Schnyder Corneal Dystrophy in an Adolescent: A Case Report With Multimodal Imaging.

Schnyder corneal dystrophy (SCD) is a rare, autosomal dominant, bilateral corneal dystrophy characterized by progressive deposition of cholesterol and phospholipids within the central corneal stroma. The condition is associated with pathogenic variants in the UBIAD1 gene, responsible for lipid metabolism. We report the case of a 17-year-old female presenting with progressive bilateral visual deterioration. Comprehensive ophthalmological examination, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, in vivo confocal microscopy, and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT), was performed. The exa

Successful Transition From Topical Ophthalmic Drops to Cream Formulation in the Management of Mild Allergic Conjunctivitis: A Case Report.

This case report highlights the successful transition from epinastine eye drops to a novel epinastine eyelid cream in managing mild allergic conjunctivitis. A 33-year-old Japanese female with mild allergic conjunctivitis, previously managed with 0.1% epinastine hydrochloride eye drops, requested an alternative formulation due to daily contact lens wear. Treatment was changed to a once-daily application of 0.5% epinastine hydrochloride eyelid cream. Clinical assessment and symptom evaluation were performed at baseline and after 28 days using slit-lamp examination and the Japanese Allergic Conju

From the diagnosis of infectious keratitis to discriminating fungal subtypes; a deep learning-based study.

Infectious keratitis (IK) is a major cause of corneal opacity. IK can be caused by a variety of microorganisms. Typically, fungal ulcers carry the worst prognosis. Fungal cases can be subdivided into filamentous and yeasts, which shows fundamental differences. Delays in diagnosis or initiation of treatment increase the risk of ocular complications. Currently, the diagnosis of IK is mainly based on slit-lamp examination and corneal scrapings. Notably, these diagnostic methods have their drawbacks, including experience-dependency, tissue damage, and time consumption. Artificial intelligence (AI)

The quantitative effect of 0.5% ketorolac tromethamine solution and 0.1% dexamethasone sodium phosphate solution on postsurgical blood-aqueous barrier.

Anterior chamber fluorophotometry was performed after the oral administration of fluorescein sodium in patients undergoing extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber intraocular lens insertion before and after surgery. The administration of 0.5% ketorolac tromethamine solution (ketorolac solution) eye drops before and after surgery decreased the breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier as compared with 0.1% dexamethasone sodium phosphate solution (dexamethasone solution) eye drops at each period, as measured by fluorophotometry. A single injection below Tenon's capsule of a short-ac

Subretinal fibrous membrane following argon laser photocoagulation of presumed histoplasmic maculopathy.

Following an initial improvement after argon laser slit-lamp photocoagulation of histoplasmic choroiditis, progressive visual loss occurred. Histopathological examination showed a dense fibrous membrane between Bruch's membrane and the sensory retina. There was no recurrence of hemorrhage or subretinal fluid. This case report provides an explanation for visual loss in the absence of recurrent inflammation or vascular leakage.

Vital staining properties of neutral red. Vital staining of cornea and conjunctiva.

Vital staining by instillation in the conjunctival sac of 1% neutral red in 54 normal and 153 differently affected eyes was studied by slit lamp examination. Of these, 134 eyes were after-stained by a mixture of 1% tetrazolium and 1/4% alcian blue and 73 eyes were after-stained by a mixture of 1% rose bengal and 1% fluorescein. Microscopy of a further 10 conjunctival scrapings and 40 mucous conjunctival threads disclosed neutral-red-stained inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells and the granulocytes. In the slit lamp the cornea and the conjunctiva were seen to be stained onl…

Clinical evaluation of primary peripheral cysts of the iris.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral primary cyst of the iris is an uncommon benign condition that may masquerade as a tumor of the ciliary body. Careful examination utilizing the slit lamp and gonioscopy is necessary to successfully differentiate the two. CONCLUSIONS: Given their uncommon occurrence and the importance of ruling out melanoma or other malignancies, this review is a guide in the evaluation and diagnosis of patients with this condition.

Corneal dose response from exposure to a Q-switched laser at a central wavelength of 1645 nm using a rabbit model.

SIGNIFICANCE: Laser safety studies of the eye are well documented for visible wavelength and continuous wave lasers. There are fewer experimental results for infrared wavelengths and pulsed lasers. AIM: We aim to fill the gap at 1645 nm for single nanosecond pulse duration exposures of rabbit cornea and determine the threshold radiant exposure to generate lesions 50% of the time (estimated dose ED 50 ). APPROACH: Images of the cornea during exposures were acquired using slit lamp microscopy and optical coherence tomography. A histological analysis helped provide dosimetry relationships wi…

Portable AI-powered scanning slit-light device for low-cost eye disease screening.

Accurate anterior-segment assessment is essential for detecting conditions such as primary angle-closure glaucoma, cataract, and keratoconus, yet current tools remain limited: slit-lamp biomicroscopy is qualitative and operator-dependent, whereas anterior segment OCT (AS-OCT) is costly and clinic-bound. We introduce an AI-integrated portable scanning slit-light device that delivers quantitative anterior-segment biometry at a material cost below USD 500. The system combines a motorized slit-scanning mechanism with synchronized imaging and an on-device deep-learning model (LWBNA-unet) to segment

Impact of conjunctival folds on central tear meniscus height.

PURPOSE: To analyze the effect of temporal and nasal lid-parallel conjunctival folds (LIPCOF) on the central tear meniscus height (TMH). METHODS: Tear meniscus height of 40 eyes of 20 subjects (15 female, median age: 39 years) was evaluated by the Tearscope Plus. Temporal and nasal LIPCOF scores were observed by slit lamp (SL) examination. The cross-sectional LIPCOF area (LA) was measured by a modified Scheimpflug camera. Tear meniscus was colored by fluorescein and TM fluorescence (TMF) was evaluated by SL using a 5-grade pictorial scale. Tear meniscus fluorescence was defined by its intensi…

Binasal visual field defects caused by temporal posterior subcapsular cataracts.

A 55-year-old female presented with binasal visual field defects and normal neuro-ophthalmic examination. Slit-lamp examination demonstrated posterior subcapsular cataracts that were located temporally in the visual axis. Due to the location of the nodal point in the eye, her visual field defect was contralateral to the opacity. Her visual field defects resolved after cataract surgery.
