BACKGROUND: Bacteroides fragilis is a dominant member of the human intestinal microbiota and is known for its ecological plasticity and capacity to persist under fluctuating intestinal conditions. Bile salts are abundant host-derived molecules that act not only as antimicrobial agents but also as environmental cues shaping bacterial adaptation in the gut.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated how B. fragilis adapts to bile salts at physiological, structural, and metabolic levels.
METHODS: A panel of clinical and commensal strains was evaluated for bile tolerance. The B. fragilis type strain AT

The utilization of industrial microorganisms for the conversion of lignocellulose into high value-added chemicals is an essential pathway towards achieving carbon neutrality and promoting sustainable bioeconomy. However, the pretreated lignocellulase hydrolysate often contains various sugars, salts, phenols/aldehydes and other substances, which requires microorganisms to possess strong tolerance for direct fermentation. This study aims to investigate the tolerance of Candida krusei to substrate, salt, and high temperature shock, in order to validate its potential for utilizing the enzymatic hy

SWEET (Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporter) proteins constitute a conserved family of sugar transporters that play pivotal roles … luding salt sensitivity and repression of SOS genes. These findings indicate that NnSWEET4a impairs salt tolerance through disruption of sugar homeostasis. The results establish a mechanistic framework for future investigations into SWEET-dependent regulation of sugar homeostasis and salt stress adaptation.

β-Cyanoalanine synthase (β-CAS) is an enzyme involved in cyanide detoxification. However, little information is available regarding the effects of β-CAS activity changes on plant resistance to environmental stress. Here, we found that β-CAS overexpression (CAS-OE) improves the resistance of tobacco plants to salt stress, whereas plants with β-CAS silencing suffer more oxidative damage than wild-type plants. Notably, blocking respiration by the alternative oxidase (AOX) pathway significantly aggravates stress injury and impairs the salt stress tolerance mediated by CAS-OE. These findings presen

INTRODUCTION: Ascorbic acid (AsA) is involved in plant responses to various abiotic stresses. However, its specific function in alkaline stress tolerance remains poorly understood. The L-galactono-1,4-lactone dehydrogenase (GLDH) gene is crucial for AsA synthesis, yet the precise role of GLDH in modulating plant resistance to alkaline stress has not been comprehensively characterized.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of GLDH genes in enhancing tolerance to alkaline stress.
METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis of the GLDH gene family members was conducted, and an evolutionary tree was construc

In recent years, probiotics have attracted increasing attention due to their roles in gut health regulation, antimicrobial activity, and metabolic benefits. Given the high-fat dietary characteristics of mink, their intestinal microbiota represents a potential source of functionally valuable lactic acid bacteria. In this study, we evaluated the probiotic properties, safety profile, and functional potential of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ZZM01 isolated from mink intestine. ZZM01 exhibited good tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal conditions, with survival rates of 71.92% at pH 2.0 and 84.71

Exposure of plants to adverse environmental conditions reduces their growth and productivity. Currently, seed priming with phytohormones is considered one of the most reliable and cost-effective approaches that can help alleviate the toxic effects of environmental stress. In this context, the present study aims to investigate the effect of priming alfalfa seeds with salicylic acid (SA) on oxidative stress markers, including malonyldialdehyde, protein content, activities of antioxidant enzymes, and expression of genes encoding these enzymes in leaves and roots of alfalfa (Gabes ecotype) grown u

Mango (Mangifera indica L.), a tropical fruit crop with significant commercial value, is particularly vulnerable to salt stress. Salinity exposure causes severe physiological disruptions, including leaf burning, chlorosis, and stunted growth, especially in the early phases of plant development, and can be mitigated by salt tolerance. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of exogenous melatonin in mitigating salinity stress at 60 mM NaCl. The findings showed that applying melatonin at an optimal level of 150 μM improved photosynthetic efficiency, relative water content, and membrane sta…

Hypersaline sediments derived from poor land management or the decommissioning of large-scale salt production contribute to the long-term degradation of aquatic environments. Obstacles impeding remediation of these environments include salt crusts restricting benthic recolonisation, hypersalinity-induced toxicity to organisms, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles. Remediation often focuses on engineered solutions, despite sediment-biota interactions often playing a crucial role in improving long-term remediation and restoration of contaminated areas. The presence of extensive bioturbating c

Salinity stress severely restricts the culture and geographical expansion of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Artificial selective breeding has generated a salt-tolerant (NY) strain that can survive and grow normally under 10‰ salinity, while the commercial Suhu No.1 (SH) strain and commercial population (PT) exhibit weaker salt adaptability. In the present study, we performed whole-genome resequencing, transcriptome and untargeted metabolomic analyses to systematically reveal the molecular basis of salinity tolerance in the NY strain. Population genetic analyses including ADMIXTURE, PCA and phyloge

High-temperature and high-salinity reservoirs (typically referring here to temperatures ≥ 100 °C and salinities > 100 g/L) impose stringent requirements on chemical flooding and profile-control agents, particularly in terms of thermal stability, salt tolerance, injectivity, and environmental compatibility. In this study, a bio-based composite mobility-control and oil-displacement system was developed by combining carbonized corn-straw particles with the biopolymer scleroglucan. Corn-straw biomass particles were prepared by pyrolysis at 500 °C followed by ball milling for 2 h. Their particle-si…

Environmental factors such as temperature, pH and nutrient level affect enterobacterial acid sensitivity, as do the presence of phosphate and Na+ and the extent of aeration. The mechanisms governing these effects are partially understood and the involvement of phoE, fur and atp in acid tolerance, of phoE, envZ, tonB, (p)ppGpp and cAMP in salt-induced acid sensitivity and of rpoS in stationary-phase acid tolerance are of particular interest. It should be noted that surface attachment enhances acid resistance.
