Changes in cardiovascular function and related psychophysiological pathways in a rat model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

This study was aimed to investigate the cardiovascular function in rats with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the potential association with the activities of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and the medial habenular nucleus (MHb). Multi-channel in vivo recordings were used to simultaneously acquire spontaneous neuronal firing and peripheral physiological indices, and FluoroGold (FG) retrograde tracing technique was used to observe the projections of labeled neurons in the MHb. The results showed that the discharge frequency of RVLM and MHb neurons, the systolic blood pressure

Psychophysiological response to virtual reality and subthreshold posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in recently deployed military.

OBJECTIVE: Subthreshold posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has garnered recent attention because of the significant distress and functional impairment associated with the symptoms as well as the increased risk of progression to full PTSD. However, the clinical presentation of subthreshold PTSD can vary widely and therefore is not clearly defined, nor is there an evidence-based treatment approach. Thus, we aim to further the understanding of subthreshold PTSD symptoms by reporting the use of a virtual combat environment in eliciting distinctive psychophysiological responses associated with PT

The trauma of peer victimization: psychophysiological and emotional characteristics of memory imagery in subjects with social anxiety disorder.

The study investigated the role of an associative information network as a mechanism underlying the relation of peer victimization and social anxiety disorder (SAD). A sample of N = 80 was divided according to diagnosis (SAD vs. no diagnosis) and amount of peer victimization (low vs. high). Responses to memory of a personally experienced aversive social situation and to imagining a standardized negative social situation were assessed. In terms of skin conductance level, subjects with SAD and peer victimization were more reactive to the memory script than the other three groups while responses

Effects of a single bout of walking on psychophysiologic responses and executive function in elderly adults: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a single bout of walking on mood, psychophysiologic responses, and executive function in elderly adults. METHODS: Twenty healthy, elderly adults (10 women and 10 men; mean age 70.50 ± 3.4 years) participated in this study. Mood, as assessed by the Profile of Mood States, and salivary α-amylase activity were examined before and after walking. Executive functions were also evaluated by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. RESULTS: Negative feeling scores such as tension-anxiety, anger-hostility, and confusion significantly improve

Psychophysiological evidence for cortisol-induced reduction in early bias for implicit social threat in social phobia.

The stress hormone cortisol is important for the regulation of social motivational processes. High cortisol levels have been associated with social fear and avoidance, which play an important role in social anxiety disorder (SAD), as does hypervigilant processing of social threat. However, causal effects of cortisol on threat processing in SAD remain unclear. In an event-related potential (ERP) study we investigated the effects of cortisol on task-irrelevant (implicit) processing of social threat in SAD, exploring the temporal dynamics as well as the role of symptom severity and stimulus aware

Increased anxiety during anticipation of unpredictable but not predictable aversive stimuli as a psychophysiologic marker of panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Predictability is a fundamental modulator of anxiety in that the ability to predict aversive events mitigates anxious responses. In panic disorder, persistent symptoms of anxiety are caused by anticipation of the next uncued (unpredictable) panic attack. The authors tested the hypothesis that elevated anxious reactivity, specifically toward unpredictable aversive events, is a psychophysiological correlate of panic disorder. METHOD: Participants were exposed to one condition in which predictable aversive stimuli were signaled by a cue, a second condition in which aversive stimuli we

Different psychophysiological and behavioral responses elicited by frustration in pediatric bipolar disorder and severe mood dysregulation.

OBJECTIVE: Researchers disagree as to whether irritability is a diagnostic indicator for pediatric mania in bipolar disorder. The authors compared the behavioral and psychophysiological correlates of irritability among children with severe mood dysregulation (i.e., nonepisodic irritability and hyperarousal without episodes of euphoric mood) and narrow-phenotype bipolar disorder (i.e., a history of at least one manic or hypomanic episode with euphoric mood) as well as those with no diagnosis (i.e., healthy comparison children). METHOD: Subjects with severe mood dysregulation (N=21) or narrow-p

Relationships between fatty acids and psychophysiological parameters in depressive inpatients under experimentally induced stress.

Fatty acids can influence important cellular and hormonal processes in the human body. Non-adequate contents of fatty acids, e.g., in blood, can cause and/or result in various diseases. In depressive patients, changes in fatty acid concentrations were found (deficits in omega3-fatty acids, in particular). This paper poses the question whether there are any relations between psychophysiological parameters and changes in fatty acid compositions. The concentration of fatty acids in serum of 118 psychiatric inpatients measured directly before and after experimentally induced stress of about 1h wer

The impact of early life stress on psychophysiological, personality and behavioral measures in 740 non-clinical subjects.

Early Life Stress (ELS) has been associated with a range of adverse outcomes in adults, including abnormalities in electrical brain activity [1], personality dimensions [40], increased vulnerability to substance abuse and depression [14]. The present study seeks to quantify these proposed effects in a large sample of non-clinical subjects. Data for the study was obtained from The Brain Resource International Database (six laboratories: two in USA, two in Europe, two in Australia). This study analyzed scalp electrophysiological data (EEG eyes open, closed and target auditory oddball data) and p

Genital vascular responsiveness and sexual feelings in midlife women: psychophysiologic, brain, and genital imaging studies.

The incidence of women's experiences of lack of sexual arousal increases in the years around the natural menopause transition. This raises the questions to what extent are sexual complaints in postmenopausal women related to hormonal changes, and what is the contribution of psychologic and contextual factors to sexual function in this transitional phase of life. This article reviews all published evidence regarding (1) the relation between menopausal status and sexual arousal symptoms, (2) the extent to which these sexual symptoms relate to measured genital vascular responses to sexual stimuli

Psychophysiologic assessment of mental imagery of stressful events in Israeli civilian posttraumatic stress disorder patients.

This study explored the physiological responses of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients to reminders of a stressful event that had preceded the onset of their illness and was not related to its cause: the SCUD missile alarms of the Gulf War. A mental-imagery technique used in previous studies of PTSD was used. Three 30-second audiotapes were presented to each subject, including (1) the Gulf War's missile alarm, (2) a radio announcement of a terrorist attack, and (3) a standardized relaxing scene. Subjects were instructed to imagine each event as vividly as possible while heart rate (H

Psychophysiologic test performance in normal twins and in a pair of identical twins with essential tremor that is suppressed by alcohol.

In a sample of 52 adults male twin pairs (26 MZ, 26DZ) performance in a series of psychophysiologic tests was measured. The intraindividual variability was determined by repetitive tests in the same subjects. In a number of cases the measured parameters proved relatively stable within the same peron; identical twins, however, were no more similar to one another than fraternal twins. In a pair of identical twins with autosomal-dominant essential tremor the degree of the tremor could be effectively reduced by alcohol application.

Affect-induction techniques and psychophysiological response in human studies of eating behavior. A systematic review of recent studies.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying eating behavior is essential for identifying factors involved in its regulation. This review systematizes evidence on affect-induction techniques, their associated physiological responses, and their impact on eating behavior. We searched experimental studies published between 2014 and 2026 in SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that assessed physiological responses to laboratory-induced acute stress or negative affect during eating-related tasks. A total of 43 studies met inclusion criteria. Affect induction techniques included social stress parad

"Gender differences in psychophysiological responses to stress and academic performance: The role of sleep, anxiety, and Heart Rate Variability".

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of stress among university students has become a significant public health concern, with gender differences in psychophysiological responses remaining understudied. This study examined how gender influences stress-related factors and their association with academic performance. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 601 Colombian university students (74.7 % women, aged 15-47). Participants completed online questionnaires assessing sleep habits, personality traits (Big Five Inventory), anxiety (STAI), psychological inflexibility (AAQ-II), solitude (UCLA),

Study protocol: A multimethod psychophysiological randomized controlled trial of a couple therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) sequelae often have ripple effects on victims' families and spouses. Yet there has been a lag in the development and study of couple therapy for PTSD. To fill this gap, we present here a protocol for a study examining the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT), a 15- session couple therapy protocol meant to alleviate PTSD and improve relationship satisfaction, in the Israeli context. The study will be a randomized controlled trial examining outcomes and processes of change via self-report questionnaires, qualitative interviews, and physiol

Kokedama and essential oils had a relaxing psychophysiological effect on Taiwanese women during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, we designed an indoor nature activity program for citizens with a relaxing effect similar to forest bathing to promote their physical and mental health. We integrated an indoor horticultural activity (Kokedama) with the breathing of Pseudotsuga menziesii (P. menziesii) and Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) essential oils (EOs) with the goal of creating a nature-inspired environment in an indoor setting where participants would feel as if immersed in a forest atmosphere. METHODS: Taiwanese women participated in the experiment, using two Saturday

Risk Taking by Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): a Behavioral and Psychophysiological Investigation of Peer Influence.

Adolescents with ADHD demonstrate increased risk-taking behavior (RTB) like substance abuse and dangerous traffic conduct. RTB in adolescence is more likely under peer influence. The current investigation (1) tests the hypothesis that adolescents with ADHD are particularly susceptible to such influence and (2) tests whether groups differed in autonomic reactivity to peer influence. Adolescent boys between 12 and 19 years with (n = 81) and without (n = 99) ADHD performed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task twice. In the peer condition, a highly credible virtual peer manipulation that encouraged risk

Use of a Psychophysiological Script-driven Imagery Experiment to Study Trauma-related Dissociation in Borderline Personality Disorder.

This protocol offers a detailed description of a psychophysiological experiment using script-driven trauma-related imagery and standardized clinical instruments within a comparative design assessing physiological and psychopathological features of individuals with BPD. This method aims at studying the psychological and physiological effects of trauma-related dissociation. Since the psychodiagnostic classification of trauma-related disorders relies on the observation of evolutionarily determined responses to life-threat, an integrated assessment paradigm for the study of reactions to traumatic

Chronic sleep disorder induced by psychophysiological stress induces glucose intolerance without adipose inflammation in mice.

Sleep disturbances are associated with various metabolic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. We had previously established a mouse model of a psychophysiological stress-induced chronic sleep disorder (CSD) characterized by disrupted circadian rhythms of wheel-running activity, core body temperature, and sleep-wake cycles. To evaluate the underlying mechanisms of metabolic disorders induced by CSD, we created mice with CSD for six weeks and fed them with a high-fat diet. Glucose intolerance with hyperglycemia resulted, although plasma insulin levels and body weight increases were identi
