The aim of this study was to investigate the association of sarcopenia and diabetic foot disease (DFD) in a cross-sectional study. Body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray-absorptiometry (DXA) among 1105 patients with type 2 diabetes (120 patients with newly diagnosed DFD [DFD duration less than 3 months]). Severity of DFD was assessed, referring to foot ulcers, Wagner grade and the percentage of amputation. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated, and sarcopenia was defined as SMI less than 7.0 kg/m2 (in men) or 5.4 kg/m2 (in women). SMI was significantly decreased in patients…

Sarcopenia refers to the loss of muscle mass and strength seen with advancing age. The pathophysiology is multifactorial, with loss of muscle satellite cells, changes in hormonal systems, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and anabolic resistance to protein utilisation all implicated. Older age, female sex and immobility are important risk factors. Sarcopenia is clinically important as it is a major risk factor for physical frailty, falls, prolonged hospitalisation, dependency and earlier death. Diagnosis requires evidence of reduced muscle mass measured by handgrip strength or walk speed,…

Sarcopenia, the degenerative and systemic loss of skeletal muscle mass, develops as a consequence of the progression of cancer cachexia. Recent studies suggest that sarcopenia may be used as a biomarker in the management of patients with several cancers. Areas covered: In this article, the authors review 1) the methods to simply and optimally evaluate and define sarcopenia using computed tomography images in daily clinical practice and 2) the impact of sarcopenia in the management of urological cancers, specifically focusing on the usefulness in predicting treatment-related complications and p…

BACKGROUND: The present study examined the correlations between obesity, sarcopenia, and osteoarthritis in Korea's elderly population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 1,865 and 1,769 respondents with knee osteoarthritis and lumbar spondylosis, respectively, was performed by using data from the 2010 and 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity was defined as a body mass index of ≥25 kg/m2; osteoarthritis, as a Kellgren/Lawrence grade of ≥2; and sarcopenia, as an appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM; ASM/weight ×100) on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry of tw…

Patients with cancer are at an increased risk for muscle loss via 2 distinct mechanisms: sarcopenia, defined as the age-associated decrease in muscle mass related to changes in muscle synthesis signaling pathways, and/or cachexia, defined as cytokine-mediated degradation of muscle and adipose depots. Both wasting disorders are prevalent; among patients with cancer, 15%-50% are sarcopenic and 25%-80% are cachectic. Muscle mass may be difficult to quantify in overweight/obese individuals. Often, overweight/obese patients with cancer are assumed to be normally nourished when in fact severe muscle…

Skeletal muscles undergo structural and functional decline with ageing, culminating in sarcopenia. The underlying neuromuscular mechanisms have been the subject of intense investigation, revealing mitochondrial abnormalities as potential culprits within both nerve and muscle cells. Implicated mechanisms involve impaired mitochondrial dynamics, reduced organelle biogenesis and quality control via mitophagy, accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage and respiratory chain defect, metabolic disturbance, pro-apoptotic signalling, and oxidative stress. This article provides an overview of the…

UNLABELLED: Sarcopenia is more prevalent in patients with distal radius fracture (DRF) than in age- and sex-matched controls. Lower appendicular mass index in men and weaker grip strength in both men and women increase the likelihood of DRF.
INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a core component of physical frailty that predisposes older people to falls and negatively impacts the activities of daily living. The objectives of this study were to compare the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with DRF with that in age- and sex-matched controls without DRF; and evaluate the association between sarcopenia…

Sarcopenia is the age-associated loss of lean skeletal muscle mass. It is the result of multiple physiologic derangements, ultimately resulting in an insidious functional decline. Frailty, the clinical manifestation of sarcopenia and physical infirmity, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. The underlying pathology results in a disruption of the individual's ability to tolerate internal and external stressors such as injury or illness. This infirmity results in a markedly increased risk of falls and subsequent morbidity and mortality from the resulti…

OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia, a novel concept reflecting the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, is an objective indicator of cancer cachexia. We investigated its role as a prognostic biomarker in advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC) patients.
METHODS: This retrospective study consisted of 88 UC patients with cT4 and/or metastases to lymph nodes/distant organs. Skeletal muscle index (SMI), an indicator of whole-body muscle mass, was measured from computed tomography (CT) images at the diagnosis. Sarcopenia was defined as SMIs of <43 cm(2)/m(2) for males with body mass index (BMI) <25 cm(2)/m(2…

Skeletal muscle abnormalities and loss are frequently present in patients with mild or moderate cardiac heart failure (CHF) and may contribute to fatigue and dyspnea. These muscle abnormalities may be associated with age related body composition changes, such as sarcopenia. Muscle damage has also been observed in subjects with cardiac cahexia, a serious CHF complication, associated with poor prognosis independently of functional disease severity, age, and measures of exercise capacity and cardiac function. Loss of muscle mass is a feature of cachexia, whereas most sarcopenic subjects are not c…

Sarcopenia attenuates independence and mobility in older adults, and scalable nonpharmacological interventions are needed. This trial evaluated whether a 12-week exercise program improves activities of daily living, muscle mass and strength, physical performance, and systemic inflammation in older adults with sarcopenia. In this 12-week randomized controlled trial, adults aged 60-75 years with sarcopenia were randomized 1:1 to a control group or an exercise group. The exercise group performed postprandial multicomponent training (37 min/session, 3 days/week), combining resistance and aerobic e…

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia may affect the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, the causal relationship between sarcopenia and GDM remains unclear. In this study, we used a bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to explore this intricate relationship.
METHODS: This study utilized data from FinnGen datasets and genome-wide association studies. A bi-directional MR study was conducted. First, a forward MR analysis evaluated the causality of sarcopenia on GDM risk, with sarcopenia-related traits as exposures and GDM as the outcome. Second, in the reverse MR analysis, …

Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are two aspects of the geriatric syndrome that frequently occur together and affect one another in a condition referred to as osteosarcopenia. Preventive and treatment options for osteosarcopenia exist but are mainly focused on the treatment of osteoporosis, as there is still no FDA-approved treatment for sarcopenia. Drugs for osteoporosis include antiresorptive and anabolic drugs and hormonal replacement therapies and are prescribed based on age, BMD and other patient characteristics, which, however, do not include the possible co-existence of sarcopenia. As severa…

BACKGROUND: Age-associated sarcopenia is characterized of progressed loss of skeletal muscle power, mass, and function, which affects human physical activity and life quality. Besides, accompanied with sarcopenia, aged population also faces a series of metabolic dysfunctions. Irisin, the cleaved form of fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5), is a myokine induced by exercise and has been shown to exert multiple beneficial effects on health. The goal of the study is to investigate the alterations of Fndc5/irisin in skeletal muscles during ageing and whether irisin administrati…

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is defined by a loss of muscle mass and function associated with mortality, decreased physical performance, falls, and disability. Since chronic inflammation and decreased physical activity are risk factors for developing sarcopenia, it is critical to assess the role of sarcopenia in immune-mediated rheumatic diseases (IMRDs). Moreover, nutritional interventions are emerging as key modifiable and affordable options to improve physical performance in sarcopenia.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to critically summarize current information on the evidence linking nut…
