The role of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation on female fertility: A review.

With increasing technological developments, exposure to non-ionizing radiations has become unavoidable as people cannot escape from electromagnetic field sources, such as Wi-Fi, electric wires, microwave oven, radio, telecommunication, bluetooth devices, etc. These radiations can be associated with increased health problems of the users. This review aims to determine the effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations on female fertility. To date, several in vitro and in vivo studies unveiled that exposure to non-ionizing radiations brings about harmful effects on oocytes, ovarian follicles

Ferroptosis plays an important role in promoting ionizing radiation-induced intestinal injuries.

The intestinal tract is an essential component of the body's immune system, and is extremely sensitive to exposure of ionizing radiation. While ionizing radiation can effectively induce multiple forms of cell death, whether it can also promote ferroptosis in intestinal cells and the possible interrelationship between ferroptosis and intestinal immune function has not been reported so far. Here, we found that radiation-induced major ultrastructural changes in mitochondria of small intestinal epithelial cells and the changes induced in iron content and MDA levels in the small intestine were cons

Lack of transgenerational effects of ionizing radiation exposure from the Chernobyl accident.

Effects of radiation exposure from the Chernobyl nuclear accident remain a topic of interest. We investigated germline de novo mutations (DNMs) in children born to parents employed as cleanup workers or exposed to occupational and environmental ionizing radiation after the accident. Whole-genome sequencing of 130 children (born 1987-2002) and their parents did not reveal an increase in the rates, distributions, or types of DNMs relative to the results of previous studies. We find no elevation in total DNMs, regardless of cumulative preconception gonadal paternal [mean = 365 milligrays (mGy), r

MicroRNA-26 regulates the expression of CTGF after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF) is a serious complication that occurs after irradiation and which is caused by the deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins such as collagen. However, the underlying mechanisms, including the expression of the cytokines, that promote the RIF process, are not yet fully understood. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have recently been suggested to act as post-transcriptional repressors for many genes; however, their role in the process of RIF remains to be elucidated. Our previous study showed that ionizing radiation increased the type I collagen expression through the

Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation Therapy: A Novel Treatment for Post-Concussion Syndrome?

A subset of victims who experience concussion suffer from persistent symptoms spanning months to years post-injury, termed post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Problematically, there is lack of consensus for the treatment of PCS. Concussion injury involves a neurometabolic cascade leading to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation which parallels the oxidative stress loading occuring from age-related neurodegenerative conditions. Historical and recent evidence has emerged showing the efficacy of low-dose radiation therapy for many human diseases including neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzhiemer

Pathological changes in the central nervous system following exposure to ionizing radiation.

Experimental studies in animals provide relevant knowledge about pathogenesis of radiation-induced injury to the central nervous system. Radiation-induced injury can alter neuronal, glial cell population, brain vasculature and may lead to molecular, cellular and functional consequences. Regarding to its fundamental role in the formation of new memories, spatial navigation and adult neurogenesis, the majority of studies have focused on the hippocampus. Most recent findings in cranial radiotherapy revealed that hippocampal avoidance prevents radiation-induced cognitive impairment of patients wit

Dataset for dose and time-dependent transcriptional response to ionizing radiation exposure.

Exposure to ionizing radiation associated with highly energetic and charged heavy particles is an inherent risk astronauts face in long duration space missions. We have previously considered the transcriptional effects that three levels of radiation (0.3 Gy, 1.5 Gy, and 3.0 Gy) have at an immediate time point (1 hr) post-exposure [1]. Our analysis of these results suggest effects on transcript levels that could be modulated at lower radiation doses [2]. In addition, a time dependent effect is likely to be present. Therefore, in order to develop a lab-on-a-chip approach for detection of radiati

Regulating Ionizing Radiation Based on Metrics for Evaluation of Regulatory Science Claims.

This article attempts to reconcile differences within the relevant scientific community on the effect of exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation notably the applicability of linear nonthreshold (LNT) process at exposures below a certain limit. This article applies an updated version of Metrics for Evaluation of Regulatory Science Claims (MERSC) derived form Best Available Regulatory Science (BARS) to the arguments provided by the proponents and opponents of LNT. Based on BARS/MERSC, 3 categories of effects of exposure to ionizing radiation are identified. One category (designated as S) co

Interference with DNA repair after ionizing radiation by a pyrrole-imidazole polyamide.

Pyrrole-imidazole (Py-Im) polyamides are synthetic non-genotoxic minor groove-binding small molecules. We hypothesized that Py-Im polyamides can modulate the cellular response to ionizing radiation. Pre-treatment of cells with a Py-Im polyamide prior to exposure to ionizing radiation resulted in a delay in resolution of phosphorylated γ-H2AX foci, increase in XRCC1 foci, and reduced cellular replication potential. RNA-sequencing of cell lines exposed to the polyamide showed induction of genes related to the ultraviolet radiation response. We observed that the polyamide is almost 10-fold more t

Twenty years of FISH-based translocation analysis for retrospective ionizing radiation biodosimetry.

PURPOSE: The fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technique, which easily detects reciprocal translocations, is currently used to estimate doses in retrospective biological dosimetry, after suspected accidental overexposure to ionizing radiation (IR). This study of 42 cases aimed to verify the appropriateness of this assay for radiation dose reconstruction, compared to the dicentric assay, and to evaluate other limitations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We labeled chromosomes 2, 4, and 12 by 3-color FISH painting to detect translocations on lymphocytes of patients with suspected past IR overexpos

Ferulic acid (FA) abrogates ionizing radiation-induced oxidative damage in murine spleen.

PURPOSE: The spleen is a crucial organ manifesting immune functions. Thus, radiation-induced oxidative challenge is vulnerable for the spleen. Our major objective was to protect the spleen from radiation-induced anomalous situations and to identify the signaling pathways involved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Swiss albino mice were treated with ferulic acid (FA) once in a day at a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight for 5 consecutive days before exposing them to single dose of 10 Gy irradiation. The ROS generation and MMP change were determined by flow cytometry. The expression of different signaling prot

The Influence of Ionizing Radiation on Exosome Composition, Secretion and Intercellular Communication.

A large variety of vesicles is actively secreted into the extracellular space by most type of cells. The smallest nanoparticles (30-120 nm), called exosomes, are known to transport their cargo (nucleic acids, proteins and lipids) between diverse locations in the body. Specific content of exosomes and their influence on recipient cells depends primarily on the type of the secretory (donor) cell, yet several studies highlight the importance of environmental stress on which the donor cells are exposed. Ionizing radiation, which induces damage to DNA and other structures of a target cell, is one o

Polaprezinc protects normal intestinal epithelium against exposure to ionizing radiation in mice.

Polaprezinc (PZ), an antiulcer drug, has been reported to have antioxidant effects. The purpose of the present study was to assess the radioprotective effects of PZ in the normal intestine of C57BL/6J mice. PZ was orally administered at 100 mg/kg body weight in the drinking water. Firstly, the present study compared the survival of normal intestinal crypt epithelial cells with mice that received PZ prior to or following irradiation. Next, the present study examined the sequential changes of the incidence of apoptosis in the normal intestine of mice that received irradiation. The mice that rece

Human serum miR-34a as an indicator of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Radiation exposure in industrial accidents or nuclear device attacks is a major public health concern. There is an urgent need for markers that rapidly identify people exposed to ionizing radiation (IR). Finding a blood-based marker is advantageous because of the ease of sample collection. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that serum miR-34a could serve as an indicator of exposure to IR. Therefore, 44 women with breast cancer, where radiotherapy was part of their therapeutic protocol, were investigated in this study. After demonstrating the appropriateness of our microRNA (miRNA)

Childhood exposure to ionizing radiation from computed tomography imaging in Nova Scotia.

BACKGROUND: Examining radiation dose in the paediatric population is particularly important due to the vulnerability of paediatric patients (increased radiosensitive tissues and postexposure life-years) and risk for future radiogenic malignancy. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate trends in paediatric computed tomography (CT) use and ionizing radiation exposure using population-based data from Nova Scotia. METHODS: A retrospective, population-based cohort study of CT use in patients <20 years of age, from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2011, was performed in Nova Scotia. CT examination data were retrie

Correction of aftereffects of ionizing radiation by exposure to low-intensity light.

Specific features of free radical oxidation were studied after experimental exposure to ionizing radiation. A decrease in the level of products of oxidative modification of proteins and LPO was observed after exposure of irradiated zone to low-intensity incoherent red light. It was suggested that low-intensity radiation of this spectrum produces a radioprotective effect and can be used for the correction of ionizing radiation-induced disturbances.

Treatment efficiency of combining photodynamic therapy and ionizing radiation for Bowen's disease.

BACKGROUND: Topical 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) is widely used for treating Bowen's disease (BD), but recurrence and tumour cell persistence after ALA-PDT is sometimes problematic. Radiation therapy (RT) is also effective for BD, but is limited by its side-effects, such as refractory ulcers. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to observe a synergic effect of combination therapy with ALA-PDT and RT for BD cases that did not respond effectively to prior ALA-PDT. METHODS: Subjects were BD patients whose lesion did not show complete remission or showed recurrence a

Detection of premature segregation of centromeres in persons exposed to ionizing radiation.

We have analyzed the frequency of premature centromeric division (PCD) in medical personnel professionally exposed to low doses of radiation. They had chromosome aberrations (CAs) involving dicentric chromosomes, ring chromosomes, acentric fragments, chromosome breaks, and chromatid breaks. The study included 30 exposed subjects and 23 controls who were each analyzed by a conventional cytogenetics procedure and subsequently by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The latter was applied particularly in order to verify PCD in a specific chromosome (chromosome 18) in both metaphases and inte

Mitochondrial mutant cells are hypersensitive to ionizing radiation, phleomycin and mitomycin C.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is an important contributor to the ATP-generating oxidative phosphorylation complex. Single nucleotide mutations in mitochondrial genes involved in ATP synthesis result in a broad range of diseases. Leber optic atrophy and Leigh's syndrome are two such diseases arising from point mutations in the mitochondrial genome. Here, ionizing radiation, phleomycin and mitomycin C (MMC) were used to induce structural chromosomal aberrations in Leber's and Leigh's cells to investigate how these mitochondrial mutations affect the cell's DNA repair processes. Because of the energy

Enhanced sensitivity of the RET proto-oncogene to ionizing radiation in vitro.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is a well-known risk factor for a number of human cancers, including leukemia and thyroid cancer. It has been known for a long time that exposure of cells to radiation results in extensive DNA damage; however, a small number of studies have tried to explain the mechanisms of radiation-induced carcinogenesis. The high prevalence of RET/PTC rearrangements in patients who have received external radiation, and the evidence of in vitro induction of RET rearrangements in human cells, suggest an enhanced sensitivity of the RET genomic region to damage by ionizing radiat
