BACKGROUND: In pediatric oncology, randomized clinical trials are an integral part of standard treatment. Because enrollment typically must occur before therapy begins, families receive trial information shortly after diagnosis and must provide consent within a brief time frame. The informed consent process therefore often takes place while parents are experiencing emotional stress, have limited medical knowledge, and have little opportunity to reflect on or discuss the available treatment options, as stipulated by good clinical practice.

Hepatoblastoma is the most common malignant liver tumor of childhood, with liver transplant and extended resection used as surgical treatments for locally advanced tumors. Although each approach has well-described post-operative complications, quality-of-life outcomes have not been described following the two interventions. Survival for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) has improved dramatically. Little is known about early family function, quality of life (QOL), or well-being/adjustment for parents of infants with HLHS. We present a case of a newborn female with multiple anomalies demonstrating that the causes of imprinting disorders rely not only on the parent-of-origin of the chromosomal aberrations, but also the scope of genes contained in the imprinted region.
