UNLABELLED: The Central African Republic (CAR) is a high-risk country for poliomyelitis outbreaks because of difficulties in closing immunity gaps due to the lack of resources, logistics issues, and insecurity. The country experienced multiple poliomyelitis cases since 2019. A novel type 2 oral polio vaccine (nOPV2) engineered to lower the risk of reversion of the vaccine strain was deployed in the CAR in 2022-2023 to counter active serotype 2 poliovirus transmission. This study reports routine poliovirus surveillance conducted from November 2021 through October 2023 in the CAR. Polioviruses i

Viral interactions may occur whenever a host is infected simultaneously with two viruses. Persons at high risk for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) may provide a substrate for such interactions. These could include complementary immunosuppression, potentiation of infection by altered receptors or genetic complementation, phenotypic mixing, or genetic recombination. The possibility of such interactions should be considered in the pathogenesis of AIDS.

Genetic instability can be induced by unusual DNA structures and sequence repeats. We have previously demonstrated that a large palindrome in the mouse germ line derived from transgene integration is extremely unstable and undergoes stabilizing rearrangements at high frequency, often through deletions that produce asymmetry. We have now characterized other palindrome rearrangements that arise from complex homologous recombination events. The structure of the recombinants is consistent with homologous recombination occurring by a noncrossover gene conversion mechanism in which a break induced i

Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a major pathogen in the poultry industry, evolves rapidly via genetic mutations and recombination. While recombination between field and live vaccine strains is well-documented, its direct role in viral virulence remains unclear. In this study, four novel IBV field strains (SX/2407, SX/2408, SX/2409, SX/2410) were isolated from a single layer farm in Shanxi Province, China, and genetically characterized. Comprehensive genomic analysis revealed that SX/2409 is a natural recombinant, with SX/2408 (co-isolated) as the major parent and a 4/91-like vaccine l

Recombination can result in genetic instability, and thus constitutes an important factor in the carcinogenic conversion of mammalian cells. Here we describe the occurrence of UV-stimulated recombination called enhanced recombination (EREC), measured with the use of Herpes Simplex Viruses type 1 mutants. In normal diploid human cells, EREC is induced by UV-C, mitomycin C and ENU, but not by X-ray or MMS. The kinetics of induction of EREC is similar to that of other SOS-like responses such as enhanced reactivation (ER) and enhanced mutagenesis (EM). In contrast to the latter responses, EREC is

Two chromium(VI) compounds (potassium chromate and potassium dichromate) and one chromium(III) compound, chromium chloride, were evaluated for genotoxic effects in the wing spot test of Drosophila melanogaster following standard procedures. This assay detects both somatic recombination and mutational events. The genotoxic effects were determined from the appearance of wing spots in flies transheterozygous for the third chromosome recessive markers multiple wing hairs (mwh) and flare-3 (flr(3)), as well as in flies heterozygous formwh and the multiply inverted TM3 balancer chromosome. Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) can infect various epithelial mucosal cells, ultimately causing different symptoms in infected organ systems. With more than 110 types classified into seven species (A-G), HAdV-D species possess the highest number of viruses and are the fastest proliferating. The emergence of new adenovirus types and increased diversity are driven by homologous recombination (HR) between viral genes, primarily in structural elements such as the penton base, hexon and fiber proteins, and the E1 and E3 regions. A comprehensive analysis of the HAdV genome provides valuable insights into

The prevailing abundance of full-length HIV type 1 (HIV-1) genome sequences provides an opportunity to revisit the standard model of HIV-1 group M (HIV-1/M) diversity that clusters genomes into largely nonrecombinant subtypes, which is not consistent with recent evidence of deep recombinant histories for simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) and other HIV-1 groups. Here we develop an unsupervised nonparametric clustering approach, which does not rely on predefined nonrecombinant genomes, by adapting a community detection method developed for dynamic social network analysis. We show that this met

Lateral gene transfer (LGT) facilitates many processes in bacterial ecology and pathogenesis, especially regarding pathogen evolution and the spread of antibiotic resistance across species. The obligate intracellular chlamydiae, which cause a range of diseases in humans and animals, were historically thought to be highly deficient in this process. However, research over the past few decades has demonstrated that this was not the case. The first reports of homologous recombination in the Chlamydiaceae family were published in the early 1990s. Later, the advent of whole-genome sequencing uncover

This study analyzed human norovirus genogroup II (GII) strains detected in Gwangju, South Korea, between 2020 and 2024, focusing on genetic diversity and recombination at the ORF1-ORF2 junction involving the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp, ORF1) and the major capsid protein VP1 (ORF2). Using year-round surveillance-based clinical samples, the analysis revealed that recombination events near the ORF1-ORF2 junction were a major driver of genotype replacement over time. Multiple recombinant lineages, including GII.4[P16], GII.17[P31], GII.3[P25], and the emergent, rarely reported genotype GII

It has been suggested that an X-linked dominant allele operates in the genetic transmission of bipolar (manic-depressive) illness. Linkage studies with X-chromosome markers have remained inconclusive, showing both positive and negative results. Some of the ambiguity may be attributed to imprecise analytic methods and genetic heterogeneity. In this report, recently published pedigree series are reanalysed for linkage using a systematic method of pedigree analysis (Liped 3) with an accurate age-of-onset correction. Linkage heterogeneity is assessed through a two-recombination fraction heterogene

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is responsible for frequent large-scale outbreaks of hand, foot, and mouth disease worldwide and represent a major etiological agent of severe, sometimes fatal neurological disease. EV71 variants have been classified into three genogroups (GgA, GgB, and GgC), and the latter two are further subdivided into subgenogroups B1 to B5 and C1 to C5. To investigate the dual roles of recombination and evolution in the epidemiology and transmission of EV71 worldwide, we performed a large-scale genetic analysis of isolates (n = 308) collected from 19 countries worldwide over a 40-yea

Recombination is a mechanism whereby positive sense single stranded RNA viruses exchange segments of genetic information. Recent phylogenetic analyses of naturally occurring recombinant flaviviruses have raised concerns regarding the potential for the emergence of virulent recombinants either post-vaccination or following co-infection with two distinct wild-type viruses. To characterize the conditions and sequences that favor RNA arthropod-borne virus recombination we constructed yellow fever virus (YFV) 17D recombinant crosses containing complementary deletions in the envelope protein coding

Due to the lack of a proofreading function and error-repairing ability of genomic RNA, accumulated mutations are known to be a force driving viral evolution in the genus Flavivirus, including the Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus. Based on sequencing data, RNA recombination was recently postulated to be another factor associated with genomic variations in these viruses. We herein provide experimental evidence to demonstrate the occurrence of RNA recombination in the JE virus using two local pure clones (T1P1-S1 and CJN-S1) respectively derived from the local strains, T1P1 and CJN. Based on resu

Prominent genomic recombination has been observed between the Delta and Alpha variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), isolated from clinical specimens in Japan. Interestingly, the recombination variant detected in this study carries a spike protein identical to that in the domestic Delta variant, thereby suggesting that further risks would not be associated with infectivity and immune escape. The recombinant was classified as an XC lineage in the PANGOLIN database. It is necessary to intensively study such marked genetic variations and characterize emerging va

Rad-equivalences were established for four mono- and bifunctional furocoumarins, two of them of therapeutical interest. Using an eucaryotic cell system (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) rad-equivalences were determined for lethal effects, the induction of mutations and of intra- and intergenic recombination. For each furocoumarin the rad-equivalences for the genetic effects lay in the same range except those for the induction of intergenic recombination which gave higher values. Based on data obtained on mammalian cells in culture a rad-equivalence could be estimated for the phototoxic effect (cell k

Nonrecombining sex chromosomes, like the mammalian Y, often lose genes and accumulate transposable elements, a process termed degeneration. The correlation between suppressed recombination and degeneration is clear in animal XY systems, but the absence of recombination is confounded with other asymmetries between the X and Y. In contrast, UV sex chromosomes, like those found in bryophytes, experience symmetrical population genetic conditions. Here, we generate nearly gapless female and male chromosome-scale reference genomes of the moss Ceratodon purpureus to test for degeneration in the bryop

Noroviruses (NoVs) are a major causative agent of acute gastroenteritis in humans. They are members of the Caliciviridae family and based on the genetic analysis of the RdRp and capsid regions, human NoVs are divided into three genogroups (Gs), GI, GII, and GIV. The three genogroups further segregate into distinct lineages called genotypes. The NoV genus is genetically diverse and recombination of viral RNA is known to depend upon various immunological and intracellular constraints that may allow the emergence of viable recombinants. In this study, three Noroviral strains detected in clinical

The first evidence of genetic linkage and sex-specific recombination in the order Crocodylia is reported. This study was conducted using a resource pedigree of saltwater crocodiles consisting of 16 known-breeding pairs (32 adults) and 101 juveniles. A total of 21 microsatellite loci were available for analysis. Ten of the 21 loci showed linkage with 4 linkage groups: 3 pairwise (Cj131/Cj127, CUD68/Cj101, and Cj107/Cp10) and 1 four-locus (Cj122, CUD78, Cj16, and Cj104) being found. Linkage analysis on the 21 loci revealed evidence of sex-specific differences in recombination rates. All 5 nonzer
