BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of adjuvant irradiation for head and neck cancer, the extent of damage to the underlying bone is not fully understood but is associated with pathologic fractures, nonunion, and osteoradionecrosis. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of esculentoside A (EsA) on radiation-induced cutaneous and fibrovascular toxicity and its possible molecular mechanisms, both in vivo and in vitro.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Mice received drug intervention 18 hours before 30 Gy to the right hind leg. Alterations in several cytokines expressed in skin tissue 2 days after irradiation were determined by ELISA. Early skin toxicity was evaluated 3 to 4 weeks after irradiation by skin scoring, and both tissue contraction and expression of TGF-beta1 were determined for soft-tissue fibrosis 3 months after irradiation.

There is no systematic study available from our country regarding pulmonary function tests in patients of breast cancer who receive postoperative radiotherapy. Therefore, we planned a prospective study to find out the effect of radiation on pulmonary functions in patients with breast cancer; who had undergone surgery in the form of simple mastectomy and axillary clearance. Transient radiological changes were seen in two cases and one patient had fibrosis at 9 months.

54 teeth from 20 patients irradiated for treatment of malignant tumors of the head and neck region were examined clinically, histologically and microradiographically. 18 teeth from 8 patients were used as controls. A significantly higher degree of hyposialia, radiation mucositis and atypical caries was found in the original group as compared to the control material. Occurrence of narrow gaps between dentin and cementum was also higher in the former group as compared with the latter.

BACKGROUND: Often the rectum is the dose-limiting organ in curative radiation therapy of pelvic malignancies. It reacts with serous, mucoid, or more rarely bloody diarrhea.
