Health-related quality of life and its associated factors among Chinese seasonal retired migrants in Hainan.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal retired migrants are mainly retired or semiretired people who migrate to warmer areas during the winter and then return to their original homes in the following year. Despite its increasing popularity, the evidence concerning the health status of Chinese seasonal retired migrants is controversial. Although some studies have shown that seasonal retired migrants have better health status, other studies note that migrants are driven involuntarily by health concerns and that their mental health suffers during migration. The objective of this study was to provide quantified evi

Gendered environmental pathways to sports injury: insights from retired athletes in the UK high-performance context.

OBJECTIVE: Women remain at increased risk for some sports injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament rupture and concussion. This study applied a gendered environmental approach to identify modifiable features of women's sport environments that may contribute to the gendered patterning of sports injuries. Our objectives were to identify features of gendered environments that mattered in athletes' lived experiences and to trace pathways connecting these features to injury. METHODS: We employed a creative methodology combining semi-structured interviews with artefact-elicited storytelling and

A national profile of kinlessness at the end of life among older adults: Findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The majority of end-of-life (EOL) caregiving is provided by unpaid family members. An increasing number of older adults are kinless (without close family/partnerships) and may have insufficient caregiver support to remain at home at the EOL. We therefore determined what proportion of older adults are kinless at the EOL and assessed the association of kinlessness with EOL care. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of Health and Retirement Study decedents, 2002-2015. SETTING: US population-based sample. PARTICIPANTS: Decedents age 51+ who died within 1 year of interview (n = …

Advancing Research on Psychosocial Stress and Aging with the Health and Retirement Study: Looking Back to Launch the Field Forward.

OBJECTIVES: The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) was designed as an interdisciplinary study with a strong focus on health, retirement, and socioeconomic environment, to study their dynamic relationships over time in a sample of mid-life adults. The study includes validated self-report measures and individual items that capture the experiences of stressful events (stressor exposures) and subjective assessments of stress (perceived stress) within specific life domains. METHODS: This article reviews and catalogs the peer-reviewed publications that have used the HRS to examine associations betwe…

Neurocognitive performance and mental health of retired female football players compared to non-contact sport athletes.

BACKGROUND: Adverse long-term effects of playing football due to repetitive head impact exposure on neurocognition and mental health are controversial. To date, no studies have evaluated such effects in women. AIMS: To (1) compare neurocognitive performance, cognitive symptoms and mental health in retired elite female football players (FB) with retired elite female non-contact sport athletes (CON), and to (2) assess whether findings are related to history of concussion and/or heading exposure in FB. METHODS: Neurocognitive performance, mental health and cognitive symptoms were assessed using

From Group-Level Statistics to Single-Subject Prediction: Machine Learning Detection of Concussion in Retired Athletes.

There has been increased effort to understand the neurophysiological effects of concussion aimed to move diagnosis and identification beyond current subjective behavioral assessments that suffer from poor sensitivity. Recent evidence suggests that event-related potentials (ERPs) measured with electroencephalography (EEG) are persistent neurophysiological markers of past concussions. However, as such evidence is limited to group-level analyzes, the extent to which they enable concussion detection at the individual-level is unclear. One promising avenue of research is the use of machine learning

Practice parameter: therapies for essential tremor [RETIRED]: report of the Quality Standards Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology.

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common tremor disorders in adults and is characterized by kinetic and postural tremor. To develop this practice parameter, the authors reviewed available evidence regarding initiation of pharmacologic and surgical therapies, duration of their effect, their relative benefits and risks, and the strength of evidence supporting their use. METHODS: A literature review using MEDLINE, EMBASE, Science Citation Index, and CINAHL was performed to identify clinical trials in patients with ET published between 1966 and August 2004. Frailty and depressive symptoms multitrajectories with cognitive function in couples: Findings from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Both frailty and depressive symptoms are concurrently associated with the decline in cognitive function. Most existing studies have focused on individual-level analyses rather than dyadic investigations among couples. This study aims to explore the longitudinal developmental patterns of frailty and depressive symptoms in couples and further examine cognitive function trajectories across these distinct multitrajectory groups. METHODS: Based on longitudinal data of 5828 couples from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2020, group-based trajectory modeling…

Perceived Neighborhood Cohesion Across the Life Course and Late-Life Friendship: Evidence From the U.S. Health and Retirement Study.

How does neighborhood cohesion across the life course shape late-life friendship? Using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study, this study examines how neighborhood cohesion in childhood, midlife, and late life influences structural, behavioral, and affective dimensions of friendship in older adulthood. Marginal structural generalized estimating equations models estimate independent and cumulative effects across life stages. Neighborhood cohesion at all three stages is independently associated with a greater number of close friends and stronger perceived support. The associatio…

Adaptive immune cells and kidney function in older adults: sex-specific associations in the health and retirement study (HRS).

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation. Aging of the adaptive immune system, marked by a shift from naïve to memory T-cell phenotypes, is associated with systemic "inflammaging", but sex-specific associations between these immunophenotypes and kidney function in older adults remain poorly understood. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 8,970 participants (aged ≥56 years) in the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Venous Blood Study. Seventeen adaptive immune cell subsets were quantified using multiparameter flow…

Retrospective Analysis of Circumstances of Falls and Related Injuries across Levels of Care in Older Adult Retirement Home Facilities.

Towards developing more effective interventions for fall-related injuries, this study analysed a novel database from six retirement home facilities over a 4-year period comprising 1,877 fallers and 12,445 falls. Falls were characterized based on location, activity, injury site, and type, and the database was stratified across four levels of care: Independent Living, Retirement Care, Assisted Care, and Memory care. Falls most occurred within the bedroom (62.8%), and during unknown (38.1%), walking (20.2%), and transfer tasks (14.6%). Approximately one in three (37%) of all falls resulted in an …

[Desire for early retirement and therapy of chronic back pain: relevance of social medical variables for outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment].

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the influence of patients' desire for early retirement on the success of an outpatient cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) in patients with chronic back pain. Previous studies have shown that the desire for early retirement and social compensation had a negative influence on therapy outcome, e.g. pain intensity and pain disability. This study was conducted to reassess whether these results can be replicated in an outpatient CBT setting. METHOD: Questionnaires assessing pain-related variables were issued to a total of 116 patients at the beginning, at the …
