Evaluation of a Filtering Facepiece Respirator and a Pleated Particulate Respirator in Filtering Ultrafine Particles and Submicron Particles in Welding and Asphalt Plant Work Environments.

Manufacturing sites, such as welding, casting, and asphalt production (fumes), generate vast numbers of ultrafine particles of <0.1 µm in size and submicron particles close to the ultrafine range (0.1-0.5 µm). Although cumulative masses of these particles are negligible in comparison to the larger particles, the health effects are more severe due to the higher penetration in the human lower respiratory tract, other body parts crossing the respiratory epithelial layers, and the larger surface area. This research investigates the effectiveness of two common commercially available N95 filtering f

Trimethylammonia-lyases of Shewanella oneidensis and their role in anaerobic respiration.

The facultatively anaerobic bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 contains two operons in its genome, so_3056-3058 and so_3299-3301, each comprising genes encoding a putative periplasmic flavocytochrome c and a putative periplasmic aromatic amino acid ammonia-lyase. To determine their role in anaerobic respiration, we produced the encoded ammonia-lyases SO_3057 and SO_3299 in Escherichia coli and determined their substrate specificities. SO_3057 was found to cleave the trimethylammonium group from ergothioneine to yield thiourocanic acid, whereas SO_3299 catalyzed a similar conversion of N(π)-m…

Mitochondria poor but capacity rich? The paradox of podocyte respiration.

Campbell et al. show that podocyte mitochondria, isolated using a cell-specific MITO-Tag approach, possess high intrinsic respiratory capacity despite their low abundance. The study demonstrates that conventional culture conditions suppress mitochondrial respiration and increase oxidative stress, suggesting that current experimental systems may underestimate mitochondrial function in podocytes. The authors provide evidence that mitochondrial respiratory capacity in podocytes declines in male mice with aging, indicating that mitochondria could play a role in age-associated glomerular injury.

Soil Moisture Thresholds for the Temperature Sensitivity of Ecosystem Respiration.

Ecosystem respiration (ER) is the largest source of biogenic CO2 to the atmosphere, and its temperature sensitivity (Q10) before reaching maximum values is crucial for understanding land-climate feedback. However, despite decades of studies showing that Q10 varies considerably across space, time, and biomes, the mechanisms underlying this variability remain unresolved. Here we demonstrate that global variation in Q10 can be reconciled within a unified hydrothermal framework. Using data from 142 eddy covariance sites around the world, we show that Q10 exhibits unimodal responses to soil moistur…

Environmental drivers of increased ecosystem respiration in a warming tundra.

Arctic and alpine tundra ecosystems are large reservoirs of organic carbon1,2. Climate warming may stimulate ecosystem respiration and release carbon into the atmosphere3,4. The magnitude and persistency of this stimulation and the environmental mechanisms that drive its variation remain uncertain5-7. This hampers the accuracy of global land carbon-climate feedback projections7,8. Here we synthesize 136 datasets from 56 open-top chamber in situ warming experiments located at 28 arctic and alpine tundra sites which have been running for less than 1 year up to 25 years. We show that a mean rise …

The effects of Typhoon Doksuri on soil respiration in a subtropical forest.

Typhoons would alter soil respiration by altering forest structure and tree growth. However, there is limi-ted information on how typhoon will alter soil respiration under global warming with increasing intensity and frequency of typhoons in the future. We examined the effects of Typhoon Doksuri and soil warming (+4 ℃ via cable warming) on soil respiration in a subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest in 2023 by measuring soil respiration and environmental factors using a high time-resolution automated monitoring system. The results showed that the Typhoon Doksuri did not affect soil respiration…

Stress increases sperm respiration and motility in mice and men.

Semen quality and fertility has declined over the last 50 years, corresponding to ever-increasing environmental stressors. However, the cell … l cell-secreted extracellular vesicles that when incubated with mouse sperm, increase mitochondrial respiration and sperm motility, adding to our prior work showing impacts on embryo development. Together, these studies identify a time-dependent, translational signaling pathway that communicates stress experience to sperm, ultimately affecting reproductive fu …

SUPPRESION OF MITOCHONDRIAL RESPIRATION IS A FEATURE OF CELLULAR GLUCOSE TOXICITY.

Glucose toxicity is central to the myriad complications of diabetes and is now believed to encompass neurodegenerative diseases and cancer as well as microvascular and macrovascular disease. Due to the widespread benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors, which affect glucose uptake in the kidney proximal tubular cell, a focus on cell metabolism in response to glucose has important implications for overall health. We previously found that a -Warburg-type effect underlies diabetic kidney disease and involves metabolic reprogramming. This is now supported by quantitative measurements of superoxide measuremen

AIBP Regulates Metabolism of Ketone and Lipids but Not Mitochondrial Respiration.

Accumulating evidence indicates that the APOA1 binding protein (AIBP)-a secreted protein-plays a profound role in lipid metabolism. Interestingly, AIBP also functions as an NAD(P)H-hydrate epimerase to catalyze the interconversion of NAD(P)H hydrate [NAD(P)HX] epimers and is renamed as NAXE. Thus, we call it NAXE hereafter. We investigated its role in NAD(P)H-involved metabolism in murine cardiomyocytes, focusing on the metabolism of hexose, lipids, and amino acids as well as mitochondrial redox function. Unbiased metabolite profiling of cardiac tissue shows that NAXE knockout markedly upregul

Hydrogen peroxide vapor decontamination of N95 respirators for reuse.

OBJECTIVE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to global shortages of N95 respirators. Reprocessing of used N95 respirators may provide a higher filtration crisis alternative, but whether effective sterilization can be achieved for a virus without impairing respirator function remains unknown. We evaluated the viricidal efficacy of Bioquell vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) on contaminated N95 respirators and tested the particulate particle penetration and inhalation and exhalation resistance of respirators after multiple cycles of VHP. METHODS: For this study, 3M 1870 N9

Sterilization of N95 respirators: The time for action is upon us!

Re-processing of primary protective equipment is the need of the hour with healthcare systems all over the world strained due to the shortage precipitated by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The common methods of re-sterilization do not hold well for filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) as they affect their structure and function. We propose the validation and eventual use of gamma irradiation, an already existing method of re-sterilization, to disinfect FFRs in bulk.

Evidence for decontamination of single-use filtering facepiece respirators.

Single-use filtering face respirators (FFRs) are critical pieces of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers treating patients with suspected upper respiratory tract pathogens. Experiences during pandemics in the 2000s, as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-2-CoV-2, have highlighted concerns over the pressures that sustained respiratory virus pandemics may have on supplies of FFRs globally. Decontamination of FFRs has been posited as one solution to support the re-use of FFRs with a growing body of literature over the last 10+ years beginning to examine both t

Using surgical wrapping material for the fabrication of respirator masks.

Given the current shortage of respirator masks and the resulting lack of personal protective equipment for use by clinical staff, we examined bottom-up solutions that would allow hospitals to fabricate respirator masks that: (i) meet requirements in terms of filtering capacities, (ii) are easy to produce rapidly and locally, and (iii) can be constructed using materials commonly available in hospitals worldwide. We found that Halyard H300 material used for wrapping of surgical instruments and routinely available in hospitals, met these criteria. Specifically, three layers of material achieved a

Impact of Heart Transplantation on Cheyne-Stokes Respiration in a Child.

Sleep disordered breathing is well described in adults with heart failure but not in pediatric population. We describe a 13-year-old Caucasian male with severe heart failure related to dilated cardiomyopathy who demonstrated polysomnographic features of Cheyne-Stokes respiration, which completely resolved following cardiac transplantation. Cheyne-Stokes respiration in children with advanced heart failure and its resolution after heart transplant can be observed similar to adults.

Respirator physiological effects under simulated work conditions.

This study compared the physiological impacts of two respirator types in simulated work conditions. Fifty-six subjects included normal volunteers and persons with mild respiratory impairments (chronic rhinitis, mild COPD, and mild asthma). Respiratory parameters and electrocardiogram were measured using respiratory inductive plethysmography while performing eight work tasks involving low to moderate exertion using two respirators: (1) a dual cartridge half face mask (HFM) respirator, and (2) the N95. Mixed model regression analyses evaluating the effect of task and respirator type showed that

Obesity and the lung: 3. Obesity, respiration and intensive care.

Obesity is a major problem from a public health perspective and a difficult practical matter for intensivists. The obesity pandemic has required treating clinicians to develop an appreciation of the substantial pathophysiological effects of obesity on the various organ systems. The important physiological concepts are illustrated by focusing on obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, abdominal compartment syndrome and ventilatory management of the obese patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

[External respiration functions in patients with laryngeal and tracheal stenoses].

External respiration function (ERF) was examined in 89 patients with stenoses of the larynx and/or trachea (50 males, 39 females, age 23-62 years). ERF was assessed by correlation between air flow and volume during forced expiration. ERF parameters before surgical treatment were not sufficiently informative as tracheostoma does not allow complete air impermeability in the system patient-apparatus-ventilation. Suturing of tracheal defect improves ERF noticeably and its results can be assessed objectively.

Breathing around the clock: an overview of the circadian pattern of respiration.

This article reviews human and animal studies about the circadian patterns of physiological variables involved with the respiratory function. Some measures reflecting the mechanical properties of the lungs, such as functional residual capacity, forced expiratory volumes and airway resistance, change periodically with the time of the day. Also resting pulmonary ventilation (V(E)), tidal volume, and breathing rate follow circadian patterns. In humans, these patterns occur independently of the daily changes in activity, whereas, to some extent, they are linked to changes in the state of arousal.
