We report the case of a 32-year-old woman presenting with acute extremity ischemia due to thrombosis of a previously undetected popliteal artery aneurysm. The popliteal artery aneurysm was revealed by PST which was indicated for the treatment of thrombosis of the superficial femoral artery. PST was complicated by a peripheral embolism with subsequent severe extremity ischaemia. Immediate embolectomy and reconstructive vascular surgery led to a successful result. This case illustrates the diagnostic problems of a thrombosed popliteal artery aneurysm and warns of embolic complications during PST

An evaluation survey on pulse polio immunization (PPI) was conducted in Union Territory of Chandigarh with a population of 88,100 children under the age of five years. Information was collected by interviewing the companions of 438 children in 18 polio centres, selected by stratified random sampling. Participation of children in the age-group of 4 and 5 years was found to be low. Awareness regarding various components of pulse polio immunization was found to be good in urban areas whereas it was unsatisfactory in slums. A coverage evaluation survey of the campaign for mass Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) on 9th December, 1995 and 20th January, 1996 in Delhi was carried out using the modified cluster sampling technique and a pre-structured proforma. Six-hundred-and-nine children of under-3 age group were covered in the survey. Overall coverage for both the doses was found to be 77%. BACKGROUND: Dermabrasion followed by skin grafting has been used for treatment of depigmentation. The short pulsed carbon dioxide (CO2) laser allows removal of the epidermis but leaves necrosis on the surface of the dermis.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine if the thermal necrosis would interfere with the take of skin grafts.
METHODS: Two vitiliginous areas of skin were de-epithelialized, one by conventional dermabrasion and the other with a pulsed CO2 laser. Each area was biopsied for histologic study and grafted with a split-thickness skin graft.

Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid pulse pressure was reported to be useful in the assessment of the cerebrospinal pressure-volume compensation. A 6-month protocol of oral pulse calcitriol was used in nine uraemic children (2-14 years old) on dialysis who presented with renal osteodystrophy. Calcitriol was administered twice a week, 4 micrograms per dose for patients over 30 kg and 3 micrograms for patients less than 30 kg. BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis is a disease of unknown etiology for which no specific treatment is effective. Pulse therapy with corticosteroids has been tried for various autoimmune disorders with minimal side effects. We undertook this study to determine the efficacy of dexamethasone pulse therapy in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS).
METHODS: Five women with PSS between the ages 30 and 60 years, received 100 mg dexamethasone in 500 mL of 5% dextrose by slow intravenous infusion over 3 hours for 3 consecutive days, once a month.

A patient with severe rheumatoid arthritis received d-penicillamine treatment for 16 months. She developed mild pruritus 6 months after d-penicillamine initiation, and severe pemphigus 10 months after d-penicillamine was changed to azathioprine. Subsequent methylprednisolone pulse therapy resulted in a transient clinical remission of pemphigus. A literature review of d-penicillamine induced pemphigus and high dose methylprednisolone pulse therapy is presented.

Two cases of pneumothorax occurring during thoracotomy under one-lung ventilation are reported. One case occurred before pneumonectomy was carried out. The decrease in Spo2 shown by pulse oximetry, together with the increase in airway pressures, rapidly led to the diagnosis of pneumothorax.
