A rare case of systemic lupus erythematosus presenting with concurrent myocarditis, central retinal vein occlusion, and deep vein thrombosis.

Although systemic lupus erythematosus may present with broad and variable symptoms, the rare and atypical combined presentation of central retinal vein occlusion, myocarditis, and deep vein thrombosis poses a diagnostic challenge and highlights the need for a comprehensive diagnostic approach. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment help mitigate disease morbidity and mortality, and emphasize the importance of heightened clinical suspicion in complex presentations.

Prognostic biomarkers in treatment-naïve central retinal vein occlusion with macular edema.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS STUDY: Reduced pulse pressure (PP) reflects impaired systemic perfusion and may exacerbate retinal ischemia in central retinal vein occlusion-induced macular edema (CRVO-ME) by compromising ocular blood flow autoregulation. This hemodynamic dysfunction is hypothesized to worsen clinical outcomes and neovascular risks. PURPOSES: To investigate the associations between potential prognostic biomarkers and clinical outcomes in treatment-naïve CRVO-ME and assess their predictive utilities. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study conducted from March 2019 to March 2024, we…

Sleep-disordered breathing is related to retinal vein occlusion: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) may be a potential risk factor of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). We conducted a meta-analysis to systematically explore the relationship between RVO and SDB. METHODS: Observational studies assessing the relationship between SDB and RVO were retrieved by searches of electronic databases including the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wan Fang databases from database inception to August 9, 2023. In consideration of intra-study heterogeneity, a random-effects model was adopted to …

Evaluation of a Force-Sensing Handheld Robot for Assisted Retinal Vein Cannulation.

Approximately 16.4 million people are affected by retinal vein occlusion (RVO) resulting from hypercoagulability, low blood flow or thrombosis in the central or the branched retinal veins. Most common current treatments for RVO aim to limit the damage. In recent years, an experimental procedure, retinal vein cannulation (RVC) has been studied in animal models as well as human eye models. RVC is a procedure for targeted delivery of a therapeutic agent into the occluded retinal vein for dissolving the thrombi. Although effective treatment has been demonstrated via RVC, performing this procedure …

Aflibercept: A Review in Macular Oedema Secondary to Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Aflibercept (Eylea®) is a fully human, recombinant fusion protein available in various countries worldwide, including those of the EU, as well as the USA, for intravitreal use in the treatment of macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) in adults. Aflibercept acts as a soluble decoy receptor, binding with high affinity to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and placental growth factor (PIGF), preventing these angiogenic factors from binding to and activating their cognate receptors. In a multinational, phase III study in this patient population, aflibercept was …

Bilateral Central Retinal Vein Occlusion as Presenting Feature of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a common pathology of the retinal vasculature. Patients with CRVO usually present with a drop in visual acuity. The condition bears no specific therapy; treatment is aimed at the management of potentially blinding complications, of which there are many. With majority of cases being unilateral, bilateral CRVO is usually associated with an underlying systemic illness such as a hyperviscosity syndrome. Here, we present a case of a patient, who presented with a bilateral drop in vision diagnosed as bilateral CRVO on ophthalmic evaluation. Systemic workup re…
