A Note on Some Health-Related Outcomes in Small Ruminant Farms with Common Grazing with Wildlife Ruminants.

The specific objective of the current paper was the description of some health-related outcomes in sheep and goat farms in Greece with common grazing with wildlife ruminants. Faecal samples were collected and information regarding health management applied on farms was obtained from sheep and goat farms located throughout Greece (325 and 119 farms, respectively). Common grazing of livestock (sheep, goats) with wildlife ruminants (roe deer, red deer) was reported in 9.2% of farms. Faecal epg counts in farms with common grazing with wildlife ruminants were higher than in farms with no common gra

Rumination induction task in fMRI: Effects of rumination focused cognitive behavioral therapy and stability in youth.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is implicated in the onset and maintenance of major depressive disorder (MDD). Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (RF-CBT) effectively targets rumination and may change resting-state brain connectivity and change in activation during a rumination induction task (RIT) post-intervention predicts depressive symptoms two years later. We examined brain activation changes during an RIT in adolescents with remitted MDD following RF-CBT and evaluated RIT reliability (or stability) during treatment as usual (TAU). METHOD: Fifty-five adolescents ages 14-17 completed

Early childhood-onset rumination syndrome is clinically distinct from adolescent-onset rumination syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Rumination syndrome (RS) beginning in early childhood or infancy is understudied and challenging to treat. Our objective is to compare the characteristics and outcomes of early-onset (EO) and adolescent-onset (AO) patients with RS. METHODS: We conducted an ambidirectional cohort study of children diagnosed with RS at our institution. Patients were included in two groups: EO (RS symptom onset ≤5 years and diagnosis ≤12 years) and AO (onset >12 years). Patient characteristics, severity, and outcomes were compared between the groups. RESULTS: We included 49 EO and 52 AO RS patients.

Reimagining rumination? The unique role of mental imagery in adolescents' affective and physiological response to rumination and distraction.

Rumination is associated with increased risk for depression whereas distraction helps draw attention away from negative experiences, lowering risk. Many individuals who ruminate do so in the form of mental imagery and imagery-based rumination is more highly associated with depressive symptom severity than ruminating in the form of verbal thoughts. We do not yet understand why imagery-based rumination may be especially problematic nor how to intervene to reduce imagery-based rumination, however. Adolescents (N = 145) underwent a negative mood induction followed by experimental induction of rumi

Potential protective effects of thiamine supplementation on the ruminal epithelium damage during subacute ruminal acidosis.

In ruminants, the ruminal epithelium not only has the function of absorbing nutrients but also is an important tissue to prevent harmful substances in the rumen from entering the blood circulation. Thus, the normal function of ruminal epithelium is critical for ruminants. However, subacute ruminal acidosis induced by high-concentrate diets often damages the barrier function of ruminal epithelium in ruminants. Recently, many studies have shown that dietary supplementation with thiamine is an effective method to alleviate subacute ruminal acidosis. In order to provide theoretical reference for t

Assessing rumination in eating disorders: principal component analysis of a minimally modified ruminative response scale.

A process account of eating disorders (EDs) (Park et al., in press-a) proposes that preoccupation with ruminative themes of eating, weight and shape may be important in ED maintenance. No self-report measure exists to capture disorder-specific rumination in EDs. 275 healthy participants rated rumination items and completed self-report measures of ED symptoms, depression and anxiety. Principal component analysis revealed two factors, reflection and brooding. The final nine-item Ruminative Response Scale for Eating Disorders (RRS-ED) demonstrated good convergent and discriminant validity and tes

Silage intake, rumination and pseudo-rumination activity in sheep studied by radiography and jaw movement recordings.

1. The eating and ruminating activity of four rams given long-chopped silage ad lib. in two daily meals was studied by jaw movement recordings. The events of rumination and pseudo-rumination were observed by fluoroscopy and by cineradiography. 2. The rate of eating was highest at the beginning of the main meal and then declined gradually. 3. The silage intake level was low. 4. The swallowed silage did not accumulate at the cardiac region but was forced into the dorsal sac of the rumen by the contractions of the reticulum and cranial sac of the rumen. For regurgitation the solid particles had t

Interpersonal motivations in adolescent rumination.

In the decades since Nolen-Hoeksema's (1991) original work on response styles, research on rumination has flourished within psychological science. This literature often emphasizes the association of impaired problem-solving with rumination. Spikes in the prevalence of rumination coincide with the entry into adolescence, as youth become increasingly sensitive to social feedback and interpersonal relationships. This article introduces the idea that rumination represents a socially reinforced process in adolescent girls, who are particularly likely to engage in rumination and to find interpersona

Current state of rumination syndrome.

Rumination syndrome (RS) is an underdiagnosed behavioral disorder of recurrent regurgitation. Regurgitation occurs in RS due to increased gastric pressure achieved by subconscious contraction of the abdominal musculature wall, reversing the pressure gradient between the esophagus and the stomach. RS is mainly diagnosed clinically by the Rome Criteria with symptoms of regurgitation without retching of recently ingested food into the mouth and subsequent spitting or re-mastication. When the diagnosis is unable to be made clinically, supportive testing including fed impedance manometry can be con

Rumination syndrome: Critical review.

Rumination syndrome is a functional disorder characterized by the involuntary regurgitation of recently swallowed food from the stomach into the mouth, from where it can be re-chewed or expelled. Clinically, it is characterized by repeated episodes of effortless food regurgitation. The most usual complaint is frequent vomiting. The physical mechanism that generates regurgitation events is dependent on an involuntary process that alters abdominal and thoracic pressures accompanied by a permissive oesophageal-gastric junction. The diagnosis of rumination syndrome is clinical, highlighting the im

Contemplations and Ruminations of Methodological Error.

PURPOSE: Journal articles in our field of oral and maxillofacial surgery are rife with case studies, cohort reviews, meta-analysis, basic science studies, surgical techniques, and anatomic studies. The data found in these studies often rely on multiple measurements by which the authors draw their conclusions. Accurate measurements play a critical role in the design of the study, which in turn affects the conclusion that the author is attempting to convey. Investigators must determine and develop the processes to determine the methodological errors associated with each project to help with dete

[Cognitive therapy of depressive rumination].

Modern approaches to the therapy of depressive ruminations are reviewed. Depressive ruminations are thought to underlie and maintain depression. The authors describe different forms of ruminations and present the analysis of depressive ruminations and the role of childhood experience in their development as well as cognitive-behavioral techniques used for their correction.

Rumination and Impaired Prospective Memory.

Prospective memory (PM), remembering to remember, is crucial to everyday functioning. Understanding factors associated with PM impairments is thus important. One likely factor is rumination: a common cognitive process comprising repetitive self-focused thoughts. We investigated whether rumination is associated with impaired PM, and whether any associated impairment is exacerbated with negative stimuli. A sentence-rating task with sentences varying in valence was used with embedded PM cues in a non-clinical sample (N = 60). State rumination, two trait rumination subtypes (reflective pondering a

Effects of Rumination and Worry on Sleep.

Recent research suggests that the stress-sleep relationship is mediated by pre-sleep arousal (PSA) and that cognitive arousal has a stronger mediating effect than somatic arousal; however, this has not been directly tested. Using multilevel moderated mediation, we compared the effects of cognitive arousal and somatic arousal within the stress-sleep relationship. We also assessed whether two forms of repetitive negative thought-rumination and worry-are similarly involved in the stress-sleep relationship. Data was collected from 178 participants across the United States via an online platform. P

Is Rumination a Risk and a Protective Factor?

High trait positive affect (PA) protects against depressive symptoms through cognitive responses such as rumination. However, how rumination in response to positive emotions (positive rumination) protects against depressive symptoms while rumination in response to negative emotions (brooding) predicts depressive symptoms is poorly understood. We hypothesized that (a) positive rumination and brooding represent a shared cognitive process of affect amplification on distinct affective content and (b) less brooding and greater positive rumination would distinctly mediate greater trait PA in predict
