OBJECTIVE: India had an estimated three to five million excess deaths from causes attributable to SARS-CoV-2 during 2020-2021, far exceeding official government statistics. Most deaths in India occur in rural areas, where medical certification of deaths is limited. Yet, the effects of the pandemic in rural settings remain largely undocumented. We estimated the cause-specific excess mortality in rural areas of selected states of India.
DESIGN: Longitudinal analyses of hospital mortality data.
SETTINGS: India's Health Management Information System (HMIS) reports the number of deaths by cause f

BACKGROUND: Research on public health insurance (PHI) and human capital has focused on direct pathways through which increased medical utilization improves human health capital. However, a possible indirect pathway may also exist: PHI may expand the budget for nonmedical expenditures, some of which are important human capital inputs. This study uses the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) to examine whether two empirical associations are consistent with a potential indirect pathway: NRCMS participation is associated with higher individual caloric intake, and caloric intake is associat

BACKGROUND: Tele-behavioral health (TBH) expanded significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the extent to which this addressed or reinforced existing rural-urban disparities remains unclear, especially in states with diverse and underserved populations. This study investigates the role of rurality and broadband access in TBH utilization among adult Medicaid beneficiaries in New Mexico-a highly rural and racially diverse state.
METHODS: We analyzed New Mexico Medicaid claims data from March 2019 to March 2021 for outpatient behavioral health visits. Using logistic regression models, we a

People living in rural communities are typically underserved by public transportation services and face challenges in accessing healthcare, jobs, stores, and other destinations. Understanding the lived experiences of people who use public transportation in rural communities can help to inform a more equitable transportation system. This qualitative study gathered the perspectives of community health center employees about the public bus system for Hawai'i Island, a rural county in the United States. Using a community-engaged research approach, the evaluation team interviewed 10 employees throu

BACKGROUND: High rates of iron-deficiency anemia among school-age children have been a common issue in developing countries. In 2012, China rolled out a school feeding program (SFP) to address this issue. This study assesses changes in anemia rates, as well as potential factors driving these changes, both 3 and 10 years after the SFP was implemented.
METHODS: Data were from two cross-sectional surveys (n = 1510) in northwestern China. T-tests were used to compare the differences in health outcomes of students and their dietary diversity across the different sample years. Regressions were used

INTRODUCTION: Resource extraction poses a substantial environmental justice problem globally. Community-based efforts to increase environmental health literacy have been linked with reducing exposure and increasing positive health outcomes. However, there is a gap in community-based environmental justice work centering around the education and needs of youth in rural communities.
METHODS: Using frameworks of environmental health literacy, an Ecological Model of Health, and Funds of Knowledge, we facilitated the ongoing STEAM in Action project, where we hosted two community-based youth environ

BACKGROUND: Military veterans are at higher risk of mental health conditions compared to civilians. Some residential characteristics may increase the odds of mental health conditions, but other studies have not examined location attributes (i.e., residential rurality, community social vulnerability, and drive time from Veterans Health Administration [VHA] facilities) and VHA utilization concurrently in association with veteran mental health.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 20,423 veterans enrolled in the Millennium Cohort Study, the longest running and largest study of service members and vete

PURPOSE: Rural veterans experience significant barriers to support, including social isolation and limited access to mental health services, resulting in elevated health risks compared to urban veterans. Inadequate social support is a major obstacle to help-seeking during crises. This study describes the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a peer-driven, community-based Veterans Socials (VS) to enhance support networks and connect non-VA-enrolled rural veterans to a supportive, information-rich community environment.
METHODS: In partnership with a VA Medical Center, six peer speciali

Background: Rabies is almost invariably fatal once clinical symptoms develop, yet it is preventable through canine vaccination and timely post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). In rural Thailand, preventive behaviors likely depend on health literacy and contextual conditions that enable and reinforce protective action, but structural pathways remain unclear. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 750 adults in rabies-risk areas of Si Sa Ket Province, Thailand. A socio-ecological, One Health-informed structural equation model (SEM) examined associations among rabies-related health litera

The 2017 Mental Health Act in the Philippines sought to enhance integrated care; nevertheless, rural regions continue to lack sufficient resources. This study aimed to examine the mental health of low-income Filipino men aged 18 years and over residing in rural areas of the Philippines and explore the relationship between their mental health status and lifestyle and self-care behaviors. A convenience sample of 426 men completed a cross-sectional survey capturing sociodemographics, depression and anxiety, psychological distress, health-related quality of life, and a range of lifestyle behaviors

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that the association between social participation (SP) and mental health may change with age, although the direction of this relationship is unclear. Although some suggest that the mental health benefits of SP decline with age, others argue they become more important in later life. In this article, we suggest a context-dependent divergence in aging trajectories: whereas urban older adults continue to gain mental health benefits from SP, their rural counterparts gradually stop deriving such benefits over time.
METHODS: We drew on four waves of the China Healt

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Oral health problems remain a serious concern in rural areas of underdeveloped countries, where high rates of dental caries and periodontal disease are worsened by limited access to health education. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a culturally adapted dental superheroine to promote oral hygiene practices by encouraging oral health education.
METHODS: This study was conducted in two phases. The first phase involved designing the character and adapting it culturally through stakeholder interviews and qualitative analysis. In the second phase, the superheroine w

For rural youth, seeking mental health care often carries high stakes: in tight-knit communities where 'everyone knows everyone,' privacy is limited, and delays in mental health support can allow manageable symptoms to escalate into crises. Telepsychiatry provides confidential, flexible, and timely access, enabling youth to seek help early and receive support without delay. This perspective synthesizes current evidence on telepsychiatry's benefits and challenges and highlights opportunities for growth through hybrid care models, policy reforms pertaining to payment parity and credentialing by

OBJECTIVES: There are no statewide statistics regarding the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) Alabamians. To fill this gap, we used data collected by the Southern Equality Research and Policy Center to compare Alabama with other southern US states regarding the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people.
METHODS: We tested for unadjusted differences between Alabama and other southern states using χ2 tests for dichotomous outcomes and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test for ordinal outcomes. Multivariate logistic models predicted dichotomous outcomes from an Alabama indicato
