Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare disorder characterized by proliferation of the lymphoid tissue. Clinically, it presents in two forms either a unicentric (UC) or multicentric. Mediastinum is the most common location. UC retroperitoneal presentation is rare. We report a case of 29-year-old female who presented with left loin pain, and on abdominal imaging, evaluation identified a retroperitoneal mass in the left hypochondrium in the pararenal space. A wide range of pediatric diseases involve the retroperitoneum and require imaging for evaluation. This article reviews the clinical aspects and MR imaging appearances of these diseases and describes how MR imaging can be used to evaluate the retroperitoneum in children.

Injuries of the colon and retroperitoneum are rarely observed after blunt abdominal trauma and occur in about 5 - 20 % of the patients. BACKGROUND: Primary retroperitoneal teratomas are rare and occur mostly in the sacrococcygeal area of children. They constitute less than 4% of all extragonadal teratomas with less than 120 cases having been reported, and only partly described in the retroperitoneum of adults. BACKGROUND: Hydatid disease (HD) is endemic in many parts of the world. It may develop in almost any part of the body; the liver is the organ most frequently involved. HD in an unusual location may make differential diagnosis difficult. Isolated retroperitoneal HD is extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: We report herein a case of retroperitoneal HD mimicking retroperitoneal malignant tumor.
CONCLUSIONS: HD should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all cystic masses in all anatomic locations, especially in regions of the world where the disease is endemic.

Inflammatory pseudotumors present clinically as mass lesions and microscopically show a spectrum of nonspecific inflammatory and regenerative changes. When the mesentery or retroperitoneum are involved, differentiation from inflammatory fibrosarcoma poses a diagnostic problem. The authors report on a 7-year-old boy who presented with fever, anemia, weight loss, and a retroperitoneal mass. Needle biopsy results of the mass showed features consistent with inflammatory pseudotumor. Examination of the resected mass showed actinomycosis.

Retroperitoneal cysts are most commonly found in relation to the small bowel but may be found in the mesentery of the colon or in the omentum. Only a few hundred cases have been reported. In the present analysis four more cases are reported and the pertinent literature is reviewed. The diagnosis is made by clinical suspicion, barium meal and/or enema, sonography and axial computerized tomography. Treatment of choice is by enucleation of the cyst, if possible. Morbidity and mortality should be very low, because of recent advances in surgery and intensive care of the patient.

Two cases of pseudocysts associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis and ureteral obstruction are described. Chemical analysis in the first case identified the retroperitoneal cyst as chylous in origin. In the second case the cystic area within the retroperitoneal fibrosis disappeared following treatment with steroids.

Magnetic resonance imaging techniques have made it possible to delineate a variety of pathologic processes in the retroperitoneum, including lymphadenopathy, atherosclerotic and aneurysmal disease of the aorta, congenital venous anomalies, and primary and secondary retroperitoneal neoplasms. The availability of multiplanar image display, the excellent soft tissue contrast resolution, and the fact that exogenous contrast materials are not needed are valuable assets of this imaging modality.

An extragenital metastatic seminoma in a patient with Klinefelter's syndrome is described. The increased incidence of many types of malignancies in patients with this chromosomal abnormality and the increased susceptibility of XXY cells to transformation by oncogenic SV-40 virus are discussed. BACKGROUND: Liposarcoma is a soft tissue sarcoma of adipocyte origin. Liposarcoma represents 20-30% of adult soft tissue tumors, which was most frequently seen in the retroperitoneal space in 45% and abdominal space in only 5% of cases, but the multicentric case is unknown. Retroperitoneal abscesses may develop insidiously, resulting in delayed diagnosis with significant morbidity and mortality. Subcutaneous emphysema of the thigh may be a late manifestation of this process, and often heralds a poor prognosis because of associated myonecrosis and fulminant sepsis. The presentation and clinical course of such a patient is summarized, and the relevant anatomy of the retroperitoneal spaces that predisposes to this condition is described.
