Somatosensory temporal discrimination remains intact in tension-type headache whereas it is disrupted in migraine attacks.

Background and objective Somatosensory temporal discrimination was recently reported as prolonged during migraine attacks, which is consistent with disrupted sensorial perception in migraine. However, knowledge about central sensory processing in tension-type headache is still lacking. This prospective, controlled study aimed to investigate somatosensory temporal discrimination thresholds in tension-type headache. Methods The study included 10 tension-type headache patients, 10 migraine patients and 10 healthy volunteers without headache. Somatosensory temporal discrimination thresholds were e

Upregulation of inward rectifying currents and Fabry disease neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy and neuropathic pain are common clinical manifestations of Fabry disease (FD). Although the mechanisms underlying the development of sensory neuropathy remain to be fully elucidated, a chronic ischemic process was proposed. Consequently, this study utilized axonal excitability techniques to gain further insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of FD neuropathy. Median motor and sensory axonal excitability studies were undertaken in 13 FD patients and results were compared to 19 healthy subjects. A "fanning-in" of threshold electrotonus, s

Subtle Sensory Abnormalities Detected by Quantitative Sensory Testing in Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is characterized by paroxysmal pain attacks affecting the somatosensory distributions of the trigeminal nerve. It is thought to be associated with a neurovascular conflict most frequently, but pathomechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In general, no sensory deficit is found in routine clinical examination. There is limited data available, however, showing subtle subclinical sensory deficits upon extensive testing. OBJECTIVE: We used quantitative sensory testing (QST) to detect abnormalities in sensory processing in patients with TN by comparing the

Emulsified isoflurane enhances thermal transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 channel activation-mediated sensory/nociceptive blockade by QX-314.

BACKGROUND: QX-314 produces nociceptive blockade, facilitated by permeation through transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) channels. TRPV1 channel can be activated by noxious heat and sensitized by volatile anesthetics. The authors hypothesized that emulsified isoflurane (EI) could enhance thermal TRPV1 channel activation-mediated sensory/nociceptive blockade by QX-314. METHODS: Rats were perineurally injected with QX-314 (Sigma-Aldrich Co. Ltd. Shanghai, China) alone or QX-314 combined with EI, followed by heat exposure on the injection site. The tail-flick and tail-clamping tests

Increased colonic pain sensitivity in irritable bowel syndrome is the result of an increased tendency to report pain rather than increased neurosensory sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether lower visceral pain thresholds in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) primarily reflect physiological or psychological factors. METHODS: Firstly, 121 IBS patients and 28 controls underwent balloon distensions in the descending colon using the ascending methods of limits (AML) to assess pain and urge thresholds. Secondly, sensory decision theory analysis was used to separate physiological from psychological components of perception: neurosensory sensitivity (p(A)) was measured by the ability to discriminate between 30 mm Hg vs 34 mm Hg distensions; psycho

Setting occupational exposure limits in humans: contributions from the field of experimental psychology.

Psychophysical methods from the field of experimental psychology are evaluated for their utility in the derivation of occupational exposure limits (OELs) for volatile chemicals based on acute sensory irritation in humans. The lateralization threshold method, which involves the localization of trigeminal vapor to the stimulated nostril, is evaluated for its underlying assumptions, reliability and validity. Whole body exposures, on the other hand, which involve the controlled, ambient exposure of human subjects to the irritant at one or a series of concentrations for an extended period are also

[Amelioration of nerve growth factor against noise-induced threshold shift: a transmission electron microscope observation].

OBJECTIVE: To study the protective effects of nerve growth factor(NGF) on noise-induced hearing damage in guinea pigs. METHODS: NGF injected Guinea pigs were consecutively exposed to white noise of 115 dB(A) for 6 days continually (45 min.d-1). Auditory thresholds were measured using auditory cortex evoked response to tone bursts in different post-exposure intervals (1 h, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d and 6 d). The ultrastructural changes within hair cells were also observed by a transmission electron microscope(TEM). RESULTS: The auditory threshold shifts in test group A(NGF:1,000 U.kg-1.d-1, i.m.), B(NGF:

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions in the CBA/J mouse model of presbycusis.

CBA mice do not exhibit age-related loss of auditory sensitivity or cochlear pathology until relatively late in life. Therefore, this strain is believed to be an excellent animal model for the examination of the effects of age on the cochlea. To evaluate the effects of age on outer hair cell function, 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured for f2 between 8 and 16 kHz in CBA/J mice between 1 and 25 months of age. CBA mice exhibited mild age-related changes in DPOAE level and detection threshold at 17 months of age, and changes of 20-40 dB by 25 months of age. The

A method of assessment in cases of lingual nerve injury.

A method for assessing lingual sensation is described, comprising sensory testing, using touch and moving two-point discrimination and patient subjective reporting. The clinical application is seen to be the evaluation of lingual nerve injury consequent upon lower third molar surgery. Using this method it is considered possible to identify many of those patients unlikely to make full spontaneous recovery at the stage of 3 months following injury, with a view to achieving an earlier timing of surgical repair than that which prevails at present.

Palatal receptor contribution to and effects of palatal alteration on taste acuity thresholds.

To determine the contribution of the soft palate to the overall taste mechanism and the effects of palatal compromise (surgery, cleft palate, and trauma), four taste solutions representing sweet, salty, sour, and bitter were applied to the apex and base of the tongue and to the soft palate of 12 subjects in each of the control and palatally compromised groups. Each group was tested on two different occasions with the sessions 2 weeks apart and one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Results indicate that the soft palate contributes to bitter and salty sensations to a greater degree

Vibrotactile and thermal perception and its relation to finger skin thickness.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative measurements of vibrotactile and thermotactile perception thresholds (VPT and TPT, respectively) rely on responses from sensory receptors in the skin when mechanical or thermal stimuli are applied to the skin. The objective was to examine if there is a relation between skin thickness (epidermis and dermis) and VPT or TPT. METHODS: Perception thresholds were measured on the volar side of the fingertip on 148 male subjects, out of which 116 were manual workers exposed to hand-transmitted vibration and 32 were white-collar (office) workers. Skin thickness was measured usi

Statistical overview of the Sniffin' sticks olfactory test from the perspectives of anosmia and hyposmia.

The Sniffin' Sticks test is evaluated by summing the scores of threshold, discrimination, and identification subtests to establish an olfactory diagnosis (anosmia, hyposmia, normosmia). However, variations in thresholds, ranges and inconsistencies have been observed. Statistical analyses (distributions, quantiles), protocol simulation, and implementations of the Sniffin' Sticks test were conducted. This study contributes a statistical revision: determining a cut-off point for the total TDI score, optimising the number of alternatives in the identification subtest, and equalising correct respon

Pet Dogs with Subclinical Acute Radiodermatitis Experience Widespread Somatosensory Sensitization.

Radiation-induced dermatitis (RID) is a common and painful complication of radiotherapy. When severe, radiation-associated pain (RAP) can reduce the efficacy of radiotherapy by limiting the radiation dose given, and/or necessitating breaks in treatment. Current RAP mitigation strategies are of limited efficacy. Our long-term goal is to develop a comparative oncology model, in which novel analgesic interventions for RAP can be evaluated. The aim of this study was to validate quantitative end points indicative of RAP in pet dogs with subclinical and low-grade RID. Extremity soft tissue sarcomas

Urge to cough with voluntary suppression following mechanical pharyngeal stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this project was to determine if mechanical stimulation to the posterolateral oropharynx would elicit the urge-to-cou … ge-to-cough and cough in healthy young adults. Like other methods to elicit coughing, the motor and sensory thresholds are different using the oropharyngeal air-puff stimuli. Further, it appears there is a sensitization to the air puff stimuli with later trials associated with stronger urge-to-cough and higher likelihood of coughing versus the first and second trial …

Individual variability in the peripheral and core interthreshold zones.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the degree of subject variability in the peripheral and core temperature thresholds of the onset of shivering and sweating. Nine healthy young male subjects participated in three trials. In the first two trials, wearing only shorts, they were exposed to air temperatures of 5 degrees C and 40 degrees C until the onset of shivering and sweating, respectively. In the second experiment, subjects wore a water perfused suit that was perfused with 25 degrees C water at a rate of 600 cc/min. They exercised on an ergometer at 50% of their maximum work rate fo

Evaluation of the sensory deficit after sural nerve harvesting in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: The sural nerve is a sensory nerve that innervates the proximal part of the lateral aspect of the foot. The sural nerve is often harvested for nerve grafting. Sensory loss in the area supplied by the sural nerve could be expected, causing a lack of protective sensation and a potential risk of injury. The sensory outcome of sural nerve harvesting has not been documented in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensory deficit following sural nerve harvest in infants. METHODS: The authors conducted a controlled study. Evaluation and mapping of the sensory thresholds in…

Pressure pain threshold and pain tolerance in episodic tension-type headache do not depend on the presence of headache.

Pressure pain thresholds and responses to painful mechanical stimuli were obtained from 20 subjects with episodic tension-type headaches (TTH). Tender points in the temporalis and trapezius muscles were studied, along with two nontender points, one in the temporalis and one on the Achilles tendon. Two examinations were performed, one during and one without a headache, and results were compared. No significant differences were found in either variable for any tested points. The data demonstrate that the sensitivity level of these points does not differ based on the presence or absence of TTH. T

Measurement of olfactory threshold using an evoked potential technique.

A new device introducing brief pulses of odorised air synchronous with the inspiration of the test subject was developed. Responses to skatole were distinguishable as an evoked response by using the superimposition technique before averaging. The olfactory threshold measured by the chemosensory event-related potentials to olfactory stimulations according to our ascending method was found E-2 or E-1 and was equal to the detection olfactory threshold in each of the eight normal test subjects.

Perceptual learning in primary and secondary motion vision.

Specific improvements of perceptual capabilities with practise are thought to give some clues about cortical plasticity and the localisation of cortical processing. In the present study, perceptual learning is used as a paradigm to separate mechanisms underlying the perception of different classes of motion stimuli. Primary motion stimuli (phi-motion), are characterised by displacements of the luminance distribution. However, for secondary motion stimuli the movement is not accompanied by a corresponding luminance shift. Instead, moving objects are defined by their temporal frequency compositi
