Variations in genetics, biology, and phenotype of cutaneous disorders in skin of color. Part II: Differences in clinical presentation and disparities in cutaneous disorders in skin of color.

Skin of color (SOC) patients are projected to comprise the majority of the population by 2044, yet knowledge gaps in the clinical presentation and treatment of both common and uncommon dermatologic conditions in skin of color persist. Improved awareness of disparities that disproportionately impact SOC patients is necessary to address health inequity in the field of dermatology. The first part of this CME discussed structural, genetic, and immunophenotypic differences in SOC in common inflammatory disorders as well as cutaneous malignancies. The second part of this CME highlights clinical diff

Racial disparities in skin tone representation of dermatomyositis rashes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This systemic review assesses skin tone representation in images of DM rashes in medical education literature. METHODS: A review was performed of 59 dermatology, 11 neurology, 10 neuromuscular, 7 rheumatology and 6 internal medicine textbooks published between 2011 and 2021 and 3 online image databases (UpToDate, VisualDx and DermNet NZ) that were available through an online medical school library. After extracting images, images with poor lighting or unclear rashes were removed. Authors graded skin tone independently on the Massey and Martin Skin Colour Scale (MMSCS) from 1 (very

Social determinants of COVID-19 incidence and outcomes: A rapid review.

Early reports indicate that the social determinants of health are implicated in COVID-19 incidence and outcomes. To inform the ongoing response to the pandemic, we conducted a rapid review of peer-reviewed studies to examine the social determinants of COVID-19. We searched Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from December 1, 2019 to April 27, 2020. We also searched the bibliographies of included studies, COVID-19 evidence repositories and living evidence maps, and consulted with expert colleagues internationally. We included studies identif

Dietary Intake and Anthropometric Measurement at Age 36 Months Among Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Children in Australia: A Secondary Analysis of the Baby Teeth Talk Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Interventions to reduce early childhood caries should be examined for their effects on anthropometry given their design to improve children's diets. OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcomes of dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, and blood pressure measurements between children at age 36 months in the immediate intervention group vs those in the delayed intervention group. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This secondary analysis was a follow-up to the 2-group Baby Teeth Talk randomized clinical trial conducted across the state of South Australia, Australia. Participants were

Advocating for an Incarcerated Informed Lens in Therapy.

Exceptionally high rates of incarceration in the United States have caused a need for a major social justice movement. This paper explains the various collateral damages endured by the incarcerated population. Several research studies related to the unintended consequences of incarceration on outcomes related to couple and family relationships, racial disparities, employment, poverty and public health are examined. The importance of individual, couple, and family therapy and its effectiveness toward improving the lives of those negatively impacted by incarceration is discussed.

Pediatric Heart Network Echocardiographic Z Scores: Comparison with Other Published Models.

BACKGROUND: Different methods have resulted in variable Z scores for echocardiographic measurements. Using the measurements from 3,215 healthy North American children in the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN) echocardiographic Z score database, the authors compared the PHN model with previously published Z score models. METHODS: Z scores were derived for cardiovascular measurements using four models (PHN, Boston, Italy, and Detroit). Model comparisons were performed by evaluating (1) overlaid graphs of measurement versus body surface area with curves at Z = -2, 0, and +2; (2) scatterplots of PHN v

Pain Perception and Treatment for Adolescents in Racially Concordant Versus Discordant Patient-Provider Scenarios.

PURPOSE: We tested assessments of adolescent pain and treatment recommendations in vignette cases that reflected racial concordance or discordance. METHODS: Participants, black and white medical professionals, evaluated two vignettes, an acute asthma exacerbation and a leg injury. Vignettes presented either black or white patients. Participants estimated patients' pain level and indicated their agreement with two treatment recommendations-an optimal and an adequate treatment. RESULTS: We expected stronger racial bias in pain estimates for white participants, although results did not support

Examining Cesarean Delivery Rates by Race: a Population-Based Analysis Using the Robson Ten-Group Classification System.

The Robson Ten-Group Classification System is widely considered to be the gold standard for comparing cesarean section (CS) delivery rates, despite limited adoption in the United States (US). When reporting overall CS rates, Blacks and other minorities are typically reported to have high CS rates but comparing overall CS rates may be misleading as CS may be more common in some higher risk populations. Improved understanding of how CS rates differ by race among standardized groups could highlight differences in care and areas for improvement. The current study examines racial differences in ces

Sun sensitivity in 5 US ethnoracial groups.

Some sun safety activities have included only non-Hispanic white individuals, even though individuals in other ethnoracial groups may be at risk for skin cancer. The objectives of this study were to investigate distributions of self-reported Fitzpatrick skin type within 5 ethnoracial groups and substantiate each group's self-report with an objective measure. The study used a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted at 70 postal stations in Southern California. Participants were US Postal Service letter carriers and included 115 Pacific Islanders, 222 black individuals, 329 Asians, 51…

"Race", ethnicity and haemoglobin disorders.

The new genetics has brought forth concerns that such developments as screening for genetic diseases will accentuate the oppression of minority ethnic groups [Bradby (1996) Genetics and racism. In The Troubled Helix: social and psychological aspects of the new human genetics, ed. T. Marteau and M. Richards, pp. 295-316. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge]. Haemoglobin disorders primarily affect minority ethnic groups in the U.K. but have been the subject of protest regarding lack of services as much as the unwelcome advent of them. This paper examines various conceptions of "race", from bio

Ethnic differences in cancer frequency.

Ethnic and racial differences in cancer incidence, mortality and survival are well documented for many tumor sites. For skin cancer and probably for some other sites such differences have their foundation in biological characteristics that presumably reflect genetically determined differences. In other cases, apparent racial differences in fact reflect and must be distinguished from, associated co--variables including socio--economic and cultural factors.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: clinical and family study of 50 cases.

Fifty patients with Tourette syndrome were evaluated; data included family history, clinical characteristics, response to haloperidol, and side effects during haloperidol therapy. Sixteen patients had a family history of Tourette syndrome, and another 16 had a family history of tics. Twenty-four families had more than 2 members with Tourette syndrome or tics. There was no preponderance of families with a Jewish, Eastern European background in this sample. Thirty-four patients had obsessive-compulsive behavior. Among the 50 patients there was a high frequency of sleep disturbance, learning disa

Visual Difficulty, Race and Ethnicity, and Activity Limitation Trajectories Among Older Adults in the United States: Findings From the National Health and Aging Trends Study.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the influence of visual difficulty on activity limitation trajectories in older U.S. adults and investigate whether this varied across racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: We used data from 8,077 participants in the nationally representative National Health and Aging Trends Study from 2011 to 2019. Using mixed-effects regression models, we investigated the association of self-reported visual difficulty and race/ethnicity with activity limitation trajectories. RESULTS: Higher levels of visual difficulty and belonging to a minority racial/ethnic group were associated with
