From 1970-1984 116 pregnant diabetic patients were monitored and delivered at the University Hospital of Freiburg, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During these 15 years, a decrease in maternal and fetal complications was observed. Today the risk of some complications in diabetic pregnancy is not greater than that of pregnancy in nondiabetic women. Eleven cases of renovascular hypertension treated by the authors during the 10-year period from 1974 to 1984 are summarized in this paper, referring particularly to its etiology and prognosis. In a randomly selected sample of 559 subjects 65 years and over living in the community and in institutions the prevalence of urinary incontinence was found to be 11.6%. In those 80 years and over the prevalence rose to 21.7%. Those with dementia were more likely to be incontinent than those with normal mental function. Follow up audiograms were done at periods up to 15 years after sudden deafness on 69 patients. The average value of the pure tone threshold continued to decrease linearally at about 1.15 dB per year. In a few cases (21%) however, improvement in hearing was observed even up to 12 years after sudden deafness. 28.6% of the patients recovered later without having shown any improvement in hearing during treatment with infusions. On the other hand 8.3% of the patients had a relapse. The immediate improvement in hearing following in patient treatment showed no correlation to the subsequent audiogram.

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is considered to be a benign disease by some, while others think it is a more serious illness which required similar treatment to giant cell arteritis (GCA). The progress of 85 patients with PMR who presented to a district general hospital has been studied in an attempt to study this relationship. Thirty-eight patients had PMR alone, and 14 developed PMR and GCA within 1 month. Thirty-six cases of herpes zoster complicated by facial paralysis (the Ramsay Hunt syndrome) seen over 10 years were reviewed to determine the subjective degree of recovery (ascertained by questionnaire) and residual disability (ascertained by re-examination). Eighteen patients made a full recovery, most within three months; 14 patients were left with only mild residual signs. In only four patients was the final result regarded as unsatisfactory. Outcome was not adversely influenced by age. The facial paralysis of the Ramsay Hunt syndrome thus carries a generally favourable prognosis.

105 babies with neonatal hepatitis were studied carefully and followed for up to 11 1/2 years. Ascertainment was complete for those with severe and persistent jaundice, but less complete for mild or anicteric cases. Prognosis was found to be poor (40% death or cirrhosis) in babies with perisitently acholic stools, but relatively good (less than 15% death or cirrhosis) in those with jaundice which was less persistent and less obstructive. Nine examples of polyostotic histiocytosis without visceral involvement with long-term follow-up are presented. Only one patient had the complete Hand-Schüller-Christian disease triad of multiple osteolytic lesions, diabetes insipidus, and exophthalmos. During the period 1938-70 there were 303 patients at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, diagnosed as suffering from Crohn's disease. Of these, 82 have been excluded, leaving 221 with a firm diagnosis.
