BACKGROUND Sarcomatoid carcinomas have long been reported as uncommon, highly aggressive, and fatal neoplasms. They have been found to originate from different organs, including, but not limited to, the female genital tract, head and neck, and, less commonly, the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the clinical presentation is highly variable, misleading practitioners, impeding early correct diagnosis, and delaying management. In fact, most patients present with symptoms related to distant metastases. Due to its rarity, no guidelines for treatment have been set, leaving practitioners powerle

The lack of consensus over the transition point for the end of the sigmoid and beginning of the rectum is a problem for the colorectal multidisciplinary team. In this review, we survey the wide number of landmarks for the rectosigmoid junction, and describe the theoretical and evidence-based strengths and weaknesses of each one. Without a reliable definition of the rectum, sigmoid and rectal cancers will be classified inconsistently. As the treatment strategies for sigmoid and rectal cancers are radically different, incorrect tumour localisation has a substantial impact on patient management,

We report a case of endocrine carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. A 71-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of constipation and bloody stool. Colonoscopy showed a mass lesion with irregular ulceration in the sigmoid colon. He was given a diagnosis of the poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the colon, and underwent sigmoidectomy with dissection of the lymph nodes. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations of the resected specimen revealed endocrine carcinoma. Endocrine carcinoma of the colon is rare, and the prognosis is very poor. We discuss this case with references.

The authors report a case of a patient with splenic metastasis with previous history of colorectal cancer. A 69-year-old woman underwent a left hemicolectomy for sigmoid colon cancer. The tumor was staged T3N0M0. Two years after the operation, there was an elevation of CEA and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a mass in the spleen, considered as an isolated metastasis. The patient underwent splenectomy. Histological diagnosis confirmed a metastatic adenocarcinoma from colorectal carcinoma. Patient was alive without neoplasic recurrence 5 years after splenectomy. Generally, splenic metasta

This report describes the case of a 34-year-old premenopausal woman in whom bilateral huge ovarian metastases were found immediately after initial surgery for sigmoid colon cancer. Both ovaries had been intact at the time of sigmoidectomy, but 2 months later, she complained of persistent vaginal bleeding, and large bilateral metastases were detected in both ovaries. Oophorectomy with intraperitoneal chemotherapy proved ineffective and the patient died 3 months later, after a second operation, from peritoneal dissemination. This case report serves to demonstrate the importance of searching for

Objectives: To analyze the influencing factors of No. 253 lymph node metastasis in descending colon cancer, sigmoid colon cancer, and rectal cancer, and to investigate the prognosis of No. 253 lymph node-positive patients by propensity score matching analysis. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on clinical data from patients with descending colon cancer, sigmoid colon cancer, rectosigmoid junction cancer, and rectal cancer who underwent surgery between January 2015 and December 2019 from the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, China-Japan Friendship Hospita

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, and typically present as discrete well-circumscribed but non-encapsulated tumor masses. In this report, we describe a case of colonic perforation caused by an unusual form of GIST. A 72-year-old Japanese woman presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain. Under the provisional diagnosis of sigmoid colon perforation, a laparoscopic sigmoidectomy was performed. Although the tumor mass was undetectable during the preoperative examination, a spindle cell lesion with a

A review of findings on flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS), colonoscopy and selected double-contrast barium enema (DCBE) radiographs from a group of 66 patients with rectal bleeding was performed to test the value of an algorithm in the detection of colonic cancers and polyps. In this algorithm the FS findings would direct patients either to colonoscopy or to a modified DCBE which focused attention on the colon proximal to the sigmoid. Only patients with neoplasms diagnosed by FS, or by MDCBE after negative FS, would proceed to colonoscopy. The study population contained four cancers, 11 polyps > 5 m

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of a paracolostomy hernia has been reported to be from 10% to 50%, with serious impairment of the quality of life and sometimes life-threatening morbidity in some cases. Most essential in avoiding the need for further treatment of an end-sigmoid colostomy is prevention of a parastomal hernia.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the effects of the extraperitoneal route for stoma creation to prevent parastomal hernia after laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection for rectal neoplasms.
DESIGN: This is a study of a retrospective cohort.
SETTING AND PATIENTS: Data on a total 37 cons

A woman in her 60s visited the gynecology department of our hospital with a chief complaint of lower abdominal pain and bloating. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI of the abdomen revealed an irregularly shaped 10 cm mass in contact with the uterus. Presence of a poorly contrast-enhanced area within the mass led to the diagnosis of uterine sarcoma, and surgical intervention was undertaken. A combined resection of the uterus and bilateral ovaries was performed; however, the tumor was found to be contiguous with the sigmoid mesentery rather than the uterus. Therefore, the sigmoid colon, including the

Smooth muscle neoplasms may occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, but are rare in hindgut derivatives. We report a case of colonic leiomyoma which had undergone cystic degeneration and presented as a huge abdominal mass. The diagnosis was aided preoperatively by C.T. scanning and the cyst shown subsequently to contain 13 litres of fluid. We believe this could be the largest reported cyst of this type.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the enthusiasm for laparoscopic surgery has been immense. In Denmark, laparoscopic surgery of the colon has been performed in only a few cases each year. In other countries, laparoscopic surgery foreign diseases of the colon is well established. Laparoscopic surgery for malignant diseases of the colon has been awaiting the results of studies of the oncological results. Now several randomised studies have demonstrated oncological results equal to or better than those of open surgery. The aim of this study was to show the initial experience of laparoscopic surgery

The symptoms of abdominal lymphangioma are unspecific and depend on site and size of the tumor. The most frequent symptoms consist of pain up to the clinical picture of a pseudo-appendicitis, digestive problems, palpable or even exterior visible tumors such as the pseudo-ascites. Often the diagnosis cannot be found by clinical examination or further investigation. As a differential diagnosis all mesenterial cysts as well as other cystic tumors which originate in an abdominal organ must be taken in account. In most cases possible complications make surgical intervention necessary through which

Introduction: Carcinosarcoma, also known as malignant mixed Mullerian tumor (MMMT) is a malignant biphasic neoplasm consisting of carcinomatous and malignant non-epithelial components of mesenchymal origin. MMMTs typically arise from the female genital tract in patients over 40 years old. Primary extragenital MMMTs are extremely rare with published literature totaling 40 reported cases. The primary peritoneal carcinosarcoma is an aggressive tumor as patients with this tumor have an average survival of 7.6 months. Surgical debulking is the mainstay of treatment for these tumors and systemic che
