Biochemical Mechanisms That Buffer the Effects of High Temperatures in the Sand-Dwelling Lizard Holbrookia propinqua.

Reptiles, as ectothermic organisms, rely on environmental temperatures for optimal physiological performance. The thermal requirements for optimal locomotion in reptiles can severely affect their reproduction. However, some species are successful in environments with temperatures exceeding 40 °C. Holbrookuia propinqua is a species that reproduces at high temperatures, a difference from most species in the family Phrynosomatidae, to which it belongs. Adult male H. propinqua specimens were collected at their reproductive stage, kept in separate terrariums, and divided into four groups that were

The Lifecycle of Phlebotomus argentipes (Diptera: Psychodidae) Sand Fly in a Newly Developed Colony in Bangladesh.

Laboratory-established sand fly colonies provide important material for leishmaniasis research; however, the establishment and maintenance of such colonies can be complicated. In this study, a colony of Phlebotomus argentipes (P. argentipes) was established using wild-caught sand flies in Bangladesh by following standard procedures described in the published literature. The colony was initiated in a controlled laboratory environment. A total of 430 female P. argentipes sand flies were collected to develop the colony. Over multiple generations (F0 to F6), 1,034 P. argentipes sand flies laid egg…

A morphological and molecular study of phlebotomine sand flies of Taiwan reveals the record of six species.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies, the key vectors in the transmission of Leishmania parasites, pose a global health challenge. Although leishmaniasis has been reported in the indigenous Taiwanese population, the last sand fly survey, based on morphological features, was conducted over two decades ago. Thus, updated information on the phlebotomine sand fly fauna and disease transmission risk in Taiwan is required. In this study, a nationwide survey was conducted using molecular methods to ascertain the current sand fly status and disease transmission risk in Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 1292…

Persistence of 'wet wipes' in beach sand: An unrecognised reservoir for localised E. coli contamination.

The flushing of wet wipes down toilets leads to blockages of sewerage systems. This, together with unregulated sewage discharge, often results in increasing numbers of wet wipes washing up onto beaches. However, it is unclear how long wet wipes can persist on the beach and whether they pose a prolonged public health risk if contaminated by E. coli. In this mesocosm study, three types of wet wipes (plastic containing, and home and commercially compostable) colonised with E. coli were buried in beach sand and their degradation, tensile strength, and concentration of E. coli was quantified over 1…

Active Adaptive Strategies of Mallard Feet in Response to Changes in Wetness and Compactness of the Sand Terrain.

Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) exhibit exceptional locomotive abilities in diverse terrains, such as beaches, swamps, and tidal flats. This capability is primarily attributed to their unique webbed toe structure and cooperative locomotion posture of their feet. Therefore, this study aims to further delve into the active adaptive strategies of mallard feet in response to diverse external environmental conditions. Six adult male mallards were selected for this research. Their locomotion on sandy surfaces with differing wetness levels and varying degrees of compaction were captured using a high-sp…

Co-Circulation of Leishmania Parasites and Phleboviruses in a Population of Sand Flies Collected in the South of Portugal.

In the Old World, phlebotomine sand flies from the genus Phlebotomus are implicated in the transmission of Leishmania spp. parasites (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) and viruses belonging to the genus Phlebovirus (Bunyavirales: Phenuiviridae). Two of the five sand fly species known to occur in Portugal, Phlebotomus perniciosus and Ph. ariasi, the former being the most ubiquitous, are recognized vectors of Leishmania infantum, which causes visceral leishmaniasis, the most prevalent form of leishmaniasis in the country. Phlebotomus perniciosus is also the vector of the neurotropic Toscana viru…

Some Good and Some Bad: Sand Fly Salivary Proteins in the Control of Leishmaniasis and in Autoimmunity.

Sand flies are hematophagous insects responsible for the transmission of vector-borne diseases to humans. Prominent among these diseases is Leishmaniasis that affects the skin and mucous surfaces and organs such as liver and spleen. Importantly, the function of blood-sucking arthropods goes beyond merely transporting pathogens. The saliva of vectors of disease contains pharmacologically active components that facilitate blood feeding and often pathogen establishment. Transcriptomic and proteomic studies have enumerated the repertoire of sand fly salivary proteins and their potential use for th…

A decadal synthesis of atmospheric emissions, ambient air quality, and deposition in the oil sands region.

This review is part of a series synthesizing peer-reviewed literature from the past decade on environmental monitoring in the oil sands region (OSR) of northeastern Alberta. It focuses on atmospheric emissions, air quality, and deposition in and downwind of the OSR. Most published monitoring and research activities were concentrated in the surface-mineable region in the Athabasca OSR. Substantial progress has been made in understanding oil sands (OS)-related emission sources using multiple approaches: airborne measurements, satellite measurements, source emission testing, deterministic modelin…

Effect of compaction and soil moisture on the effective permeability of sands for use in methane oxidation systems.

Effective gas permeability is an important parameter in the design of methane oxidation systems, governing diffusive oxygen ingress and the spatial spread of landfill gas. The influences of soil texture, compaction, soil moisture and the resulting air filled porosity on the gas permeability were researched by performing pressure loss experiments on two loamy sands, currently in use as methane oxidation layer material. These experiments mimicked the influence of the intrinsic soil properties, the construction method (compaction) and the local climate (soil moisture) on the soils' permeability. …

Effects of carrier on the transport and DDT removal performance of nano-zerovalent iron in packed sands.

The delivery of nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) as a remediation agent to targeted areas in soil was studied using different carriers. Among water, surfactant solution, and surfactant foam, the nZVI transport and carrying abilities followed the order of surfactant foam > surfactant solution > water. The nZVI migration was also facilitated by increased soil particle size and high surfactant concentration. Batch experiments probed the remediation of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)-contaminated sand under different conditions. Compared to surfactant solution, the use of foam as a carrier achiev…

A multi-technique approach for evaluating sand dynamics in a complex engineered piedmont river system.

A multi-technique approach is proposed to study sand dynamics in an engineered piedmont river. Only a few studies focused on such systems and innovative methodological protocols still need to be designed to better understand sand transport in piedmont rivers where bedload dynamics has been largely modified with nowadays a residual sand transport on a fixed gravel matrix. The proposed methodology is based on an analysis of bathymetry and turbidity measurements and on modelling, including the development of sediment rating curves and 2D numerical modelling, and using sediment budgeting for cross…

Sources of Methylmercury to Snowpacks of the Alberta Oil Sands Region: A Study of In Situ Methylation and Particulates.

Snowpacks in the Alberta Oil Sands Region (AOSR) of Canada contain elevated loadings of methylmercury (MeHg; a neurotoxin that biomagnifies through foodwebs) due to oil sands related activities. At sites ranging from 0 to 134 km from the major AOSR upgrading facilities, we examined sources of MeHg by quantifying potential rates of MeHg production in snowpacks and melted snow using mercury stable isotope tracer experiments, as well as quantifying concentrations of MeHg on particles in snowpacks (pMeHg). At four sites, methylation rate constants were low in snowpacks (km = 0.001-0.004 d-1) and n…

Athabasca Oil Sands Petcoke Extract Elicits Biochemical and Transcriptomic Effects in Avian Hepatocytes.

Petroleum coke or "petcoke" is a granular carbonaceous material produced during the upgrading of heavy crude oils, including bitumen. Petcoke dust was recently reported as an environmental contaminant in the Athabasca oil sands region, but the ecotoxicological hazards posed by this complex bitumen-derived material-including those to avian species-have not been characterized. In this study, solvent extracts (x) of delayed and fluid petcoke (xDP and xFP) were prepared and dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide. A water-accommodated fraction of delayed petcoke (waDP) was also prepared. Graded concentrat…
