedures: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Lasers have wide applications in medicine but are associated with pain and anxiety, particularly in younger patients. Pain mitigation is often limited to topical anesthetics in the outpatient setting. Distraction techniques are limited by the need for ocular protection, which can include eye patches that completely occlude vision. Virtual reality (VR) is effective at managing procedural pain and anxiety during other short medical procedures and is a promising tool for this population. OBJECTIVE: This trial aims to assess the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of the virtual reality…

Intercostal Nerve Cryoablation for Postoperative Pain Control After the Nuss Procedure in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Nuss procedure is the standard technique for pectus excavatum repair. Despite its minimally invasive nature, this procedure is associated with significant postoperative pain and high opioid consumption. Intercostal nerve cryoablation (INC) has emerged as an adjunct to multimodal analgesia (MMA) to improve pain control, reduce opioid use, and shorten length of stay (LOS). This systematic review aims to assess INC outcomes following the Nuss procedure in pediatric patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Lib

Hidden risk of gadolinium-based contrast agents during interventional pain medicine procedures: a retrospective chart review.

INTRODUCTION: Epidural steroid injections and epidural blood patches commonly involve the injection of a small amount of radiocontrast media under fluoroscopy to properly identify the target tissue or anatomic space and prevent off-target or intravascular delivery of therapeutic or diagnostic drugs. Iodinated low osmolar non-ionic contrast media is the standard preparation used as it is considered safe and cost-effective, but gadolinium-based preparations have been used as an alternative for patients with an 'iodine'-related or radiocontrast media allergy label to prevent hypersensitivity reac

Intercostal Nerve Cryoablation as an Effective Pain Management Strategy in the Nuss Procedure: Reducing Opioid Use and Hospital Stay.

INTRODUCTION: Erector spinae plane (ESP) blocks, thoracic epidural, and patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) have all been used for perioperative pain management in the Nuss procedure without a consensus on what modality produces the best outcomes. Intercostal nerve cryoablation (INC) is a relatively new modality that involves freezing the nerves to prevent pain during recovery. Our hypothesis is that using INC for the Nuss procedure will decrease opioid use, pain scores, and length of stay (LOS) but will increase cost compared with ESP block, thoracic epidural, and PCA.
