Surgical Health Needs of Minor Refugees in Germany: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: There has been a substantial rise in refugees entering Germany over the past years, of which approximately one-third are underaged. Many end up in pediatric surgical care, and little is known about the health of these individuals. Our study was designed to assess the surgical-related health status of underage refugees based on a large sample cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After ethics board approval, we used a structured questionnaire to collect demographic information and surgical health-related elements in three large refugee accommodation centers. RESULTS: A total of 461 min…

Mental health symptoms in Iraqi refugees: posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression.

Refugees suffer from a higher rate of mental health symptoms than the general population since they have experienced extreme suffering and the accumulated effects of trauma. Because of the diversity of regions from which refugees originate, there is a need to understand some of the unique experiences that are specific to each sub-groups of immigrants. The purpose of the present study was to explore mental health symptoms in Iraqi refugee clients who immigrated to the United States after the Gulf War of the early 1990's. As part of a larger study, 116 adult Iraqi immigrants to the United States…

A unique panic-disorder presentation among Khmer refugees: the sore-neck syndrome.

This article describes a previously unreported cultural syndrome among Khmer refugees. This common presentation of distress centers on the complaint of a sore neck, the sufferer fearing that wind-and-blood pressure may burst the vessels in this area. During an acute episode, a Khmer endures many--if not all--of the following neck-and-head complaints: headache, blurry vision, a buzzing in the ear, and dizziness. While in the throes of the sore-neck attack, the patient frequently experiences palpitations as well as other symptoms of autonomic arousal, such as diaphoresis, shortness of breath, an…

Panic disorder among Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic. Prevalence and subtypes.

This study surveys Khmer refugees attending two psychiatric clinics to determine both the prevalence of panic disorder as well as panic attack subtypes in those suffering panic disorder. A culturally valid adaptation of the SCID-panic module, the Cambodian Panic Disorder Survey (CPDS), was administered to 89 consecutive Cambodian refugees attending these psychiatric clinics. Utilizing culturally sensitive panic probes, the CPDS provides information regarding both the presence of panic disorder and panic-attack subtypes during the month prior to interview. Of 89 patients surveyed at two psychia…

[Psychiatric disorders in refugees and asylum seekers: psychological trauma as a cause?].

Posttraumatic stress disorder was diagnosed in two patients, men aged 26 and 29, an asylum seeker from the Middle East and a refugee from former Yugoslavia respectively. They had experienced severe psychotraumatic events. They were referred to a clinic for traumatised refugees and asylum seekers. Their psychiatric disturbances did not fit posttraumatic stress disorder, however. The former suffered from a schizophrenic disorder, the latter from psychosis and depression based on alcohol dependence. Growing awareness of the high prevalence of traumatic experiences in the population leads to a con…

Pyrethroid-impregnated bed nets for personal protection against malaria for Afghan refugees.

A field trial of permethrin-impregnated bed nets (PIBs) was conducted in 2 Afghan refugee villages in Pakistan. Nets were issued to only 10% of families (= 1398 people); this simulated a situation in which bed nets are gradually adopted by villagers in Afghanistan. A further 10% lacking bed nets were selected as controls from the same villages. An initial survey showed that 86% of household heads were aware that malaria was transmitted by mosquito bites, but only 2% had used bed nets before. Trial families were encouraged to attend the village health centres if they fell ill. Microscopy record

Impact of recounting trauma stories on the emotional state of Cambodian refugees.

Twenty Cambodian refugees with premigration histories of trauma received an average of 16 sessions of individual therapy from a Cambodian bicultural counselor at a trauma treatment center in Sydney, Australia. Nineteen of the 20 patients reported that during treatment they had been willing to talk about their trauma histories, a finding that raises doubts about the commonly held belief that Asians are not psychologically minded and avoid disclosing emotionally sensitive information to health care workers. However, self-disclosing therapy alone did not appear to benefit these patients. Only fou…

[Psychosocial preventive work among war refugees. A task for primary health care?].

During the two first years of the war in Bosnia (1992-93) refugees came both to Norway and to other European countries. Bosnian "war refugees" are released prisoners from Serbian concentration camps, and their close families. Most of the former prisoners and their families had experienced extreme traumas, qualifying them for help from expert psychotherapists. No such help was available. The aim of the present project was to find out whether useful psychosocial preventive work can be done within the primary health services. Our intervention, which was carried out during a six month period in 19…

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis: a mixed virus outbreak among Vietnamese refugees on Guam.

In May 1975 the authors investigated an outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis that affected an estimated 29,000 refugees from South Vietnam who stayed on Guam while en route to the United States. Illness usually lasted6-10 days and was characterized by conjunctival injection (100%), lid edema (84%), eye irritation (81%) and subconjunctival hemorrhages (45%). Conjunctival swabs and paired serum specimens on a limited number of patients implicated enterovirus 70 as a major etiologic agent and adenovirus 11 as a less frequent agent. Adenovirus 8 and herpes simplex virus caused concurrent, …

Post-traumatic stress disorder and its associated factors: a cross-sectional study among refugee children and adolescents living in a Ugandan refugee settlement.

Objective: The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its risk factors among adult refugees in the context of war-related forced migration is well established. However, reliable data are lacking on war-related trauma among refugee children and adolescents residing in refugee settlements. This study estimated the magnitude of PTSD and its associated factors among children and adolescents in Nakivale refugee settlement, south-western Uganda.Method: We conducted a cross-sectional quantitative study among 325 adolescent (10-19-year-old) refugees, who were selected using a simple r…

Feasibility of a randomised trial of Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) with refugee youth: results from a pilot of the Swedish UnaccomPanied yOuth Refugee Trial (SUPpORT).

BACKGROUND: Although post-traumatic stress is prevalent among unaccompanied refugee minors (URM), there are few evidence-based psychological interventions for this group. Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) is a brief, manualised intervention for trauma-exposed youth, which has shown promising results in exploratory studies. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the use of TRT among URM by investigating key uncertainties relating to recruitment, randomisation, intervention delivery and data collection. METHODS: A

Prevalence of trachoma within refugee camps serving South Sudanese refugees in White Nile State, Sudan: Results from population-based surveys.

BACKGROUND: The world is witnessing mass displacement of populations which could impact global efforts to eliminate neglected tropical disea … n reducing the prevalence of trachoma within the country; however, the presence of over one million refugees from a neighboring trachoma hyper-endemic country could impact this progress. These surveys were the first step in addressing this important issue. The results demonstrate that at least three years of mass drug administration with azithromycin and t …

The Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases and Refugee Health Network of Australia recommendations for health assessment for people from refugee-like backgrounds: an abridged outline.

In 2009, the Australasian Society of Infectious Diseases published guidelines on the post-arrival health assessment of recently arrived refugees. Since then, the number of refugees and asylum seekers reaching Australia has increased substantially (17 555 refugees in 2015-16) and the countries of origin have changed. These groups are likely to have had poor access to health care pre-arrival and, consequently, are at risk of a range of chronic and infectious diseases. We established an advisory group that included infectious diseases physicians, general practitioners, public health specialists, …

Vietnamese boat refugees: the influence of war and flight traumatization on mental health on arrival in the country of resettlement. A community cohort study of Vietnamese refugees in Norway.

A consecutive cohort of 145 adult Vietnamese refugees were personally interviewed and completed the Symptom Checklist 90 R self-rating scale on arrival in Norway. Sixty-two percent had witnessed bombing, fires and shooting, 48% had witnessed other people being wounded or killed and 36% had been involved in life-threatening situations or had been wounded in the war. Nearly all war trauma variables but none of the escape or refugee camp variables were significantly related to mental health 7 years after the end of the war. War trauma was significantly associated with mental health, also when age…
