Two archival cases diagnosed 20 years ago on routine neuropathological methods as Encephalitis Necroticans Acuta (ENA) were investigated in EM and by immunohistochemical methods. The previous diagnosis was confirmed only in one case because Herpes simplex virus was found. In the second case the intracellular inclusions visible in ME corresponded to Measles Virus thus previous diagnosis was changed to SSPE.

PURPOSE: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a subacute inflammatory and neurodegenerative encephalitis related to the measles (rubeola) virus and usually affecting children and young adults. The overwhelming majority of cases follow a progressive downhill course leading to death, although there have been a few case reports of patients who have apparently gone into remission. Ocular changes occur in up to 50% of SSPE cases. Visual complaints, if present, generally antedate the onset of neurological symptoms by a few weeks or months. Here, we report two cases of SSPE presenting with o

Levels of immune complexes (ICs) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) patients were measured using a solid-phase C1q radioimmunoassay. Single or serial serum specimens were available from 19 patients, while serial CSF specimens were available from two patients. ICs isolated from one CSF specimen by C1q immobilized to Affi-Gel were analyzed for measles virus antigens by binding of measles virus-specific antisera and by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by Western blotting. Of 78 serum specimens analyzed, 36 (46%) were positiv

Measles virus can give three different forms of infections in the central nervous system. These are acute postinfectious encephalitis, acute progressive infectious encephalitis, and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The postinfectious acute disease is interpreted to reflect an autoimmune reaction. The acute progressive form of brain disease, also referred to as inclusion body encephalitis, reflects a direct attack by the virus under conditions of yielding cellmediated immunity. The late progressive form of encephalitis (SSPE) has been extensively analyzed. Recent molecular genetic st

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive devastating disease. Along with the slow measles virus infection, apoptotic cell death has shown to be one of the major mechanisms at the pathogenesis. Volume reduction in frontotemporal cortex has seen in patients at early stages of disease. At present, there is no effective treatment to completely cure SSPE. Oral isoprinosine and intrathecal or intraventricular alpha-interferon are anti viral therapies with limited success. Flupirtine is an anti apoptotic agent which has been used with limited success in Alzheimer disease, prion dis

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is an inflammatory neurodegenerative disease related to the persistence of measles virus. Although its frequency is declining because of measles eradication, we still have some cases being diagnosed. With the aim to describe epidemiological aspects of SSPE in Brazil, we sent a protocol to Child Neurologists around the country, 48 patients were registered, 27 (56%) were from the southeast region, 34 (71%) were male and 35 (73%) white, 27 (56%) had measles, 9 (19%) had measles and were also immunized, 7 (14%) received only immunization, 1 patient had a

BACKGROUND: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic, progressive disease of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by persistent infection at this level with the wild measles virus. Its incidence is negatively correlated with measles vaccination coverage. The pathogenesis isn't fully understood, but infection before the age of 2 is an important risk factor.
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study conducted at the Louis Turcanu Emergency Children's Hospital in Timisoara, Romania, based on the analysis of the medical records of patients diagnosed with SSPE between

Measles virus matrix protein expression is restricted in the persistently infected brain cells of patients with the chronic neurological disease subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). Prior studies of the nature of this restriction have identified polyadenylylated matrix gene-encoded RNA transcripts unable to direct effective translation. The defective nature of these mRNAs readily accounted for the inability to detect matrix protein in these persistently infected cells and suggested that in SSPE the restriction of matrix protein expression is achieved by preventing its synthesis. Recentl

The neurological sequelae after measles can be encephalitis or subacute sclerosing pan-encephalitis (SSPE). The encephalitis is lethal in 15-18% of the patients, that can rest handicapped at 25%. The SSPE is always lethal. The social and economical consequences of these problems are emphasised. It is suggested nursing care by Leavell & Clark levels of prevention.

A simple and sensitive method for the detection of measles virus genome was developed, amplifying the regions encoding the nucleocapsid (N) protein and hemagglutinin (H) protein of measles virus by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We examined a variety of measles patients: 28 patients with natural infection, 4 with measles encephalitis and 1 with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). In 28 patients with natural measles infection a single step PCR amplifying the N region resulted in a high detection rate for all plasma samples (28/28) within 3 days of the onset of

One of the hallmarks of the human CNS disease subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a high level of measles virus (MV) infection of oligodendrocytes. It is therefore surprising that there is only one previous report of MV infection of rat oligodendrocytes in culture and no reports of human oligodendrocyte infection in culture. In an attempt to develop a model system to study MV infection of oligodendrocytes, time-lapse confocal microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and electron microscopy (EM) were used to study infection of the human oligodendroglioma cell line, MO3.13. A rat oligodendrocy

Increased immunoglobulin G (IgG) and intrathecally produced oligoclonal bands (OGBs) are characteristic of a limited number of inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases and are often directed against the cause of disease. In subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), the cause of disease and the target of the oligoclonal response is measles virus (MV). The authors previously showed that clonally expanded populations of CD38+ plasma cells in SSPE brain, the likely source of OGBs, are directed against MV. In characterizing the breadth of the plasma cell reactivities, the authors found

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare central nervous system degenerative disease that occurs primarily in children and adolescents. It is believed to be caused by a measles-like virus. Initial symptoms usually present as a variety of personality changes followed by myoclonus with progression of mental and motor deterioration, which leads to death within a few months to years. New experimental treatment with inosiplex has been shown to be helpful for patients stricken with this progressive neurological disease. A response to inosiplex therapy is best in patients with a slowly pr

Dystonia has been described in a few cases with SSPE, but there are only very few reports with status dystonicus and none from South India. Here, we report a six-year-old child presenting with severe dystonic posturing of all four limbs and trunk for 10 days duration following a febrile illness and initially treated elsewhere as viral encephalitis. Scalp EEG showed periodic high-amplitude slow wave discharges. MRI brain showed T2/FLAIR hyperintensity in bilateral frontal, left parietal, and deep white matter, extending across the corpus collosum with diffuse cerebral atrophy. The titer for IgG

An autopsy case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in a 5-year-old boy, with rapid progression to a comatose state in 2 weeks after the onset of right hemiplegia, is described. The levels of antibody to measles virus in the serum and the cerebrospinal fluid were increased, and high levels of IgG in the latter were found. A characteristic pattern of electroencephalogram (EEG) showing periodic suppression of high voltage complexes was also found during the course of the disease. Microscopical examination revealed perivascular cuffing, numerous hypertrophied astrocytes with a diffuse g

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is the result of a chronic infection of the central nervous system caused by a mutated measles virus. We present a case of SSPE in a 19-year-old female with congenital HIV-infection. The patient has been using antiretroviral therapy regularly since she was 4 years old. At the age of 15, she contracted measles of moderate severity. At the age 17, she had the HIV viral load < 20 copies/ml and the CD4 count 420 cells/μl. Three years after measles, bilateral necrotizing retinitis developed, and five months later, myoclonic seizures of the left limbs. S

A hamster neuroadapted strain of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus induces in the newborn animal an acute encephalitis with ultrastructural features similar to those observed earlier in measles encephalitis and characteristic of a productive viral infection. The direct immunoperoxidase technique, using labeled SSPE gamma-globulin, was applied to formaldehyde-fixed thick sections. These were either chopped after perfusion of the animal or cryocut after quick freezing of the tissue and then fixed. The latter procedure showed good correlation with light microscopic immunoperoxidase
