Resonant realities: speculating infection in the postpandemic era.

This essay rethinks infection in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic by examining how its imaginaries are reconfigured in contemporary science fiction. While infection has conventionally been understood as a pathological threat to be controlled or eradicated, the pandemic asks us to reconceive it as a paradigmatic condition shaping bodily experience, social relations and ethical responsibility. This study conceptualises infection as a multilayered event that unsettles boundaries between self and other, inside and outside, and human and non-human. By re-examining the paradox of immunity and

The effect of social robot authority on epistemic vigilance in early childhood.

Social robots are increasingly deployed as tutors and learning partners, yet their authority cues may discourage children from questioning or verifying information. We investigated whether robot authority influences Chinese children's epistemic vigilance and which source of authority drives this effect. In Study 1 (N = 128, ages 4 and 6, Mage = 5.39 years, SD = 0.92, 66 girls and 62 boys), robots with high and low overall authority asserted that all aliens in a task had three eyes. Children's verification behaviors were assessed in terms of the number of times they checked the information, the

Psychosocial impact of narcolepsy.

Despite remarkable progress in our understanding of narcolepsy, the disease continues to cause the sufferer severe negative life effects. Before and after diagnosis, narcoleptics often experience unrelenting severe psychosocial stress. Child and adolescent narcoleptics report embarrassment, academic decline and feelings of loss of self-worth related to the symptoms of their disease. Personality characteristics may be adapted in order to avoid social situations that would precipitate cataplexy or draw attention to the patient's degree of somnolence. Misdiagnosis of these illnesses may result in

Social disablement among residents of hostels for the homeless in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the extent of social disablement among homeless people is very useful for policy-makers and mental health professionals who are involved in the delivery of community-based care. As there are few studies of this issue in Brazil or other developing countries, a cross-sectional study was carried out among homeless people from the Rio de Janeiro (RJ) metropolitan area. METHOD: Data were collected on a random sample of 330 residents in the five public hostels using the 21-items Social Behaviour Scale (SBS) and the Composite International Development Interview (CIDI). Mental disorder among refugees and the impact of persecution and exile: some findings from an out-patient population.

BACKGROUND: Refugees have long been considered at risk for mental disorder. We sought to characterise this risk in an out-patient refugee sample by analysing the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and dysfunction, and between symptoms and the socio-demographic background and stressors specific to this refugee sample. METHOD: A consecutive sample of 231 refugee patients referred to the psychiatric out-patient unit at the Psychosocial Centre for Refugees, University of Oslo, was examined with a semi-structured interview guide, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Hopkins Symptom Check-

Psychopathological features of anorectic patients who dropped out of inpatient treatment as assessed by the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa often requires inpatient treatment that includes psychotherapeutic intervention in addition to physical and nutritional management for severe low body weight. However, such patients sometimes terminate inpatient treatment prematurely because of resistance to treatment, poor motivation for treatment, unstable emotions, and problematic behaviors. In this study, the psychopathological factors related to the personality of anorexic patients that might predict discontinuation of inpatient treatment were investigated using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory

Is phantom tooth pain a deafferentation (neuropathic) syndrome? Part II: Psychosocial considerations.

The symptoms of phantom tooth pain are often considered to be of psychological origin by those unfamiliar with its clinical characteristics. Part of the problem is that phantom tooth pain is often confused with atypical facial pain. Extensive literature exists for the latter that suggests a psychological cause. Many studies of atypical facial pain, however, suffer from one or more of four methodologic problems. In the present study, 115 phantom tooth pain cases are compared with a contrast group of 151 facial pain cases and 137 nonpain controls on a variety of personality characteristics. Only

Experiences of social oppression among men who have sex with men in a cosmopolitan city in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In several African countries, men who have sex with men (MSM) are becoming visible, as a result of which they are now victims of human rights violations. This has a negative effect on their ability to access services targeted at human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention and care. The main objective of this study was to document the experiences of social oppression among MSM in Lagos State, Nigeria. METHODS: Simple random sampling was used to select three of the seven local government areas in Lagos State that had community centers. Snowball sampling was used to recruit 291 par

Prodromal symptoms and prevention of relapse in schizophrenia.

There has been little systematic study of early signs of relapse in schizophrenia. Determination of a prodromal symptom profile could facilitate early intervention before the development of a full-blown episode. A structured questionnaire was used to assess prodromal symptoms in two samples of schizophrenic patients, one of which included family informants. The symptoms most frequently mentioned as appearing or worsening before psychotic episodes were tenseness/nervousness, decreased appetite, trouble concentrating, difficulty sleeping, depression, and social withdrawal. Subsequent prospective

The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder on impairment in the UK military at the time of the Iraq war.

The aims of this study were to assess: (1) the relationship between PTSD and impairment, (2) whether there is a threshold in the association of PTSD score and impairment, and (3) whether any of the PTSD criteria are more strongly associated with impairment. We studied 10,069 service personnel from a representative sample of the British Armed Forces to assess the effects of the Iraq war. Participants completed the PTSD checklist (PCL), the general health questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), the alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT) and five questions to assess impairment. 78% of those with a P

A phenomenological-contextual, existential, and ethical perspective on emotional trauma.

After a brief overview of the author's phenomenological-contextualist psychoanalytic perspective, the paper traces the evolution of the author's conception of emotional trauma over the course of three decades, as it developed in concert with his efforts to grasp his own traumatized states and his studies of existential philosophy. The author illuminates two of trauma's essential features: (1) its context-embeddedness-painful or frightening affect becomes traumatic when it cannot find a context of emotional understanding in which it can be held and integrated, and (2) its existential significan

Digging Deeper into Precision/Personalized Medicine: Cracking the Sugar Code, the Third Alphabet of Life, and Sociomateriality of the Cell.

Precision/personalized medicine is a hot topic in health care. Often presented with the motto "the right drug, for the right patient, at the right dose, and the right time," precision medicine is a theory for rational therapeutics as well as practice to individualize health interventions (e.g., drugs, food, vaccines, medical devices, and exercise programs) using biomarkers. Yet, an alien visitor to planet Earth reading the contemporary textbooks on diagnostics might think precision medicine requires only two biomolecules omnipresent in the literature: nucleic acids (e.g., DNA) and proteins, kn

Filling the form: Expressive Therapies Continuum-guided treatment of narcissistic personality disorder.

Sara was a 65-year-old Caucasian woman who requested art therapy after the death of her partner. She had experienced incest by her father and verbal abuse by her mother until she left home at 21. Her life was characterized by broken relationships due to alienating anger outbursts and an interrupted work history; she met three criteria for narcissistic personality disorder. Sara initially was socially isolated and intellectualizing. She desired recognition but was fearful of exposure. The Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) theoretical framework, which consisted of a gradual progression from c
