Reactive arthritis due to zoophilic (canine) sexual intercourse.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is defined as a joint inflammation triggered by a distant infection, with no cultivable microbes in the joints. Although efforts have been made to characterize the microorganism linked to ReA, no definite common feature has so far emerged. Here we present a case of ReA which occurred after a zoophilic (canine genus) sexual intercourse.

High variability of HLA-B27 alleles in ankylosing spondylitis and related spondyloarthropathies in the population of northern Spain.

The distribution of B27 alleles (B*2701-23) was characterized by PCR-SSP in ankylosing spondylitis and related spondyloarthropathies (SpA) in a sample of B27 positive patients from northern Spain. Six B27 alleles were identified: B*2705,02,03,07,08 and B*2713. B*2705 and 02 were the most common alleles in the SpA studied: ankylosing spondylitis (AS) (n = 89), reactive arthritis (ReA) (n = 11), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) (n = 29), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (n = 21). B*2707 and B*2708 were found in PsA patients and B*2703 in one patient with IBD. B*2713 was identified in a healthy cont

Further characterization of 19 cases of rea(21q21q) and delineation as isochromosomes or Robertsonian translocations in Down syndrome.

We have used 9 conventional RFLPs and 6 dinucleotide repeat polymorphisms on chromosome 21q to demonstrate that 17 of 19 cases of rea(21q21q) were consistent with isochromosomes i(21q) with the remaining 2 being true Robertsonian translocations. Eight of the 17 isochromosomes were of maternal origin and 9 cases were paternally derived. The 2 Robertsonian translocations were both maternally derived. Of the 17 isochromosomes, 7 were dicentric [idic(21q)] and 10 were monocentric [i(21q)]. Both rob(21q21q) were monocentric. Our findings agree with those made in 17 previously published cases of rea

Synovial T lymphocyte recognition of organisms that trigger reactive arthritis.

Reactive arthritis (ReA) is believed to be "triggered' by infection with certain bacteria. When the proliferative responses of mononuclear cells (MC) obtained from the synovial fluid (SF) of ReA patients were examined, it was found that they responded maximally to the specific organism responsible for the preceding infection. The response was shown to be due to Class II MHC-restricted T cells by inhibition experiments using cyclosporin A and monoclonal antibodies. Significant SFMC responses to additional organisms associated with ReA were also recorded; since there was no serological evidence

Left and right-handed dyslexic boys: an empirical test of some assumptions of the Geschwind-Behan hypothesis.

Twenty-six dyslexic boys (13 left-handers and 13 right-handers) were tested for hemispheric asymmetry with dichotic listening (DL) and a visual half-field test (VHF). The purpose of the study was an empirical test of the Geschwind-Behan [Proc. natn. Acad. Sci. USA 79, 5097-5100, 1982] hypothesis of a difference in hemispheric asymmetry between left- and right-handed dyslexic boys. Following Geschwind and Behan, left-handedness and dyslexia are caused by a common factor affecting the development of the left hemisphere in utero which results in a right hemisphere dominance. As a consequence, han

A comparative study of the efficacy of four barbiturates as promoters of the development of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase-positive foci in the liver of carcinogen treated rats.

The promoting action of four barbiturates, and their modulation of the promoting action of a choline-devoid (CD) diet was investigated by quantitating the gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT)-positive foci which developed in the liver of rats exposed to a single injection of diethylnitrosamine. Phenobarbital (PHB), pentobarbital (PTB) and amobarbital (AMB), exerted a promoting action, while barbituric acid (BA) had no effect. Addition of PHB or PTB to a CD diet resulted in a synergistic promoting action, but AMB had only an additive effect. Feeding a CD diet to rats caused a stimulation of liver

Experimental dependence on barbiturates. II. Relationship between drug levels in serum and brain and the development of dependence in rats.

Feeding rats on food containing phenobarbital (PhB) (1 AND 2 mg/g) for 13 consecutive days resulted in the inhibition of motor coordination (by rotarod test) for 7 days, followed by a gradual decrease in the inhibition. PhB level in the serum reached a peak on the third day of feeding and then gradually decreased. PhB level in the brain, unlike that in the serum, gradually increased up to the seventh day and then decreased until the thirteenth day of feeding. Thus, alterations of the inhibited rotarod performance were depended on PhB level in the brain rather than on that in the serum. PhB lev

Isotype-specific autoantibody profiles associated with clinical immunological signatures in IgG4-RD.

OBJECTIVES: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) involves elevated serum IgG4 and several autoantigens, but the role of different antibody isotypes in pathogenesis remains unclear. This study systematically characterized isotype‑specific autoantibody responses against representative autoantigens and evaluated their clinical and immunological correlations. METHODS: We enrolled 61 patients with IgG4‑RD, 31 with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 11 with Sjögren's syndrome (SS), and 30 healthy controls (HC). Serum levels of isotype‑specific autoantibodies were measured using in‑house ELISA. Correlati

Vaccination with a CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell epitopes-based recombinant chimeric protein derived from Leishmania infantum proteins confers protective immunity against visceral leishmaniasis.

Vaccination seems to be the best approach to control visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Resistance against infection is based on the development of a Th1 immune response characterized by the production of interferons-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-12 (IL-12), granulocyte-macrophage-colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), among others. A number of antigens have been tested as potential targets against the disease; few of them are able to stimulate human immune cells. In the present study, 1 prediction of MHC class I and II molecules-specific epitopes in the amino acid sequenc

Structure-function properties of hypolipidemic peptides.

This review addresses the structure-function properties of hypolipidemic peptides. The cholesterol-lowering peptide (lactostatin: IIAEK) operates via a new regulatory pathway in the calcium-channel-related mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway of cholesterol degradation. The bile acid binding peptide (soystatin, VAWWMY) inhibits the micellar solubility of cholesterol in vitro and cholesterol absorption in vivo. VVYP is the most effective peptide having hypotriglyceridemic action in globin digests. The suppressive effect of globin digest on postprandial hyperlipidemia has be

Comparative proteomics study of proteins involved in induction of higher rates of cell death in mitoxantrone-resistant breast cancer cells MCF-7/MX exposed to TNF-α.

OBJECTIVES: Resistance to medications is one of the main complications in chemotherapy of cancer. It has been shown that some multidrug resistant cancer cells indicate more sensitivity against cytotoxic effects of TNF-α compared to their parental cells. Our previous findings indicated vulnerability of the mitoxantrone-resistant breast cancer cells MCF-7/MX to cell death induced by TNF-α compared to the parent cells MCF-7. In this study, we performed a comparative proteomics analysis for identification of proteins involved in induction of higher susceptibility of MCF-7/MX cells to cytotoxic eff

Identification of genes associated with the effect of inflammation on the neurotransmission of vascular smooth muscle cell.

Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) accumulation and hypertrophy are common in vascular disorders, and inflammation has a crucial role in the development of these diseases. To investigate the effect of inflammation on the neurotransmission of VSMC, bioinformatic analysis was performed, following next generation sequencing. Genes of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated A7r5 cells and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)-treated A7r5 cells were sequenced via next generation sequencing, and each assay was repeated three times. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained using the NOISeq package in

Mitophagy Increases Resistance against Infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa through the PHB2/PARL/PGAM5/PINK1 Axis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.a) is a common opportunistic pathogen causing serious infection and complications in diverse populations, especially under immunodeficient conditions. Previous studies indicate that mitophagy activation is related to multiple conditions and processes in the human body, including infectious diseases. It has been recently implicated that the PARL-PGAM5-PINK1 axis activates mitophagy, but its regulatory role in pneumonia is unclear. We hypothesize that mitophagy receptor PHB2 orchestrates an autophagic process through PARL and PGAM5 to limit P.a. infection and inflammati

Chlamydia-induced reactive arthritis diagnosed during gout flares: A case report and cumulative effect of inflammatory cytokines on chronic arthritis.

RATIONALE: The pathology of gouty arthritis and reactive arthritis (ReA) partially overlaps, and both diseases are characterized by the production of inflammatory cytokines associated with the activation of monocytes and macrophages. However, the precise cytokine profile of cases with a coexistence of both diseases is unknown, and there are few reports on the course of treatment in patients with both gouty arthritis and ReA. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 39-year-old man with a recurrent episode of gouty arthritis presented prednisolone-resistant polyarthritis with high level of C-reactive protein (CRP)

Restriction Endonuclease Analysis Typing of Clostridium difficile Isolates.

Restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) typing using HindIII enzyme is a highly discriminatory, reproducible, and consistent method of genetic typing of Clostridium difficile (CD) isolates. REA typing analyzes CD whole cellular DNA on two levels of discrimination: REA Group designation and REA Type designation, which distinguishes specific subtypes within the REA Group. This methodology has enabled the tracking of epidemiologically significant CD strains over time and in some cases has allowed documentation of the evolution of previously rare REA Group strains that have subsequently become epi

Characterization of a short isoform of the kidney protein podocin in human kidney.

BACKGROUND: Steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome is a severe hereditary disease often caused by mutations in the NPHS2 gene. This gene encodes the lipid binding protein podocin which localizes to the slit diaphragm of podocytes and is essential for the maintenance of an intact glomerular filtration barrier. Podocin is a hairpin-like membrane-associated protein that multimerizes to recruit lipids of the plasma membrane. Recent evidence suggested that podocin may exist in a canonical, well-studied large isoform and an ill-defined short isoform. Conclusive proof of the presence of this new podoci

Reactive arthritis induced by intravesical BCG therapy for bladder cancer: our clinical experience and systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Intravesical instillation of BCG (ivBCG) is an effective and safe immunotherapy of bladder carcinoma but it may have, as side effect, a reactive arthritis (ReA). The authors describe 5 cases observed during their own clinical experience along with the updated review of the literature on this topic. METHODS: Seventy-three papers were present in the world literature, each reporting almost 1 case for a total of 112 patients. However, the review focused on 61 papers, selected on the basis of reporting suitable for a correct clinical evaluation; thus, a total of 89 patients, including t
