Evaluating the efficacy of moving cupping for chronic low back pain using shear wave elastography: A parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Moving cupping has gained popularity as a complementary therapy for managing CLBP owing to its noninvasive and cost-effective nature. However, the lack of objective measures to assess its therapeutic effect has been a considerable challenge in evaluating the effectiveness of moving cupping for CLBP management. METHODS: We developed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) protocol for evaluating the effectiveness of a noninvasive treatment using moving cupping by assessing muscle relaxation wi

Chronic constipation. Manometric patterns and surgical considerations.

We studied 80 children who had severe chronic constipation that was refractory to dietary, medicinal, and psychiatric therapy by means of barium enemas, rectal biopsies, and manometry. Four patients had Hirschsprung's disease and three patients had segmental dilatation of the colon. The remaining 73 patients had radiologically dilated anorectums with inpaction. Only 49 patients underwent rectal wall biopsies. All of the specimens were positive for ganglion cells. Manometric study of the 73 patients showed 18 patients who had elevated internal sphincter pressures with good relaxation following

Combination therapy with pemafibrate (K-877) and pitavastatin improves vascular endothelial dysfunction in dahl/salt-sensitive rats fed a high-salt and high-fat diet.

BACKGROUND: Statins suppress the progression of atherosclerosis by reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. Pemafibrate (K-877), a novel selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α modulator, is expected to reduce residual risk factors including high triglycerides (TGs) and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol during statin treatment. However, it is not known if statin therapy with add-on pemafibrate improves the progression of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of combination therapy with pitavastatin and pemafibrate on lipid

Safety application of muscle relaxants and the traditional low-frequency ventilation during the flexible or rigid bronchoscopy in patients with central airway obstruction: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchoscopy treatments of central airway obstruction (CAO) under general anesthesia are high-risky procedures, and posing a giant challenge to the anesthesiologists. We summarized and analyzed our clinical experience in patients with CAO undergoing flexible or rigid bronchoscopy, to estimate the safety of skeletal muscle relaxants application and the traditional Low-frequency ventilation. METHODS: Clinical data of 375 patients with CAO who underwent urgent endoscopic treatments in general anesthesia from January 2016 to October 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. The use ratio of

Treatment of female urethral syndrome refractory to antibiotics.

Various methods of treatment, other than antibiotic therapy, have been proposed for the treatment of female urethral syndrome; however, the results of these treatment methods are disappointing, due perhaps to the use of the wrong treatment approach. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of external sphincter relaxant and biofeedback (BFB) with electrical stimulation therapy (EST) in patients who do not respond well to antibiotics. One hundred and five patients with a diagnosis of female urethral syndrome were entered into this study. Antibiotics were given as a first-line the

A systematic review of cognitive-behavioral treatment for nightmares: toward a well-established treatment.

The aim of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on nightmare frequency and to determine which kind of CBT is the most effective treatment. A systematic literature search was carried out in PsychInfo and PubMed articles published on or before May 1, 2008. The inclusion criteria were: nightmare treatment study, use of nonpharmacological treatment, not a qualitative case study, randomized-controlled trial (RCT). After selection, 12 peer-reviewed studies about 9 RCTs remained (2 follow-up studies and one displaying preliminary results). Several interve

A comparison of relaxation training and competing response training to eliminate hair pulling and nail biting.

A 17-year-old female with a 14-year history of hair pulling and nail biting was treated with relaxation training and competing response training. While introduction of relaxation training produced an initial decline in hair pulling, there was a gradual recovery of the maladaptive behavior to baseline levels. The competing response procedure consisted of clenching fists for 3 min whenever hair pulling or nail biting occurred or were likely to occur. By the use of the competing response hair pulling and nail biting decreased, eventually to zero. Follow-up over a 2-year period revealed that the t

Italian experience of electromyographic-biofeedback treatment of episodic common migraine: preliminary results.

Electromyographic biofeedback is commonly used successfully to treat tension-type headache, while thermal biofeedback is considered the best behavioral therapy for migraine. Ten female patients with episodic common migraine (age 20-35 years, age of disease onset 16.2 +/- 5.1 years, illness duration 13.6 +/- 10.7 years) were treated by 16 twice-weekly electromyographic biofeedback and relaxation training sessions with breathing exercises. Follow-up sessions were held 1,3,6 and 12 months after the end of treatment. A significant decrease in migraine episodes was noted after therapy. More importa

Behavioral airsickness management program for student pilots.

The management of recurrent airsickness in student pilots has traditionally involved positive reinforcement of motivation and limited use of medication. The Behavioral Airsickness Management (BAM) program seeks to establish an effective behavioral and cognitive intervention format for managing airsickness symptoms. There were 37 student pilots experiencing recurrent airsickness who were exposed to an assessment and rehabilitation program designed to develop diaphragmatic breathing skills while rapidly reducing physiological tension via cue-evoked relaxation strategies. Cognitive modification t

Anxiety management training and anger control for type A individuals.

The present study sought to explore whether training Type A coronary-prone individuals in stress management would result in a diminution of Type A behaviors. The effectiveness of a single-method approach that focused specifically on anger management was tested. Results showed that the treatment, a modified version of Suinn's Anxiety Management Training, was associated with significant reductions in Type A inventory (Jenkins Activity Survey) scores. Two possible explanations for the results were entertained. First, Type A subjects may have experienced a sense of increased control over potential

Behavioral methods in the treatment of hypertension. A review of their clinical status.

Behavioral methods to lower blood pressure include biofeedback, relaxation, psychotherapy, suggestion and placebo, and environmental modification. Reported data for each method have been examined applying the clinical pharmacologic format used to study other therapeutic agents. Most studies have been Phase I type, small numbers of subjects in acute (short-term) treatment situations. Phase II studies, controlled trials with comparison with known effective agents, are sparse, and Phase III studies are not yet appropriate. These Phase I studies indicate blood pressure effects that are small, with

Medical Nature-Based Rehabilitation Program for Individuals with Exhaustion Syndrome: Changes in Quality of Life, Exhaustion Symptoms and Overall Health.

Stress-related health problems have increased sharply over the last two decades and have become a serious issue at all levels of society. In the Jönköping Region in southern Sweden, a nature-based rehabilitation (NBR) program for adults with Exhaustion Syndrome has been developed and then implemented into the Swedish National Healthcare System. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of this NBR-program. This was achieved by examining patients' quality of life, exhaustion symptoms and overall health using self-assessment instruments, comparing the results before partici

[PSYCHO-MEDICAL ASPECTS OF PRIMARY HEADACHES].

BACKGROUND: Primary headaches such as migraine and tension type headaches are extremely common and present a significant clinical challenge. These conditions involve a complex interaction between biological and psychological processes. As part of a "vicious cycle" effect, primary headaches can be deleterious to patients, causing stress, anxiety and catastrophization, while at the same time becoming exacerbated by those very same cognitive and emotional states. OBJECTIVES: Medications often have a limited effect in treating chronic primary headache. Additionally, there are a number of sub-popu

Holistic interventions protocol for interstitial cystitis symptom control: a case study.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a disabling bladder disorder that leads patients on an endless journey in search of treatment options to control their painful symptoms. Although there are some medical treatments available, no one treatment is completely effective. The Neuman model provides the rationale for the use of holistic prevention interventions with IC patients. Holistic interventions can help IC patients to retain, attain, and maintain system stability. A case study of 1 IC patient, who successfully used holistic approaches to achieve system stability, is described.

Myofascial pain--an overview.

Skeletal muscle is the largest organ in the human body. Any of these muscles may develop pain and dysfunction. In modern society, myofascial pain is a major cause of morbidity. It may present as regional musculoskeletal pain, as neck or back pain mimicking radiculopathy. It may also present as shoulder pain with concomitant capsulitis, and hip or knee pain with concomitant osteoarthritis. The condition is treatable. However, it is often under-diagnosed and hence undertreated. Traditional medical training and management of musculoskeletal pain have focused much attention on bones, joints and ne

Parasomnias: clinical features and forensic implications.

Parasomnias are undesirable behavioral or experiential phenomena arising from the sleep period. Once felt to be a unitary phenomenon, it is now clear that a wide variety of sleep disorders are capable of resulting in complex behaviors arising during sleep. The most common are disorders of arousal and rapid eye movement sleep disorder. Less common conditions include nocturnal seizures and psychogenic dissociative states. Malingering and Munchausen syndrome by proxy, while they are not actually parasomnias, may masquerade as parasomnias. Careful clinical and sleep laboratory evaluation can usual
