BACKGROUND: Ear canal skin is directly attached to bone or cartilage, and is also connected to the eardrum. Acute otitis externa is cellulitis of the ear canal skin and subdermal tissue associated with acute inflammation and variable edema. We characterized the microbiome of the normal ear canal and ear canal with otitis externa.
METHODS: In total, 28 samples (14 each from the ear canal skin of patients with acute otitis externa and normal healthy controls) were collected using swabs. DNA extraction and bacterial microbiome analysis via 16S rRNA gene sequencing were performed.
RESULTS: The d

Psoriasis is a chronic, multifactorial, inflammatory skin disease, increasingly recognized as a systemic disorder influenced by the gut-skin axis, which is a dynamic bidirectional communication between intestinal microbiome and cutaneous immune response. This narrative review explores the understanding of the gut-skin axis with the latest evidence on how gut dysbiosis occurs in psoriasis, characterized by reduced microbial diversity and its shifts, and how it contributes to pathogenesis and exacerbation of psoriasis. Notably, recent scientific literature evidence suggests that the alteration o

As an interface with the environment, the skin is a complex ecosystem colonized by many microorganisms that coexist in an established balance. The cutaneous microbiome inhibits colonization with pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and is a crucial component for function of the epidermal barrier. Moreover, crosstalk between commensals and the immune system is now recognized because microorganisms can modulate both innate and adaptive immune responses. Host-commensal interactions also have an effect on the developing immune system in infants and, subsequently, the occurrence of diseases, s

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental health disorder after childbirth. Although microbiome research in PPD has mainly focused on the gut, the role of skin microbiota remains unclear. We used Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess potential causal associations between skin microbiota and PPD. A bidirectional 2-sample MR analysis used genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. Genetic instruments for skin microbial features were obtained from a published skin microbiota GWAS, and PPD data were derived from 67,205 mothers (7604 cases, 59,601 controls). Instruments were sel

The human skin microbiome comprises diverse populations that differ temporally between body sites and individuals. The virome is a less studied component of the skin microbiome and the study of bacteriophages is required to increase knowledge of the modulation and stability of bacterial communities. Staphylococcus species are among the most abundant colonisers of skin and are associated with both health and disease yet the bacteriophages infecting the most abundant species on skin are less well studied. Here, we report the isolation and genome sequencing of 40 bacteriophages from human skin sw…

BACKGROUND: Porcine tonsils are lympho-epithelial tissues, colonized by numerous bacteria and viruses, that act as a reservoir for both host-specific pathogens and zoonotic pathogens with a high potential of transmission to humans. There are no existing studies describing the development of the tonsillar microbiome. We sequenced 16S rRNA genes from tonsillar samples of pigs to follow the development of the microbial communities from birth through weaning. Samples derived from sows were also analyzed to determine potential sources for the tonsil microbiome in piglets.
RESULTS: The composition

A male infant had the very fragile skin and easily formed bullas by rubbing and scratching from his birth. He was diagnosed with severe recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) due to the lack of type VII collagen by performing an immunofluorescence mapping method from a skin biopsy specimen of the patient's bulla. We analyzed the skin microbiome using next-generation sequencer. The species from the patient's skin revealed the dominance of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) similar to the reports from Austria and Chile severe RDEB patients, and these results are same as the pattern iso…

The skin presents a multifaceted microbiome, a balanced coexistence of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These resident microorganisms are fundamental in upholding skin health by both countering detrimental pathogens and working in tandem with the skin's immunity. Disruptions in this balance, known as dysbiosis, can lead to disorders like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Central to the skin's defense system are mast cells. These are strategically positioned within the skin layers, primed for rapid response to any potential foreign threats. Recent investigations have started to unravel the complex

INTRODUCTION: Social interactions shape the infant microbiome by providing opportunities for caregivers to spread bacteria through physical contact. With most research focused on the impact of maternal-infant contact on the infant gut microbiome, it is unclear how alloparents (i.e., caregivers other than the parents) influence the bacterial communities of infant body sites that are frequently contacted during bouts of caregiving, including the skin.
METHODS: To begin to understand how allocare may influence the diversity of the infant microbiome, detailed questionnaire data on infant-allopare

The recent and extensive study of the microbiome has provided an enormous amount of data concerning the type and possible functions of microorganisms present in the gut, airways, genital tract, and skin. These data showed interpersonal differences in the composition of the microbiome and these differences suggest a link between the microbiome, the immune modulation, and the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. This research is particularly relevant in paediatrics, since allergic diseases are constantly increasing and there is evidence in the paediatric age that shows that the composition of the

Rosacea is a common skin condition characterised by erythema, papules and pustules. Increasing evidence suggests that the gut-skin axis is implicated in the pathogenesis of rosacea. Sufficient evidence exists to support the notion that the gut microbiome plays a role in the inflammatory cutaneous response and there appear to be associations with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and Helicobacter pylori infection. A dysbiotic microbiome and an innate immune system dysregulation contribute to the pathophysiology of rosacea, and further exploration of their roles is warranted. Greater underst

Limited knowledge of bird microbiome in the all-body niche hinders our understanding of host-microbial relationships and animal health. Here, we characterized the microbial composition of the crested ibis from 13 body sites, representing the cloaca, oral, feather and skin habitats, and explored assembly mechanism structuring the bacterial community of the four habitats respectively. The bacterial community characteristics were distinct among the four habitats. The skin harboured the highest alpha diversity and most diverse functions, followed by feather, oral and cloaca. It is well established that different sites in healthy human skin are colonized by distinct microbial communities due to different physiological conditions. However, few studies have explored microbial heterogeneity between skin sites in diseased skin, such as atopic dermatitis (AD) lesions. To address this issue, we carried out deep analysis of the microbiome and transcriptome in the skin of a large cohort of AD patients and healthy volunteers, comparing two physiologically different sites: upper back and posterior thigh. Microbiome samples and biopsies were obtained from both lesional and no

BACKGROUND: Acne is the most prevalent skin disease globally, with a significant burden and limited therapeutic innovation. Although it has a multifactorial etiology, Cutibacterium acnes (C acnes) overgrowth is a key factor in driving inflammation in acne. Bacteriophages are a novel mechanism that can specifically target C acnes and are found in greater abundance on healthy skin compared to acne-prone skin.
OBJECTIVES: To study the safety and efficacy of phages and salicylic acid (SA) in acne, and to analyze their mode of action and effect on microbiome diversity.
METHODS: A randomized doubl
