Rosemary extract mitigates deoxynivalenol-induced intestinal inflammation in weaned piglets via activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and suppression of NF-κB/MAPK signaling.

This study investigated the protective role of rosemary extract (RE) against intestinal inflammation induced by deoxynivalenol (DON) in weaned piglets. Sixty piglets were randomly allocated to three dietary treatments for a 21-day period: a basal diet (Control), a basal diet supplemented with 1.5 mg/kg DON (DON group), and a basal diet containing 200 mg/kg RE plus 1.5 mg/kg DON (RE + DON group). Dietary RE supplementation alleviated the negative impacts of DON on growth performance and organ indices (liver and spleen), while also improving DON-induced alterations in serum biochemical markers.

Differential neuroprotective mechanisms of rosemary and carnosic acid in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.

OBJECTIVE: Rosemary is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb recognized for its therapeutic potential in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Its primary active constituent, carnosic acid, has been shown to reduce infarct volume in ischemic stroke models. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of rosemary and carnosic acid, and their specific actions in ischemic stroke remain incompletely understood. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of rosemary and carnosic acid using a middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion model, and predicted their mechanism

Effects of cinnamon, rosemary and oregano on growth performance, blood biochemistry, liver enzyme activities, excreta microbiota and ileal morphology of Campylobacter jejuni-challenged broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Phytogenic additives would be helpful to mitigate the detrimental impact of Campylobacter jejuni on broiler chickens. OBJECTIVE: The experiment aimed to assess the effects of cinnamon, rosemary and oregano powder on physiological responses of broiler chickens challenged with C. jejuni from 0 to 42 days of age. METHODS: A total of 192 one-day-old male broiler chickens were divided into 6 treatment groups. The treatments included: negative control (NC; basal diet without additives and no C. jejuni challenge), positive control (PC; basal diet with C. jejuni challenge), PC with cinna

Testing various herbs for antithrombotic effect.

OBJECTIVE: Prevention of arterial thrombotic diseases has high priority in developed countries. Because people who eat inappropriate food are prone to thrombotic events, regular intake of an antithrombotic diet may offer a convenient and effective way of prevention. The aim of the present study was to find herbs that have antithrombotic effects. METHODS: Herbs were crushed and centrifuged and the juice obtained was filtered. The effect of filtrate on platelet-rich thrombus formation was assessed by a shear-induced in vitro platelet function test (hemostatometry). Filtrates showing significant

Induction of heat shock protein synthesis in human skin fibroblasts in response to oxidative stress: regulation by a natural antioxidant from rosemary extract.

Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the severe connective tissue damage present in several photodermatologic disorders, including drug-induced phototoxicity, porphyrias and photoaging. Oxidative stress has been shown to alter the expression of mammalian antioxidant enzymes and to enhance numerous transcription factors, including nuclear factor-kappa B, stress-activated protein kinase and heat shock factor. The latter represents the transcription factor for the synthesis of cytoprotective proteins called heat shock proteins. In this study, we investigated the rol

Hepatic abscess secondary to a rosemary twig migrating from the stomach into the liver.

The ingestion of a foreign body that penetrates the gastric wall and migrates to the liver, where it causes an abscess is uncommon. A case of an ingested rosemary twig perforating the gastric antrum, then migrating to the liver, complicated by hepatic abscess and Staphylococcus aureus sepsis is reported. A 59-year-old man without a history of foreign body ingestion was admitted to our hospital because of sepsis and epigastralgia, which had progressively worsened. No foreign body was identified at preoperative imaging, but a rosemary twig was discovered during laparotomy. The liver abscess and

Influence of plant cover on the long-term dynamics of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal SynCom in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment.

The influence of the plant cover on the composition of an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal synthetic community (SynCom) was studied in a time-course experiment. A mesocosm system was designed to mimic the environmental conditions of a semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystem, allowing the assessment of changes in AM fungal establishment, persistence, and sporulation within the SynCom. The mesocosm system included soil, AM fungi and plant species characteristic of the target region from Southern Spain. Retama sphaerocarpa, Lavandula latifolia, Thymus mastichina and Rosmarinus officinalis were select…

Potential Application of Origanum majorana Stabilized Silver Nanoparticles for Coating of Urinary Catheter.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infections related to catheters are one of the most common urinary infections and can affect patient outcomes. Hence, coating urinary catheters is an important issue against several resistant bacterial pathogens that can form a resistant biofilm. This study examined the antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of the coated catheter with green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) made from Origanum majorana. METHODS: Aloe Vera, Ocimum basilicum, Matricaria chamomilla, Foeniculum vulgare, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Origanum majorana, Urtica urens, Salvia Rosmarinus, and Salvia off…

The Impact of Thyme and Rosemary on Prevention of Osteoporosis in Rats.

Osteoporosis poses an important public health problem which affects millions of people worldwide. There is a direct link between calcium deficiency in diet and induction of osteoporosis and bone loss. The current study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) against osteoporosis in rats with low calcium intake. Essential oils of rosemary and thyme were analyzed. The experiment was carried out on growing male Sprague-Dawley rats; the experimental animals were divided into 5 groups: 1, control negative was fed standar…

Inhibition of skin tumorigenesis by rosemary and its constituents carnosol and ursolic acid.

A methanol extract of the leaves of the plant Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary) was evaluated for its effects on tumor initiation and promotion in mouse skin. Application of rosemary to mouse skin inhibited the covalent binding of benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P] to epidermal DNA and inhibited tumor initiation by B(a)P and 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Topical application of 20 nmol B(a)P to the backs of mice once weekly for 10 weeks, followed 1 week later by promotion with 15 nmol 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) twice weekly for 21 weeks, resulted in the formation of 7.1 tumors p…
