[Pathophysiological mechanisms of autism in children].

Based on the analysis of literature, the authors describe the neuropathophysiological mechanism of the formation of synapses, synaptic trans … cortex (CC) from these thalamus nuclei, the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and the nuclei of the reticular formation. Information propagating into the somatosensory and associative regions of CC is not modified by mirror neurons (MN) when performing arbitrary actions, which prevents the formation of an adequate image in the neural networks of the associative corte …

Mapping the oculomotor system.

Over the last three decades and together with Bernard Cohen, Volker Henn, Ulrich Büttner, and Anja Horn, it has been possible to morphologically identify several functional cell groups in the oculomotor system: the medium-sized horizontal excitatory and inhibitory burst neurons (EBNs, IBNs) in the paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF), the more sparsely scattered vertical EBNs in the rostral interstitial nucleus of the MLF (RIMLF), and the typically elongated omnipause neurons (OPNs) in nucleus raphé interpositus--all essential for the generation of saccades. In contrast, the role of t…

Biochemical and autoradiographic measurements of brain serotonin synthesis rate in the freely moving rat: a reexamination of the alpha-methyl-L-tryptophan method.

Biochemical approaches were used in freely moving rats to determine, under steady-state conditions, the brain/arterial plasma partition coefficients of L-tryptophan and alpha-[3H]methyl-L-tryptophan, from which the lumped constant for the alpha-methyl-L-tryptophan method of estimating the rate of brain serotonin synthesis is calculated. The lumped constants were significantly different in the various structures examined: 0.149 +/- 0.003 in the raphe dorsalis, 0.103 +/- 0.002 in the raphe centralis, 0.087 +/- 0.003 in the reticular formation, and 0.62 +/- 0.08 in the pineal gland. From these da…

Ultrastructural changes of tracheal epithelial cells of chicks experimentally infected with Cryptosporidium sp.

The ultrastructural changes in the tracheal epithelial cells of chicks with experimental cryptosporidiosis were examined. There was deciliation and formation of compound cilia whereas the microvilli showed Y-shaped formation, atrophy or blunting, fusion and branching. The basal bodies and striated rootlets were irregular and sometimes wanting while there was an increase in centrioles beneath the cilia. Nuclear atypia was common whereas the nucleoli were hypertrophic with reticular nucleolonema. Double nucleoli were mostly reticular and rarely ring-shaped or of thin-shelled type. There was an i

Midpontine tegmentum infarction with "one-and-a-half syndrome" demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a small midpontine tegmentum infarction in a patient with Fisher's one-and-a-half syndrome. The lesion was extremely restricted to the unilateral paramedian area of the midpontine tegmentum involving both the paramedian pontine reticular formation and medial longitudinal fasciculus. The typical form of this syndrome, that is, a combination of lateral gaze palsy and unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, can be caused by a midpontine lesion.

The physiological experiments of Constantin von Economo on the central pathways of mastication and deglutition.

The first study of Constantin von Economo on the mammalian brain was published in 1902. Experiments were carried out in rabbits at the Physi … rical and a modern perspective, including the concept of a central pattern generator in the pontine reticular formation and its interaction with the nucleus solitarius. Today we understand that mastication is a voluntary action controlled by motor cortical areas, by motoneurons of the trigeminal, and by a neural pattern generator in the pons. On the other hand, deglu …

A review of otolith pathways to brainstem and cerebellum.

Our knowledge of otolith pathways is developing rapidly, but is still far from complete. Primary afferents from the sacculus and utricle ter … ly by multisynaptic pathways. The otolith signals are relayed from the vestibular nuclei, medullary reticular formation, inferior olive, and lateral reticular nucleus to sagittal zones in the caudal cerebellar vermis (nodulus and uvula), and influence the deep cerebellar nuclei. The graviceptive information could be channeled by the cerebellar efferents back to the v …

Besides, structural and/or functional alterations of the pre-Bötzinger complex were present in a high percentage of sudden deaths (47%), prevalent in late fetal deaths. The sources of supraspinal afferents to the spinal cord in a variety of limbed reptiles. I. Reticulospinal systems.

Horseradish peroxidase was injected into various levels of the spinal cord of turtles (Pseudemys and Chrysemys), lizards (Tupinambis, Iquana, Gekko, Sauromelus, and Gerrhonotus), and a crocodilian (Caiman). The results suggest that brainstem reticulospinal projections in limbed reptiles rival mammalian reticulospinal systems in complexity. The reptilian myelencephalic reticular formation can be divided into four distinct reticulospinal nuclei. Reticularis inferior pars dorsalis (RID) contains multipolar neurons which project bilaterally to the spinal cord. Reticularis inferior pars ventralis (…

Piedraia hortae: biofilm formation and its importance in the pathogenesis of Piedra nigra (black piedra).

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the ultrastructure of Piedraia hortae. OBJECTIVE: To examine a P. hortae colony with scanning electron microscopy and investigate possible contributions to its the pathogenesis of black piedra. RESULTS: On low magnifications, two distinct aspects of the colony are identified, a compact area and a filamentous area. Analysis of the filamentous area demonstrates hyphae adhered by a thin reticular substance. A recurring finding is the adhesion between the fungal filaments in parallel. On high magnifications, the microfibrillar substance adhering the hyphae to ea

[Vertical vergence pathways].

Two pathways for vertical vergence probably exist: the cortical one carrying a psycho-optical reflex, the other sub-cortical connected to the vestibular apparatus and more probably to the otolith system. The sub-cortical pathway is essentially a vestibulo-cerebellar oculomotor pathway; but in addition there certainly exist direct vestibulo-oculomotor connections and long tracts passing through the interstitial nucleus of Cajal and the reticular formation.

Bilateral horizontal gaze paralysis due to pontine hemorrhage. A case report.

In a case of bilateral horizontal gaze paralysis, vertical gaze was clinically intact but eye movement recordings demonstrated a transient reduction of vertical saccadic velocities. Horizontal caloric vestibulo-ocular responses were absent. CT scanning and NMR imaging showed a hematoma in the median pontine tegmentum. This case provides additional evidence that vertical and horizontal saccade genesis may be independent of caudal paramedian pontine reticular formation lesions.

Biologic changes due to long-wave ultraviolet irradiation on human skin: ultrastructural study.

Alteration of the skin induced by single and repeated long-wave ultraviolet (UVA) exposures was studied. Following a single exposure to relatively large doses of UVA, pronounced dermal damage was observed. In the papillary dermis, superficial dermal vessels showed widely open endothelial gaps and extravasation of blood cells. Marked changes of fibroblasts were also seen in the superficial dermis. In the reticular dermis, extravascular fibrin deposition was seen. After repeated exposures to UVA the formation of cross-banded filamentous aggregations ("Zebra bodies") was observed in the superfici

μ-Opioid Receptor Activation at the Dorsal Reticular Nucleus Shifts Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Controls to Hyperalgesia in Chronic Joint Pain in Male Rats.

BACKGROUND: The dorsal reticular nucleus is a pain facilitatory area involved in diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC) through opioidergic mechanisms that are poorly understood. The hypothesis was that signaling of μ-opioid receptors is altered in this area with prolonged chronic inflammatory pain and that this accounts for the loss of DNICs occurring in this condition. METHODS: Monoarthritis was induced in male Wistar rats (n = 5 to 9/group) by tibiotarsal injection of complete Freund's adjuvant. The immunolabeling of µ-opioid receptors and the phosphorylated forms of µ-opioid receptors

Progressive recruitment of contralesional cortico-reticulospinal pathways drives motor impairment post stroke.

KEY POINTS: Activation of the shoulder abductor muscles in the arm opposite a unilateral brain injury causes involuntary increases in elbow, wrist and finger flexion in the same arm, a phenomenon referred to as the flexion synergy. It has been proposed that flexion synergy expression is related to reduced output from ipsilesional motor cortex and corticospinal pathways. In this human subjects study, we provide evidence that the magnitude of flexion synergy expression is instead related to a progressive, task-dependent recruitment of contralesional cortex. We also provide evidence that recruitm
