Can a shoe-mounted IMU identify the effects of orthotics in ways comparable to gait laboratory measurements?

BACKGROUND: Footwear and orthotic research has traditionally been conducted within laboratories. With increasing prevalence of wearable sensors for foot and ankle biomechanics measurement, transitioning experiments into the real-world is realistic. However wearable systems must effectively detect the direction and magnitude of response to interventions to be considered for future usage. METHODS: RunScribe IMU was used simultaneously with motion capture, accelerometers, and force plates during straight-line walking. Three orthotics (A, B, C) were used to change lower limb biomechanics from a c

A Novel Smart Shoe Instrumented with Sensors for Quantifying Foot Placement and Clearance during Stair Negotiation.

Trips and slips are significant causal perturbations leading to falls on stairs, especially in older people. The risk of a trip caused by a toe or heel catch on the step edge increases when clearance is small and variable between steps. The risk of a slip increases if the proportion of the foot area in contact with the step is reduced and variable between steps. To assess fall risk, these measurements are typically taken in a gait lab using motion-capture optoelectronic systems. The aim of this work was to develop a novel smart shoe equipped with sensors to measure foot placement and foot clea

A systematic review of the effect of running shoes on running economy, performance and biomechanics: analysis by brand and model.

This systematic review aims to synthesise the effects of current shoe models in each shoe category and their specific features on running economy, performance and biomechanics. Electronic databases such as Web of Science, SPORTDiscuss, PubMed and Scopus were used to identify studies from 2015 to date. Due to the existing lack of consensus to define running shoes, only studies that specified the shoe brand and models used to assess their effect over runners with a certain level of fitness and training routine were included. Quality assessment of cross-sectional and intervention studies was cond…

Adding carbon fiber to shoe soles may not improve running economy: a muscle-level explanation.

In an attempt to improve their distance-running performance, many athletes race with carbon fiber plates embedded in their shoe soles. Accordingly, we sought to establish whether, and if so how, adding carbon fiber plates to shoes soles reduces athlete aerobic energy expenditure during running (improves running economy). We tested 15 athletes as they ran at 3.5 m/s in four footwear conditions that varied in shoe sole bending stiffness, modified by carbon fiber plates. For each condition, we quantified athlete aerobic energy expenditure and performed biomechanical analyses, which included the u…

Reverse-Shoe Wearing Method for Treating Toe-In Gait in Children Can Lead to Hallux Valgus.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the effect of 2 methods for treating toe-in gait in children (reverse-shoe wearing and orthopedic insoles) and to determine whether reverse-shoe wearing results in hallux valgus. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between July 2012 and July 2014, 337 children diagnosed with toe-in gait over 2 years were recruited. For 139 children, parents selected use of reverse-shoe wearing treatment (RS group) and for 198 children, parents selected orthopedic insoles treatment (OI group). There were 98 children in the RS group and 167 in the OI group who completed the 12-mo

Does Shoe Collar Height Influence Ankle Joint Kinematics and Kinetics in Sagittal Plane Maneuvers?

The Objective of the study is to investigate the effects of basketball shoes with different collar heights on ankle kinematics and kinetics and athletic performance in different sagittal plane maneuvers. Twelve participants who wore high-top and low-top basketball shoes (hereafter, HS and LS, respectively) performed a weight-bearing dorsiflexion (WB-DF) maneuver, drop jumps (DJs), and lay-up jumps (LJs). Their sagittal plane kinematics and ground reaction forces were recorded using the Vicon motion capture system and Kistler force plates simultaneously. Moreover, ankle dorsiflexion and plantar…

Comparing the efficacy of exercise, internal and external shoe modification in pes planus: A clinical and pedobarographic study.

Pes planus is a condition that can cause pain along the innerfoot due to the absence or abnormal depression of the longitudinal arch. There are few studies available that compare therapy modalities used in these patients. In our study, those treated with conservative therapies - internal and external shoe modifications and pes planus exercises - were compared clinically and pedobarographyically. 60 pes planus patients were included in the study. In the first group; internal modification was performed by placing a medial longitudinal arch support inside the shoe. In the second group, external s

Effects of ramp negotiation, paving type and shoe sole geometry on toe clearance in young adults.

Trips are a major cause of falls and result from involuntary contact of the foot with the ground during the swing phase of gait. Adequate toe clearance during swing is therefore crucial for safe locomotion. To date, little is known about the effects of environmental factors and footwear on toe clearance. This study reports on modulation of toe clearance and toe clearance variability in response to changes in ground inclination, paving type, and shoe sole geometry. Toe clearance and toe clearance variability for ten healthy young adults were calculated two-fold: a) for the commonly-used positio

Nail puncture wound through a rubber-soled shoe: a retrospective study of 96 adult patients.

Nail punctures through rubber-soled shoes expose the foot to the possibility of deep infection and foreign body retention. In this article, we describe characteristics of adult patients who sustained nail puncture wounds through a rubber-soled shoe and were treated at our institution from January 1, 2000, to January 8, 2008. Of the 96 patients, 36 (37.5%) were treated conservatively and 60 (62.5%) were treated surgically in the operating room. Of those treated surgically, 15 (25%) had a foreign body extracted during the operation. The operated group had a longer duration of time from injury to…

10 years' experience of patch testing with a shoe series in 230 patients: which allergens are important?

Over a 10-year period, 230 patients with foot dermatitis were patch tested to a shoe series of allergens. About 54 (23%) had relevant allergic positive reactions to one or more allergens. The commonest relevant allergens groups were, in order, chromate, medicaments, rubber chemicals, dyes and cosmetic constituents, with the most frequent individual allergens being chromate (4%), neomycin (3%), rubber chemicals (> 3%), paraphenylenediamine (2%) and tixocortyl pivolate (2%). Some allergens previously thought to be important, e.g. certain plastic and adhesive chemicals, did not show any positives

[The Heibronnen roll-off shoe. An improved forefoot strain reducing orthosis using biomechanical principles].

To reduce the strain on the middle and forefoot in postoperative and posttraumatic care, we developed a new shoe. It is applied as part of treatment following skeletal or soft tissue surgery in this region and in treatment of the diabetic foot (types I and II). Pedographically, we found the vertex of the roll-off process located at the base of the fifth metatarsal bone, meaning that the foot starts to roll-off at this point while walking. The movement was recorded by a pedobarograph bearing full weight and with the use of one crutch in comparison to the roll-off process in a regular shoe. Resu

Normal and pathological human gait analysis using miniature triaxial shoe-borne load cells.

Miniature triaxial shoe-borne load cells are used to analyze the normal and a below knee amputee's gait. The gait of an amputee is studied from first step on a temporary pylon to a final "normal" gait on a permanent prosthesis. The amputee's gait is compared to that of the normal subject. The load cells are an effective method of analyzing normal and abnormal gait. For an amputee, it is possible to identify misalignments from the output of the various load cells. This method may also be useful for identifying and correcting problems in the painful below knee stump. These load cells are further

Influence of Vamp Opening Configuration on Foot-Footwear Biomechanics: A Finite Element Analysis of Women's Low-Heeled Court Shoes.

Footwear geometry plays an important role in determining mechanical performance, plantar load distribution, comfort, and foot stability during gait. Understanding how constructive design parameters influence foot biomechanics is essential for developing footwear that improves comfort while reducing excessive mechanical loading. Although various finite element studies have investigated insole and outsole design, midsole materials, and plantar pressure redistribution, comparatively little attention has been paid to the influence of upper construction parameters, particularly vamp opening configu

Biomechanical insights into carbon plate geometry in running shoes in male runners: implications for sprint performance and ankle stability.

To date, limited evidence exists on how carbon plate geometry influences sprint biomechanics. This study investigated the biomechanical effects of different carbon plate configurations in running shoes on sprint performance and lower-limb stability. Forty trained male sprinters performed submaximal sprinting at a controlled speed of 7 m s-1 while wearing shoes equipped with either a full-length carbon plate (FC) or a Y-shaped carbon plate (YC). Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using a motion capture system and force platform. Outcome measures included spatiotemporal variables, joint k…

Technologically advanced running shoes reduce oxygen cost and cumulative tibial loading per kilometer in recreational female and male runners.

Technologically advanced running shoes (TARS) improve performance compared to classical running shoes (CRS). Improved race performance has been attributed to metabolic savings in male runners, but it remains unclear if these same benefits are experienced among females and in recreational runners. The mechanisms behind these benefits are still not fully understood despite the need for optimisation, and their influence on injury mechanisms has not been explored. Here we combined biomechanical, physiological, and modelling approaches to analyse joint mechanics, oxygen uptake, and tibial load in n…

Curved carbon plates inside running shoes modified foot and shank angular velocity improving mechanical efficiency at the ankle joint.

Recent technologically advanced running shoes have been designed with higher stack height and curved carbon plate-reinforced toe springs to enhance running performance. The purpose of this study was to examine how curved carbon-plate reinforcement modulated mechanical efficiency at the ankle joint during the running stance phase. We prepared two footwear conditions: Non and Carbon, both had a 3D-printed midsole (40-mm heel thickness). A full-length curved carbon plate was inserted along the toe spring in Carbon. The participants included 14 non-rearfoot long-distance athletes. They were requir…
