Phenotypic expansion and structural analysis of the IQSEC2 p.Asp894Asn variant in a consanguineous Pashtun family.

X-linked Intellectual Disability (XLID) is one of the heterogenous neurodevelopmental disorders caused by a gene defect on the X chromosome. Clinical symptoms of ID are comprised of the disability of adapting to social environments and cognitive dysfunction which is often defined by having an IQ of less than 70. Whole exome sequencing revealed a hemizygous variant c.2680G > A (p.Asp894Asn) in IQSEC2 in the proband, further validated by Sanger sequencing. Subsequently, the three-dimensional structures of the wild and mutated type (Asp894Asn) IQSEC2 were deduced by structural bioinformatics appr

Male to female: the role transformation of transsexuals.

Twelve male transsexuals were found to have acquired a successtion of gender roles from childhood to adulthood-ambivalent, homosexual, drag queen, and transsexual. Thse roles constituted different stages of their livers during which they were clarifying their psychosocial gender role as transsexuals. Their transition through these roles suggests that these individuals are a subset of the transsexual phenomenon, for many--probably most--other transsexuals do not adopt these roles prior to becoming adult transsexuals. The social interaction of these transsexuals with significant others differed

Men on the move and the wives left behind: the impact of migration on family planning in Nepal.

Nepali migration is longstanding, and increased from 2.3% of the total population in 2001 to 7.2% in 2011. The estimated 1.92 million migrants are predominantly men. Consequently, 32% of married women have husbands working abroad. Social structures are complicated as many married women live with their in-laws who typically assume decision-making power, including access to health services. This study compares access to reproductive health services, fertility awareness, and decision-making power among a sample of married women aged 15-24 years (n = 1123) with migrant husbands (n = 485), and with

Nepotistic cooperation in non-human primate groups.

Darwin was struck by the many similarities between humans and other primates and believed that these similarities were the product of common ancestry. He would be even more impressed by the similarities if he had known what we have learned about primates over the last 50 years. Genetic kinship has emerged as the primary organizing force in the evolution of primate social organization and the patterning of social behaviour in non-human primate groups. There are pronounced nepotistic biases across the primate order, from tiny grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) that forage alone at night but

A life course perspective on Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome: women's experiences and negotiations of living with an underdeveloped uterus and vagina.

PURPOSE: Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of the uterus and upper part of the vagina. It is usually diagnosed during adolescence, and the present study investigates how women experience and negotiate to live with MRKH syndrome long-term. METHODS: From January to March 2021, eighteen Danish women with MRKH syndrome participated in semi-structured interviews via video conference. The mean time since diagnosis was 11.5 years. A thematic analysis using the life course framework as a theoretical approach was applied. RESULTS: The a

Body dysmorphic disorder: the distress of imagined ugliness.

OBJECTIVE: Body dysmorphic disorder, a preoccupation with an imagined defect in physical appearance, has a rich tradition in European psychiatry but has been largely neglected in the United States. Because this little-known disorder is probably more common than is generally realized and can have profound consequences, the author reviews its history, clinical features, and possible relationship to other psychiatric disorders. DATA COLLECTION: Data sources consisted of the MEDLINE database and relevant references in articles obtained from this search. Of 145 articles and books obtained, 100 wer

Childhood gender-typed behavior and emotional or peer problems: a prospective birth-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective and cross-sectional studies often report associations between childhood gender nonconformity and greater emotional and peer difficulties. This study used the ALSPAC birth cohort to investigate relationships between childhood gender-typed behavior and peer and emotional problems throughout childhood and adolescence. METHODS: A total of 11,192 participants had at least one measure of parent-rated gender-typed behavior in infancy; 7,049 participants had a measure of child-rated gender-typed behavior at 8.5 years. Separate linear mixed regression models were fitted to as

A bright side, facet analysis of histrionic personality disorder: the relationship between the HDS Colourful factor and the NEO-PI-R facets in a large adult sample.

This study looks at "bright-side," Big Five Personality trait correlates of a "dark-side" Personality Disorder, namely Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). More than 5000 British adults completed the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Personality Inventory-Revised (Costa & McCrae, 1985), which measures the Big Five Personality factors at the Domain (Super Factor) and the Facet (Factor) level, as well as the Hogan Development Survey (HDS; Hogan & Hogan, 2009), which has a measure of HPD, exclusively called "Colourful" in the HDS terminology. Correlation and regression results confirmed many of

Mental illness and religious change.

Over the last 20 years there has been a revival of interest in orthodox Judaism in Israel. In an area of Jerusalem with a large concentration of academies of study for 'baalei teshuva' (those who have undergone change to orthodox Judaism), it was noted that 12.6 per cent of referrals to the community mental health centre were newly religious. These referrals tended to have schizophrenia or severe personality disorders and were less likely than other referrals to have anxiety, depressive or adjustment disorders. Most of the newly religious referrals had psychiatric problems prior to becoming re

Comprehensive network model of exercise behavior among Chinese university students: analysis of personality, emotion, and motivation.

BACKGROUND: Many previous studies have explored the facilitators and barriers to exercise behavior. However, no study to date has systematically examined the interactions among psychological variables and their potential direct or indirect links to exercise behavior within an integrated model. This study employed a cross-sectional design with network analysis to investigate the complex relationships between personality traits, emotions, and motivations, identifying distal, proximal, and mediating factors associated with exercise behavior among Chinese university students. METHODS: A total of 6

Why low-dose aspirin persists in recurrent pregnancy loss without APS: cognitive bias and system design.

Low-dose aspirin (LDA) is widely prescribed for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) even when antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is absent, despite high-level evidence showing no improvement in live-birth rate in such cases. In Japan and elsewhere, this empirical use persists across fertility and obstetric settings, suggesting a behavioral and systemic rather than purely evidentiary problem. This commentary interprets the persistence of LDA through the lens of cognitive bias and institutional design. At the cognitive level, action bias-the instinct to intervene when outcomes are uncertain-provides a s

Alcohol binge drinking in adolescence and psychological profile: Can the preclinical model crack the chicken-or-egg question?

During adolescence, internal and external factors contribute to engaging with alcohol binge drinking (ABD), putting at risk the neurodevelopment of brain regions crucial for emotional control and stress coping. This research assessed the prevalence of ABD in late adolescent students of Southern Italy and characterized their psychological profile and drinking motives. Translational effects of alcohol binge drinking in the animal model were also studied. Seven hundred and fifty-nine high school students of both sexes (aged 18-20) were recruited. Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumpti

Measurement of the validity and reliability of the persian translation of the saint george respiratory questionnaire for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: One of the important tools in measuring the quality of life in patients having a chronic disease is using questionnaires in which the impact of disease and its different types of treatments on daily tasks and social activities are evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At first, the questionnaire was translated into Persian and some of the concepts were changed by the researchers. Next, it was back translated by a person living in an English-speaking area who was unaware of the subject. At the fourth stage, the concepts were revised by a group of 15 patients and then 55 patients filled

Surface immunoglobulin on B lymphocytes as a potential target for specific peptide ligands in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Built environment is an important social determinant of health, but nowadays local health authorities (LHAs) have lost their competences in the issuing of building permits, especially since a new legislation introduced the possibility of personal declaration of conformity. They are also usually excluded from the urban planning process. At the same time, in recent years construction of buildings has been developed with insufficient regard to environmental health requirements, proper exposure to sunlight and winds, comfort, building materials, consumption of resources, and waste production. An ecological momentary assessment study of predictors for alcohol outcomes in transgender and gender diverse youth.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study examined how gender minority stressors and resilience experienced by transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth relate to daily and momentary occurrences of alcohol use risk processes (e.g., alcohol craving, drinking motives, and distress), alcohol use, and alcohol-related harms. The feasibility of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) was evaluated. METHODS: Forty TGD youth (mean 22.42 years [SD = 3.03]; range 18-29) completed a baseline interview followed by 21 days of EMA. Daily morning surveys assessed stressors and resilience, alcohol risk processes, use a
