Rare FUS::FEV-Rearranged Adamantinoma-Like Ewing Sarcoma Arising in the Submandibular Gland.

BACKGROUND: Adamantimoma-Like Ewing Sarcoma (ALES) is a rare variant of Ewing sarcoma that poses significant diagnostic challenges in the head and neck due to morphologic overlap with basaloid carcinomas and neuroendocrine neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a middle-aged man with a left submandibular gland mass showing classic histologic features of ALES, including basaloid nests with peripheral palisading, rosette formation, and high mitotic activity. RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry showed co-expression of p63/p40, CD99, and cytokeratins, with patchy synaptophysin positivity an

FDG PET/CT in a Case of Primary Ewing Sarcoma of the Uterus.

A 23-year-old woman presented with prolonged menstruation for 10 days. Pelvic ultrasound showed multiple masses in the uterus, suspicious for leiomyomas. Pelvic MRI showed an irregular multinodular uterine mass involving the cervix, and bilateral enlarged extrailiac lymph nodes, suggesting uterine malignancy with lymph node metastases. FDG PET/CT showed heterogeneous activity of the uterine mass and multiple FDG-avid lymph nodes in the bilateral pelvic and retroperitoneal regions, suggesting uterine malignancy with multiple lymph node metastases. Hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy,

Factors Influencing the Outcome of Patients with Primary Ewing Sarcoma of the Sacrum.

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma (EwS) is a rare and highly malignant bone tumor primarily affecting children, adolescents, and young adults. The pelvis, trunk, and lower extremities are the most common sites, while EwS of the sacrum as a primary site is very rare, and only few studies focusing on this location are published. Due to the anatomical condition, local treatment is challenging in sacral malignancies. We analyzed factors that might influence the outcome of patients suffering from sacral EwS. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data of the GPOH EURO-E.W.I.N.G 99 trial and the EWING 2008 t

Ewing Sarcoma-Chest Wall Reconstruction Following Resection of Rare Primary Chest Wall Tumor.

Ewing sarcoma (ES) represents the second most common primary osseous malignancy in children and young adults, most often occurring in the diaphysis of the long bones. While rare, ES can present as an osseous tumor of the ribs and/or chest wall. These tumors are known as Askin's tumors and most commonly present with symptoms resembling pneumonia. We report the case of a 26-year-old man who was found to have a right lung mass extending into his anterolateral chest wall after presenting to the hospital for evaluation of unremitting chest pain. Biopsy was performed and the patient diagnosed with E

Clinicopathological and molecular genetic analysis of 13 cases of primary retroperitoneal Ewing sarcoma.

Retroperitoneal Ewing sarcomas (RES) are very rare and mostly described in case reports. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the clinicopathology, molecular characteristics, biological behavior, and therapeutic information of 13 cases of primary RES with immunohistochemical staining, fluorescence in situ hybridization, RT-PCR and NGS sequencing detection techniques. The thirteen patients included eight males and five females with a mean age of 34 years. Morphologically, the tumors were comprised of small round or epithelial-like cells with vacuolated cytoplasm (6/13,46 %)

Primary Ewing sarcoma of the lung: A systematic review of the recent literature.

Primary pulmonary Ewing sarcoma (PES) is a rare malignancy with only sporadic cases reported in the scientific literature. We performed a systematic review of the cases published in the last decade on PubMed, with the aim to describe the clinical, pathological, therapeutic, and prognostic data of PES. Forty-two articles reporting on 50 cases have been reviewed. Globally, 60 % of the patients were males, and the mean age at diagnosis was 30.5 years, with only a few cases diagnosed after 50 years of age. The most common clinical manifestations at diagnosis were dyspnea, cough and chest pain. The

Adamantinoma-like Ewing Sarcoma (ALES) May Harbor FUS Rearrangements : A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (ALES) is a rare malignancy currently considered a variant of Ewing sarcoma with most known cases harboring EWSR1 rearrangements. Herein we present a series of 6 cases of EWSR1 -negative ALES. The tumors arose in the sinonasal tract (n=3), major salivary glands (submandibular gland=1; parotid=1), and anterior mediastinum (n=1) in patients ranging from 25 to 79 years of age. Most tumors were basaloid in appearance, growing in large nests separated by interlobular fibrosis without overt squamous pearls. However, 1 case closely resembled a well-differentiated neuro

Irinotecan plus temozolomide in relapsed Ewing sarcoma: an integrated analysis of retrospective studies.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of patients with relapsed Ewing sarcoma is poor. In this study, we aimed to pooled-analyze the efficacy and safety of the combination of irinotecan and temozolomide in treating patients with relapsed Ewing sarcoma. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and EMBASE were systematically searched on September 27, 2021. The primary outcomes were rates of objective response and disease control, and the secondary outcomes were toxicities. RESULTS: Six retrospective studies with 184 patients were enrolled in the analysis. The median age ranged from 14 to 21. The

Adamantinoma-like Ewing Sarcoma of the thyroid gland: Cytomorphologic, phenotypic and molecular features.

Adamantinoma-like Ewing Sarcoma (ALES) is a rare subtype of Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (EFTs) which are defined by their EWSR1 gene rearrangements. We present a case of a 15-year old female with a swelling in her anterior neck of 4 months duration which had recently begun to rapidly grow in size. Fine needle aspiration showed a small blue round cell tumor with immunoreactivity for cytokeratin, CD99 and FLI1. Material for molecular testing was available on the resection specimen. Demonstration of t(11;22) (EWS-FLI1) was helpful in establishing the diagnosis.

[A Case of Primary Ewing Sarcoma of the Kidney Treated with Multidisciplinary Approach].

A woman in her 40s visited our hospital for further examination and treatment of a left renal tumor. Imaging studies showed that the patient had a large left renal tumor, 10.5 cm in diameter, which contained foci of necrosis. Open left radical nephrectomy was performed. In pathological examination, hematoxylin-eosin staining showed uniform small round cells with alveolar growth. Immunohistochemistry findings showed that CD99 and NKX2. 2 were positive, and synaptophysin was focally positive. Fluorescence in situ hybridization confirmed (11 ; 22) (q24 ; q12) chromosomal translocation which led t

Outcomes following proton therapy for Ewing sarcoma of the cranium and skull base.

PURPOSE: Despite the dosimetric advantages of proton therapy, little data exist on patients who receive proton therapy for Ewing sarcoma of the cranium and skull base. This study reports local disease control and toxicity in such patients. MATERIALS/METHODS: We reviewed 25 patients (≤21 years old) with nonmetastatic Ewing sarcoma of the cranium and skull base treated between 2008 and 2018. Treatment toxicity was graded per the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v4.0. The Kaplan-Meier product limit method provided estimates of disease control and survival. RESULTS: Median patient

Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma of the parotid gland: Cytopathologic findings and differential diagnosis.

Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (AES) is a rare variant of Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (EFTs), primarily affecting bone and soft tissue. AES has mixed features of Ewing sarcoma (ES)/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) and adamantinoma with a complex immunoprofile and EWSR1 gene rearrangements. Herein, we report a 72-year-old male who presented with left parotid mass, right neck mass and thyroid nodules. Fine needle aspiration of the left parotid mass displayed nests of monotonous epithelioid cells with basaloid features in a background of small round blue cells and lymphocytes. AES can i

Ewing sarcoma of the acetabulum in children: a "growth plate-based" surgical strategy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical strategy for Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the pelvis relies on Enneking classification. In adults, in case the acetabulum is involved, excision of the entire acetabulum is needed and often leads to loss of function. In children, the surgeon may adopt a strategy, such as in metaphyseal tumors of long bones where an unaffected growth plate allows a transepiphyseal resection, therefore sparing the joint. METHODS: We present a "triradiate cartilage strategy" for the excision of ES of the pubic component of the acetabulum, which allows a wide resection while preserving most of the so

Primary Ewing sarcoma of the tentorium presenting with intracranial hemorrhage in a child.

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in children is usually related to cerebrovascular conditions. Brain tumors presenting with spontaneous bleeding account for approximately 10% of intracranial hemorrhages in children. The occurrence of primitive central nervous system lesions in the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) not related to bone or metastatic disease is a rare condition. The authors report on a child who presented with intracranial bleeding secondary to a nonmetastatic tentorial ESFT confirmed by detection of the fusion gene EWS-ERG. A detailed review of the literature reveals tha
