The histological reactions of Mastomys natalensis induced by the larvae of Oestromyia leporina are described from the start of the infection to the complete healing of the evacuated cyst. Against the migrating larva no cellular reactions take place. After the larva settles, the most obvious feature is a non-suppurative inflammation of the surrounding tissue, while a layer of granulation tissue, infiltrated with eosinophils, is built up around the parasite. About 13 days p.i. the number of eosinophils starts to decrease again. No giant cells are present; plasmocytes and lymphocytes are relative

Dystocia (prolonged, difficult, and/or delayed parturition) results from a variety of potential clinical conditions including uterine inertia, hormonal imbalances, oversized fetuses, abnormal orientation of fetuses in the birth canal, etc. In the laboratory, dystocia frequently results in euthanasia. In 2020, the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute's Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology committee formed a working group to discuss anecdotal reports of increased incidence of dystocia amongst laboratory rodents. Based on an initial survey completed by contributing laboratories, it be

BACKGROUND: Making decisions is a vital part of life for all beings. Impaired decision-making can lead to various neuropsychiatric diseases and problems, such as drug addiction and gambling. Therefore, it is essential to identify the causes of these disorders and seek effective treatments. Rodents play a key role in studying the brain's neural mechanisms of emotional and cognitive control.
METHODS: In this systematic review, we focused on the role of the anterior cingulate cortex in cost-benefit decision-making by assessing extracellular neural activity in rodents. We extracted 46 articles fr

The study describes the occurrence of cysticercosis in liver of 22 wild agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina) in the Brazilian Amazon. The phylogenetic analysis and microscopic characteristics of metacestodes in liver tissue sections, associated with the geographic distribution of the intermediate hosts indicated that a possibly novel Taenia sp. metacestode caused the parasitism. Additionally, two cases of hepatic co-infection by Taenia sp., Calodium sp. and Echinococcus oligarthra were also observed among the analyzed animals. The results point to the need for a better understanding of hepatotropic p

Zoonotic pathogens are responsible for most infectious diseases in humans, with rodents being important reservoir hosts for many of these microorganisms. Rodents, thus, pose a significant threat to public health. Previous studies in Senegal have shown that rodents harbour a diversity of microorganisms, including human pathogens. Our study aimed to monitor the prevalence of infectious agents in outdoor rodents, which can be the cause of epidemics. We screened 125 rodents (both native and expanding) from the Ferlo region, around Widou Thiengoly, for different microorganisms. Analysis, performed

The incidence of plague has rebounded in the Americas, Asia, and Africa alongside rapid globalization and climate change. Previous studies have shown local climate to have significant nonlinear effects on plague dynamics among rodent communities. We analyzed an 18-year database of plague, spanning 1998 to 2015, in the foci of Mongolia and China to trace the associations between marmot plague and climate factors. Our results suggested a density-dependent effect of precipitation and a geographic location-dependent effect of temperature on marmot plague. That is, a significantly positive relation

In contrast to the main olfactory system that detects volatile chemicals in the nasal air, the vomeronasal system can detect nonvolatile chemicals as well as volatiles. In the vomeronasal system, chemicals are perceived by the vomeronasal organ (VNO) projecting axons to the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). Beavers (Castor spp.) are semiaquatic mammals that have developed chemical communication. It is possible that the beaver's anal gland secretions, nonvolatile and insoluble substances, may work as a messenger in the water and that beavers may detect the nonvolatile chemicals floating on the wa

The vagus nerve is the largest autonomic nerve and a major target of stimulation therapies for a wide variety of chronic diseases. However, chronic recording from the vagus nerve has been limited, leading to significant gaps in our understanding of vagus nerve function and therapeutic mechanisms. In this study, we use a carbon nanotube yarn (CNTY) biosensor to chronically record from the vagus nerves of freely moving rats for over 40 continuous hours. Vagal activity was analyzed using a variety of techniques, such as spike sorting, spike-firing rates, and interspike intervals. Many spike-clust

Celiac disease (CD) is a disorder that affects both children and adults. Over the few last decades, several new atypical cases have been identified through improved diagnostic tools. On the other hand, the onset of CD at a later age, including atypical CD forms whose clinical picture overlaps with other autoimmune diseases, shows that currently there are several unknown gene mutations, which could be responsible for the disease development. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is entity included by the ingestion of gluten leading to intestinal, or extraintestinal symptoms that improve once the

A critical component of an animal care biosecurity plan includes the sterilization of materials that come into direct contact with the animals. Dry-heat sterilization is gaining popularity in animal research facilities due to lower cost, less space utilization, no water usage, and the ability to sterilize water-sensitive materials. Currently, dry-heat sterilization ovens are validated against Bacillus atropheus spore strips with the assumption that a lack of sporulation is equivalent to successful sterilization. However, no published studies describe sterilization of rodent cages that contain

Capybaras have been victims of collisions against vehicles, which can result in fractures of the teeth and mandible. Then, a local anaesthetic block of the inferior alveolar and mental nerves is important for performing therapeutic procedures in the oral cavity of these rodents. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe the mandibular morphometry of the capybara with emphasis on the establishment of anatomic references for anaesthetic block of the inferior alveolar and mental nerves. For this, mandibles from eight young and adult capybaras were used. Radiography and morphometry of the capyba

INTRODUCTION: Rodents and other small mammals can serve as reservoirs for a large number of zoonotic pathogens. A higher risk of infection with rodent-borne pathogens exists for humans with direct contact to rodents and/or their excretions, e.g., soldiers in operation areas. To date, little is known about endemic human pathogenic disease agents that are naturally associated with small mammals in Afghanistan. The aim of this study was to screen abundant rodents and insectivores collected from 2009 to 2012 in four field camps of the German Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) in Northern Afghanista

Odor perception begins with the detection of odorant molecules by the main olfactory epithelium located in the nasal cavity. Odorant molecules bind to and activate a large family of G-protein-coupled odorant receptors and trigger a cAMP-mediated transduction cascade that converts the chemical stimulus into an electrical signal transmitted to the brain. Morever, odorant receptors and cAMP signaling plays a relevant role in olfactory sensory neuron development and axonal targeting to the olfactory bulb. This review will first explore the physiological response of olfactory sensory neurons to odo
