OBJECTIVE: To estimate the cost of a streptococcal tonsillitis episode from the data of a questionnaire.
SETTING: Five primary health centres in the west of Sweden.
PARTICIPANTS: 101 consecutive patients treated for streptococcal tonsillitis.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The cost estimation included costs for physician visit and drug, travel costs to and from the primary health centre, cost of lost production resulting from the patient's or the guardian's absence from work for physician visit or sick-leave, and cost of telephone consultation with a physician or nurse.

ECTR is an elegant minimally invasive operative treatment of CTS, providing a rapid rehabilitation without increasing the risk of complications. However, there is a significant learning curve and the cost of the operation is significantly higher than with conventional open technique. The effect of low-power laser therapy on acute ankle sprains was evaluated in a double-blind randomised clinical study consisting of 40 patients from the casualty ward. All patients received treatment until their ankle joint was painless. No statistically significant differences regarding discolouring, pain, oedema, and use of analgetics were observed between patients treated with laser and placebo. The patients treated with active laser had a significantly longer sick leave.

Oral versus intravenous antibiotic therapy of severe erysipelas was compared in a controlled trial of 60 patients. No clinical benefit of intravenous therapy was found, as evaluated by fever duration, hospital stay and sick leave. Untoward reactions were comparable between the groups. No difference in recurrence was found. The difference in administration time and drug cost was considerable. It is therefore suggested that erysipelas without complications should be treated orally.
