Our studies on histamine release from normal washed leucocytes sensitised with sera of children allergic to various inhaled and ingested allergens show that besides IgE, IgG4 present in these sera was capable of sensitising leucocytes of normal donors, and these leucocytes released histamine on challenge with anti-IgG4. By contrast, antisera of other subclasses of IgG released very small amounts of histamine from sensitised leucocytes. Congenital syphilis may lead to severe sequelae in affected infants. The prevalence of syphilis in women of childbearing age has increased worldwide. From 2015 to 2018, we encountered eight pregnant women with syphilis including six with late latent and two with early latent syphilis. Seven pregnant women with syphilis received antibiotic therapies of oral amoxicillin, intravenous penicillin G, or the both. We carried out a serological and clinical survey to determine the prevalence and clinical presentation of yaws on two twin islands in Polynesia: Wallis and Futuna. A total of 264 serum samples were tested for specific Treponema pallidum haemagglutinations assay and non-specific rapid plasma reagin: 52 were positive for one or both tests; only one young adult had skin lesion consistent with yaws; and there were no observed cases of secondary or tertiary yaws. In 1976 and 1977, 28 state laboratories participated in a blinded proficiency testing study of syphilis serologic tests. Recent developments in syphilis serology are set down. The new specific tests for treponema pallidum are described. Reactivity in different stages of the disease including congenital and neurosyphilis is discussed. An outline is given of the possibilities of the IgM-FTA-ABS and 19 S IgM-FTA-ABS tests. Syphilis serology today requires only 3 tests: a screening procedure, where the specific AMHA-TP is the method of choice, FTA-ABS test should be used for confirmation, and the quantitative VDRL in order to follow up the effectiveness of treatment.

Two hundred women who were screened for syphilis at their initial antenatal visit were rescreened at the time of delivery. Umbilical cord blood specimens as well as maternal sera were tested.
