NSm protein of Rift Valley fever virus suppresses virus-induced apoptosis.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a member of the genus Phlebovirus within the family Bunyaviridae. It can cause severe epidemics among ruminants and fever, myalgia, a hemorrhagic syndrome, and/or encephalitis in humans. The RVFV M segment encodes the NSm and 78-kDa proteins and two major envelope proteins, Gn and Gc. The biological functions of the NSm and 78-kDa proteins are unknown; both proteins are dispensable for viral replication in cell cultures. To determine the biological functions of the NSm and 78-kDa proteins, we generated the mutant virus arMP-12-del21/384, carrying a large delet…

Prevalence of antibodies against Rift Valley fever virus in Kenyan wildlife.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arbovirus associated with periodic outbreaks, mostly on the African continent, of febrile disease accompanied by abortion in livestock, and a severe, fatal haemorrhagic syndrome in humans. However, the maintenance of the virus during the inter-epidemic period (IEP) when there is low or no disease activity detected in livestock or humans has not been determined. This study report prevalence of RVFV-neutralizing antibodies in sera (n=896) collected from 16 Kenyan wildlife species including at least 35% that were born during the 1999-2006 IEP. Specimens from s…

Could bats act as reservoir hosts for Rift Valley fever virus?

The inter-epizootic reservoir host of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) remains unknown, although the namaqua rock rat, Aethomys namaquensis, as well as bats have been implicated. Bats can be asymptomatically infected with rabies, as well as several arboviruses; the possibility that they can act as host for RVFV therefore exists. To examine this possibility, 350 different samples (brain, liver, salivary glands and brown fat) obtained from 150 bats (comprising seven species) were tested for RVFV antigen using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). None of the samples tested positive, but th…

Seroepidemiological investigation and risk factors of Q fever and Rift valley fever in livestock in Bangladesh.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging and re-emerging mosquito-borne zoonosis of major economic, public health, and veterinary importance, often causing great population-level impact. Q fever remains a neglected zoonotic disease of considerable public health and veterinary significance, responsible for notable economic losses for livestock farmers. Despite their significance, the epidemiology of RVFV and Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) remains poorly understood, with little evidence on their seroprevalence and associated risk factors. We conducted a cross-sectional study to estimate the seropreva…

Goat seropositivity as an indicator of Rift Valley fever (RVF) infection in human populations: A case-control study of the 2018 Rift Valley fever outbreak in Wajir County, Kenya.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a viral zoonosis, which is considered as a threat to food security in the Horn of Africa. In Kenya, RVF is the 5th ranked priority zoonotic disease due to its high morbidity and mortality, frequent outbreak events, and associated socioeconomic impacts during outbreak events. In 2018, an RVF outbreak was confirmed in Kenya's Siaya, Wajir, and Marsabit counties. During this outbreak, 30 people were confirmed infected with RVF through laboratory tests; 21 in Wajir, 8 in Marsabit, and 1 in Siaya Counties. Seventy-five (75) households (15 cases and 60 controls) were selec…

[Present status of an arbovirus infection: yellow fever, its natural history of hemorrhagic fever, Rift Valley fever].

In the early 20th century, when it was discovered that the yellow fever virus was transmitted in its urban cycle by Aedes aegypti, measures … , yellow fever is an haemorrhagic fever with hepatitis similar to other haemorrhagic fevers such as Rift Valley fever. When, in 1987, an outbreak of haemorrhagic fever occurred in southern Mauritania, for several days it was thought to be yellow fever. Four days later, the diagnosis was corrected by isolating and identifying the virus as that of Rift Valley fever ( …

Rift Valley Fever at the Crossroads of Ecology Mobility and Fragmented Health Governance.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) remains one of the most recognisable yet persistently elusive zoonotic diseases in Africa, despite decades of scientific advances in virology, epidemiology, and early warning. While RVF dynamics are well characterised in eco-epidemiological terms, its continued emergence, amplification, and persistence suggest that biological complexity alone does not fully explain ongoing transmission patterns. This review adopts a socio-ecological One Health systems perspective to examine how interactions between eco-epidemiological processes, livestock mobility, and health governance…

Evaluation of Inactivation Methods for Rift Valley Fever Virus in Mouse Microglia.

Rift Valley fever phlebovirus (RVFV) is a highly pathogenic mosquito-borne virus with bioweapon potential due to its ability to be spread by aerosol transmission. Neurological symptoms are among the worst outcomes of infection, and understanding of pathogenesis mechanisms within the brain is limited. RVFV is classified as an overlap select agent by the CDC and USDA; therefore, experiments involving fully virulent strains of virus are tightly regulated. Here, we present two methods for inactivation of live virus within samples derived from mouse microglia cells using commercially available kits…

Validated Methods for Effective Decontamination and Inactivation of Rift Valley Fever Virus.

The Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arthropod-borne, zoonotic, hemorrhagic fever virus that can cause severe diseases both in livestock and humans. The spread of RVFV in areas previously considered as non-endemic together with the absence of licensed vaccines for use in humans and animals poses a major health and economic threat worldwide. It is therefore crucial to make major progresses in our understanding and management of this virus and its zoonosis. RVFV is considered a bioterrorism pathogen, and, thus, only a few institutes, facilities, and personnel are legally authorized to detain…

A Countrywide Seroepidemiological Survey of Rift Valley Fever in Livestock, Uganda, 2017.

In 2016, an outbreak of Rift Valley fever was reported in the Kabale District in Uganda for the first time in 48 years. Three human cases were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction, and subsequent serological investigations revealed an overall IgG seropositivity of 13% in humans and 13% in animals. In response to this reemergence, we designed a countrywide survey to determine the seropositivity of anti-Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) IgG antibodies in livestock. Samples were collected from 27 districts and tested for RVFV anti-IgG antibodies. A total of 3,181 livestock samples were tested, of …
