Banter as transformative practice: linguistic play and joking relationships in a UK swimming club.

This article investigates the multiple interpretations and uses of banter as an inclusive and exclusionary practice amongst competitive youth swimmers in the Southeast of England. As a metacommunicative act, banter is a form of linguistic play that focuses on the ways in which the words are delivered, and the social relationships involved between those engaged in banter. Through an immersive "apprenticeship" within a competitive swimming club from 2018 to 2022, I was party to particular forms of English "humorous" communication and invitations to join in banter with coaches and swimmers. As co

Alcohol use and misuse within the military: a review.

Traditionally alcohol has been used by the military to cope with the intense stress of battle but also as a way of mediating the transition from the heightened experience of combat to routine safety. The use of alcohol has divided medical opinion. Some doctors viewed it as wholly harmful to both social and occupational function and to health, while others argued that alcohol had a specific role in lifting morale, aiding unit cohesion and protecting soldiers from adjustment disorders. Although alcoholism has always been identified as incompatible with military service, the effects of habitual h

Psychological and physical health effects of sexual assaults and nonsexual traumas among male and female United States Army soldiers.

Lifetime trauma history was assessed in a health study of active duty United States Army soldiers. Five hundred fifty-five male and 573 female soldiers in the sample were asked whether they had ever experienced 14 different potentially traumatic experiences, including sexual assaults, violent stressors to self, and terrifying events that occurred to others and were secondarily traumatic through exposure by gaining information or as a witness to the event. Most soldiers had experienced multiple traumas, and premilitary exposure to events was much more common than exposure to events after enteri

A group model for gay and lesbian clients with chronic mental illness.

This article examines the creation of a gay affirmative group model that focuses on the unique social, developmental, and psychoeducational needs of lesbian and gay clients who attend psychiatric day treatment. The author discusses how these clients' psychosocial potential can be maximized in a group that addresses issues related to their sexual orientation, including their double stigmatization as both mental patients and homosexuals. The following modifications of traditional group interventions are illustrated: (1) the tolerance of primitive interpersonal styles; (2) the encouragement of di

Caregiving for individuals with autism in forceful displacement crisis: experiences of refugees in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

This study examined the challenges faced by refugee parents caring for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Twenty-two parents participated in a mixed-methods study that included surveys and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed significant challenges, including reduced parental well-being, increased family strain, and limited access to specialized support services. Parental satisfaction with caregiving was correlated with the perceived severity of autism symptoms. Thematic analysis of interviews identified five key domains of challenges: in

Identification and classification of repeated whistle types from free-ranging rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis).

Acoustic communication is vital for marine mammals. Many delphinids rely on frequency-modulated tonal signals – known as whistles – used during social communication. Among these, individually distinctive “signature whistles” have been extensively studied in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) over the past 60 years. These stereotyped whistles convey individual identity and motivational information. Recent studies have identified similar stereotyped whistles in other delphinids, including a rehabilitated rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis). However, the function, occurrence, time–fre

A hybrid in-person and online group singing program for older adults with breathing limitations: A pilot mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Group singing (GS) programs have emerged as a promising option to address both the respiratory and psychological needs of patients with breathing limitations. No study has documented a hybrid delivery mode that simultaneously combines in-person and online modalities. This study aims to explore participants' experiences and the effects on respiratory control, quality of life, and social inclusion of a hybrid GS program that includes in-person and online groups. METHODS: Using a mixed-method convergent design, we recruited twenty individuals with breathing limitations. The GS prog

Experiment as Spectacle: The Traitors and the Cultural Afterlives of Cold War Social Psychology.

This article examines the first British season of The Traitors through the cultural and historiographic afterlives of Cold War social psychology. Rather than treating the series as a simple popularization of canonical experiments, it argues that reality television operationalizes and intensifies the dramatic logics of mid-twentieth-century behavioral science. The studies of Solomon Asch, Stanley Milgram, and Philip Zimbardo emerged from postwar anxieties about authoritarianism, social cohesion, and moral responsibility under conditions of surveillance and pressure. Although the empirical autho…

Childhood maltreatment associated with adolescent peer networks: Withdrawal, avoidance, and fragmentation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment can affect subsequent social relationships, including different facets of peer relationships. Yet, how prior maltreatment shapes adolescents' connections within school peer networks is unclear, despite the rich literature showing the importance of this structural aspect of social integration in adolescence. OBJECTIVES: This study examines how childhood physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and physical neglect predict adolescent social network structure as withdrawal, avoidance, and fragmentation among peers. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data from the

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Endemic: Maintaining Disease Transmission in At-Risk Urban Areas.

OBJECTIVES: A study of network relationships, geographic contiguity, and risk behavior was designed to test the hypothesis that all 3 are required to maintain endemicity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in at-risk urban communities. Specifically, a highly interactive network, close geographic proximity, and compound risk (multiple high-risk activities with multiple partners) would be required. METHODS: We enrolled 927 participants from two contiguous geographic areas in Atlanta, GA: a higher-risk area and lower-risk area, as measured by history of HIV reporting. We began by enrolling 30

Exploring the Role of Social Connection in Interventions With Military Veterans Diagnosed With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Systematic Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: It has been identified that military veterans have distinct experiences of loneliness and social isolation and, when comparing this community to other client groups with a PTSD diagnosis, veterans respond less favorably to treatment. However, the link between PTSD and loneliness for veterans remains insufficiently researched and it is unclear if there are effective interventions tackling this distinct experience of loneliness. AIMS: This systematic narrative review aimed to synthesize existing evidence incorporating elements of social connection, social isolation, and loneliness w
