BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the foremost cause of acute gastroenteritis among infants in resource-poor countries, causing severe morbidity and mortality. The currently available rotavirus vaccines are effective in reducing severity of the disease but not the infection rates, thus antivirals as an adjunct therapy are needed to reduce the morbidity in children. Viruses rely on host cellular machinery for nearly every step of the replication cycle. Therefore, targeting host factors that are indispensable for virus replication could be a promising strategy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the therapeutic pote

Equine rotaviruses were first detected in foals over 30 years ago and remain a major cause of infectious diarrhoea in foals. During this time, there has been substantial progress in the development of sensitive methods to detect rotaviruses in foals, enabling surveillance of the genotypes present in various horse populations. However, there has been limited epidemiological investigation into the significance of these circulating genotypes, their correlation with disease and the use of vaccination in these animal populations. Our knowledge of the pathogenesis of rotavirus infection in foals is

Infectious diarrhea is a common disease in preschool children, but the pathogenic species, origins, and influencing factors remain debatable. Therefore, more studies are required to solve these debatable topics. A number of 260 eligible preschool children diagnosed with infectious diarrhea in our hospital were enrolled in the infection group. Meanwhile, a number of 260 matched healthy children from the health center were enrolled in the control group. The pathogenic species and origins, the time of onset of infectious diarrhea in the infection group, demographic data, exposure history, hygiene

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea remains among the highest causes of death in children under 5 years of age in developing countries. Before the introduction of rotavirus vaccine in Tanzania, rotavirus infection was the leading cause of severe diarrhoea in children below the age of 5 years but there is a paucity of studies reporting the severity of this infection after the introduction of rotavirus vaccine. This hospital-based study reports the proportion of children with rotavirus-associated diarrhoea in Dar es Salaam, its severity and associated factors.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study

Rotaviruses infection is one of the main causes of diarrhea among infants and children in the world, resulting in rotavirus gastroenteritis, which is very harmful and has caused a huge disease burden and no specific drug treatment. This paper reviews the rotavirus etiology, epidemiological characteristics, disease burden of rotavirus gastroenteritis and rotavirus vaccines. RV in group A is the main cause of acute gastroenteritis in infants, people at all ages are generally susceptible to RV, 3 to 24 months infants have the most severe symptoms of diarrhea, RVGE epidemic is seasonal and peaks i

PURPOSE: Rotavirus causes nearly 40% of all hospitalizations for AGE among children <5 years of age in the NIS of the former Soviet Union. The etiologic role of other established gastroenteritis viruses in this age group is unknown.
METHODS: Laboratory-confirmed rotavirus negative fecal specimens (N=495) collected between January and December 2009 from children in 6 NIS (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) were tested for norovirus, sapovirus, enteric adenovirus and astrovirus by real-time RT-PCR. Genotyping was carried out by sequencing and phylogenetic an

BACKGROUND Infectious diarrheal illnesses such as rotavirus gastroenteritis are significant contributors to childhood morbidity and mortality, especially in low socio-demographic index regions. Major advances in addressing this issue include sanitation and clean water initiatives, as well as rotavirus immunization. In Australia, a robust vaccination program has significantly reduced childhood rotavirus infections, leading to decreased hospitalizations and mortality. However, cases of adult rotavirus still occur, and although these adult patients usually do not require interventional management…

A prospective, multicentre study was conducted in four sentinel surveillance hospitals to assess the trend and epidemiology of acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus in Vietnam. During the period 2012-2015, a total 8,889 children under 5 years of age were enrolled in the surveillance, and 8689 stool samples were collected. Of these cases, Rotavirus was most common pathogen 46.7% (4054 cases); in which 26.6% (1117) rotavirus-positive stool samples were evaluated to identify genotypes. The proportion of rotavirus positive specimens decreased annually from 54.7% in 2012 to 36.6% in 2015. Rotavirus wa

OBJECTIVE: Rotavirus enteritis is closely associated with intestinal epithelial injury, gut microbial dysbiosis, and mucosal immune perturbation; however, the microbiota-host mechanisms underlying the protective effects of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) remain incompletely defined. This study aimed to characterize LGG-induced microbiota-host transcriptomic remodeling in neonatal mice with rotavirus enteritis using an integrated multi-omics framework.
METHODS: BALB/c suckling mice were assigned to Control, Model, and LGG groups. Rotavirus enteritis was induced by oral gavage with SA11 r

Innate resistance to viral infections can be attributed to mutations in genes involved in the immune response, or to the receptor/ligand. A remarkable example of the latter is the recently described Mendelian trait resistance to clinically important and globally predominating genotypes of rotavirus, the most common agent of severe dehydrating gastroenteritis in children worldwide. This resistance appears to be rotavirus genotype-dependent and is mainly mediated by histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs), which function as a receptor or attachment factors on gut epithelial surfaces. BACKGROUND: India was among the first Southeast Asian countries to introduce rotavirus vaccines (Rotavac and Rotasiil) into its Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Both showed efficacy in trials and protection against multiple genotypes, though concerns remain about cross-protection and strain selection.
METHODS: We leveraged multicentric surveillance studies to assess the impact of vaccination on circulating rotavirus strains. From 2016 to 2023, hospital-based diarrheal surveillance enrolled children under five hospitalized with acute watery diarrhea. Stool samples were tested by rotavir

The disease burden of rotavirus diarrhea in Vietnam was assessed by surveillance of children <5 years old who were hospitalized for diarrhea at 3 centers in the north and 3 centers in the south. Rotavirus was identified in 56% (range, 47%-60%) of the 5768 patients surveyed between July 1998 and June 2000. G-typing of the first 224 strains indicated that only 2% were non-typeable, 9% were in mixed infections, and the remainder were of the common serotypes G1, G2, G3, G4, and G9. In Vietnam, diarrhea accounts for 9880 deaths per year, which is approximately 15% of all deaths among children <5 ye

Faecal samples from 218 diarrheic dairy calves in 65 dairy herds, selected by convenience, were screened for the presence of rotavirus, coronavirus, Cryptosporidium spp., F5+ Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Animals surveyed were from 1 to 30 days old. Cryptosporidium and rotavirus were the most commonly detected agents (52.3% and 42.7% of the samples positive, respectively). F5+ E. coli was detected in the faeces of 11.9% of the calves and bovine coronavirus was detected in the faeces of 7.3% of the calves. Salmonella spp. was only found in the faeces of two calves (0.9%). Mixed infection

Infectious Diarrhea caused by rotavirus and adenovirus, is a leading cause of death in children in sub-Sahara Africa but there is limited published data on the diverse rotavirus genotypes and adenovirus serotypes circulating in the Republic of Congo. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of severe diarrhea caused by rotavirus A (RVA) and Adenovirus serotype 40 and 41 in Congolese children hospitalized with severe gastroenteritis. Stool samples were collected from 655 Congolese children less than 60 months of age hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis between June 2012 and June 2013. R

Rotavirus is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis in children. Manifestations of rotavirus gastroenteritis beyond gastrointestinal tract are rare. Rotavirus has been reported to be associated with encephalopathy, myositis and elevated liver enzymes; but simultaneous presentation of all these conditions in the same child is extremely rare. The authors report a case of 17-mo-old girl who presented with acute rotavirus gastroenteritis with G3 + G9P[8] strain associated with hypernatremia, encephalopathy, myositis, transaminitis and hypoalbuminemia. Child had complete recovery with no neurologi

Acute gastroenteritis continues to be a major public health problem worldwide. A wide variety of viruses associated with diarrhea disease is being reported continually. This study investigated the epidemiological situation of viruses that cause diarrhea in Japanese pediatric patients. This study enrolled a total of 2,381 fecal specimens collected between 2009 and 2013 from Japanese children with acute gastroenteritis. There is currently a 70.4% prevalence of viruses causing diarrhea among these Japanese pediatric outpatients. Norovirus was detected in 39.3% of the patients, whereas the prevale

We aimed to investigate epidemiology and host- and pathogen-related factors associated with clinical severity of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children after rotavirus vaccination introduction. Factors assessed included age, co-infection with more than 2 viruses, and virus-toxigenic Clostridium difficile co-detection. Fecal samples and clinical information, including modified Vesikari scores, were collected from hospitalized children with AGE. The presence of enteric viruses and bacteria, including toxigenic C. difficile, was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Among the 415 children
