Proprioceptive information is important for balance control yet little is known about how it is used during gait or how a stroke affects its use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of proprioception in controlling balance during gait in healthy participants and after stroke. Twelve healthy and 9 hemiparetic participants walked on an instrumented treadmill in a fully lit room, while whole-body, three-dimensional kinematics were quantified. Vibration was applied continuously or during the stance phase only, on the posterior neck muscles and triceps surae tendon on the non-dominant/pa…

BACKGROUND: To investigate deficiencies in mechanisms of sensorimotor processing and reflexive-voluntary interactions leading to the impaired head position control in primary cervical dystonia.
METHODS: Thirteen patients and 23 healthy controls were subjected to transient, low amplitude, low velocity head-on-trunk, trunk-under-head and whole-body rotations in the horizontal plane. With the instruction not to resist the imposed displacements, resistance to horizontal neck deflections was evaluated.
RESULTS: Patients exhibited a torque offset (bias) in the direction of torticollis before stimu

INTRODUCTION: Human T cell lymphotropic virus type I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) can impact the independence and motricity of patients. The aims of this study were to estimate the effects of physiotherapy on the functionality of patients with HAM/TSP during the stable phase of the disease using proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and to compare two methods of treatment delivery.
METHODS: Fourteen patients with human T cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) were randomly allocated into two groups. In group I (seven patients), PNF was applied by the

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of being overweight or underweight on proprioception at rest and after muscle damaging eccentric exercise. Twelve lean, 12 overweight, and 8 underweight female participants performed an eccentric exercise session using the knee extensor muscles of the dominant leg. Muscle damage indices and proprioception were assessed up to 3 days postexercise. The results indicated that proprioception at baseline of the lean individuals was superior to that of the other 2 groups. The overweight individuals exhibited a smaller knee joint reaction angle to relea…

Humans control their movements using adaptive proprioceptive feedback from muscle afferents. The interaction between proprioceptive reflexes and biomechanical properties of the limb is essential in understanding the etiology of movement disorders. A non-linear neuromuscular model of the wrist incorporating muscle dynamics and neural control was developed to test hypotheses on fixed dystonia. Dystonia entails sustained muscle contractions resulting in abnormal postures. Lack of inhibition is often hypothesized to result in hyperreflexia (exaggerated reflexes), which may cause fixed dystonia. In

PURPOSE: Recent publications on the sensory innervation of wrist ligaments have challenged our understanding of ligaments as mere passive restraints in wrist stability. Mechanoreceptors in ligaments have a role in signaling joint perturbations, in which the afferent information is believed to influence periarticular muscles. The scapholunate interosseous ligament is one of the most richly innervated ligaments in the wrist. The purpose of our study was to investigate the possible existence of a wrist proprioceptive reflex, by which afferent information elicited in the scapholunate interosseous

UNLABELLED: In the present study we evaluated proprioceptive capabilities of the knee joint with a balance test and correlated these findings to parameters which document mechanical stability. We compared 8 conservatively treated and 12 surgically treated patients with ACL-deficient knee joints with a control group of 12 subjects. The balance test was performed with a Kistler force plate. Both the conservatively treated and the surgically treated patients showed significantly higher deviations of their centre of gravity than the control group. This was true not only for the injured leg but als

The general roentgenogram of the cervical spine often shows manifold pathological alterations by patients without any clinical complaints. On the other hand, there are cervical vertigo and different symptoms caused by the cervical spine, its joints, muscles and ligaments without any X-ray manifestation. Nevertheless, some connections are assumed to exist between vertigo and alterations of the cervical spine an assumption supported especially by the frequently successful elimination of cervical troubles by chirotherapy. We compared the X-ray manifestations in patients complaining of vertigo wit

To investigate whether people with unilateral chronic ankle instability (CAI) have deficits in bilateral static and dynamic postural control, ankle muscle strength and ankle proprioception. A total of 31 participants with CAI and 31 non-CAI controls were recruited. Static postural control was assessed using root mean square (RMS) of the plantar centre of pressure (CoP) displacements during single-leg stance. Dynamic postural control was evaluated by measuring the time to stabilisation (TTS) following a single-leg drop onto a force plate. Ankle proprioception and muscle strength were measured u…

Background: Sensorimotor differences have frequently been reported in children with developmental dyslexia, but are often considered secondary or comorbid to phonological deficits. Within an embodied cognition perspective, reading acquisition emerges from dynamic interactions between bodily regulation, multisensory integration, and learning-related neural plasticity. Proprioception contributes to spatial orientation, motor coordination, and perceptual stabilization, while sleep-dependent processes play a critical role in the consolidation and automatization of cognitive and motor skills. Objec…

BACKGROUND: Proprioception dysfunction, including deficits in joint position sense (JPS) and kinesthesia, is a common sequela following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. While previous studies have compared proprioceptive outcomes in ACL-injured patients undergoing different types of surgical reconstruction or repair, their findings have been inconsistent, and a systematic review is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize and evaluate proprioceptive deficits (in JPS and kinesthesia) across different postoperative time points and joint angles in patients undergoing different types of ACL recon…

BACKGROUND: Falling is a concern for both older persons and transtibial prosthesis users (TTPUs), with older TTPUs potentially facing compounded risk. Older adults and TTPUs display foot clearance (FC) behavior that may contribute to increased tripping risk. Further, a person's knowledge of their leg orientation in space (ie proprioception) plays a role in managing FC and is affected by age and prosthesis use.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of walking speed on FC of older TTPUs and the relationship between FC and leg proprioception.
STUDY DESIGN: Twelve unilateral TTPUs and 10 age-matched …

For the purpose of testing shoulder joint proprioception while controlling for axioscapular muscle recruitment, a novel shoulder thoracohumeral (TH) rotation joint position sense (JPS) measurement device was designed. This device was intended to measure shoulder TH rotation, while also implicitly constraining other upper limb degrees of freedom (DOF) and minimizing cutaneous sensation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether joint motion aside from shoulder TH rotation is being captured by the shoulder JPS measurement device. Upper limb kinematics were collected from 32 participants…

Introduction Proprioception is one's capacity to perceive bodily position, alignment, and movement. Several connective tissues, such as skin, ligaments, joint capsules, and muscles in the body, contain proprioceptive sensory receptors. Joint elasticity results from hormonal variations, notably the peak relaxin hormone during pregnancy, which also affects proprioceptive receptors. The musculoskeletal system may be affected by hormones and anatomical changes brought on by pregnancy, including joint laxity and modifications to posture and gait. The capacity to perceive the joint position and move…

Individuals with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) have a (non-psychotic) longstanding desire to amputate or paralyze one or more full … t and implicit judgments about the size and shape of their legs while relying on vision, touch, and proprioception. We hypothesized that BIID participants would mis-estimate the size of their affected leg(s) more than the same leg of controls. Using a multiple single-case analysis, we found no global differences in lower limb representations between BIID partici …
