Beyond Recidivism: Hospital-Based Violence Intervention and Early Health and Social Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) are aimed at decreasing recurrent injury and improving the social determinants of health. We hypothesized that the HVIP intervention should be evaluated by how well it can address the immediate health and social needs of patients after injury. Our study sought to describe the experience of our nascent HVIP. STUDY DESIGN: Case management records of patients treated by the HVIP of a level 1 trauma center from July 1, 2017 to October 1, 2020 were reviewed. Inclusion criteria were as follows: age between 18 and 60 with injury mecha

Roles of social workers and community health extension workers in enhancing access to maternal and child health services: reflection on a Nigerian intervention.

Nigeria introduced Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs to improve access to skilled care in response to persistently poor health outcomes among women and children. While existing assessments often emphasize the role of healthcare workers, the contributions of social workers and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) remain largely overlooked. This study explores the roles played by social workers and CHEWs in enhancing access to MCH services through an intervention project in Anambra State, Nigeria. An exploratory qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with five social

Developing social interaction and understanding in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a groupwork intervention.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with social interaction and understanding lie at the heart of the communication disorder that characterises the autism spectrum. This study sought to improve social communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by means of a groupwork intervention focusing on social and emotional perspective-taking, conversation skills, and friendship skills. It also aimed to address some of the limitations of previous interventions, including a lack of generalisation to other settings, so as to maximise inclusion in the community. METHOD: A group of 46 high functi

Diversity in energy transition: a multi-case study on DIY solar energy in Germany.

The transition to renewable energy systems is not only a technological challenge but also a deeply social and cultural process with significant implications for intersectional equality. Citizen-led energy initiatives are often portrayed as ideal spaces for participatory engagement, yet they can reproduce exclusionary dynamics, particularly regarding gender-related injustices. With a particular focus on FLINTA*-persons this study examines how citizen-led, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) photovoltaic (PV) initiatives in Germany translate normative commitments to diversity and justice into everyday organiza

A Framework for Addressing Health Disparities in Adult Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction-Systematic Review and Neurogenic Bladder Research Group Recommendations.

The systematic review and workshop recommendations by the Neurogenic Bladder Research Group offer a comprehensive framework for evaluating health disparities in adult neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD). The study acknowledges the multifaceted nature of health, highlighting that medical care, though critical, is not the sole determinant of health outcomes. Social determinants of health significantly influence the disparities seen in NLUTD. This report calls for a shift in focus from traditional urologic care to a broader, more inclusive perspective that accounts for the complex

'Hiding the Label': 'Passing' as Drinkers and Reinforcing Drinking Norms Through no and Low Alcohol Consumption in Social Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the expansion of the No and Low (NoLo) alcohol market (drinks from 0.0% to 1.2% ABV) in the United Kingdom and other contexts, knowledge of how/why these products are used remains limited. This paper addresses gaps in understanding, exploring how NoLos are used by consumers to feel included and/or 'pass' as drinkers in social settings. METHODS: This paper presents data from a small-scale UK study involving 15 in-depth interviews with NoLo consumers. RESULTS: The paper identifies three key themes. 'Inclusion, blending in and drinking rituals' explores how NoLos supported

Alexithymia, a compounding factor for eating and social avoidance symptoms in anorexia nervosa.

Socio-affective difficulties, in particular difficulties in representing, communicating and feeling emotions, may play a critical role in anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of this longitudinal study was to explore the links between alexithymia and two types of difficulties in AN: eating symptoms and social avoidance. Sixty adolescent girls with AN were recruited following hospitalisation in a specialised department. They completed self-administered questionnaires of alexithymia (TAS-20), of central symptoms of the eating disorders (EDI), and of anxious and depressive affects (SCL-90). Anxiety and

SMEs as Agents of Social Cohesion: Opportunities, Challenges, and Conceptual Framework.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are widely acknowledged as key contributors to inclusive and sustainable development. However, their role as agents of social cohesion remains conceptually fragmented and insufficiently developed. This paper addresses this gap by proposing an integrated conceptual framework explaining how SMEs foster social cohesion through local embeddedness, employment practices, and stakeholder engagement. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from entrepreneurship, social capital, and corporate social responsibility, the study identifies key opportunities, including

Pedagogical intentionality in walking football: fostering sustained participation and development among older adults.

The growing population aging demands physical practices that promote health, inclusion, and autonomy. In this context, Walking Football (WF) emerges as an adapted sport for older adults, characterized by the absence of running and physical contact, creating a safe and inclusive environment. Although the physical, psychological, and social benefits of WF are well documented, less is known about how pedagogical intentionality is enacted in practice and how it supports sustained participation and development. Therefore, this study examined how pedagogical intentionality was enacted through pedago

Equitable access to cochlear implants: a perspective on social justice and international obligations.

Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent sensory conditions worldwide, affecting over 1.5 billion people and is one of the main causes of disability. For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, cochlear implants (CIs) are one of the most effective rehabilitation options as they can significantly improve speech comprehension, language development, quality of life and social inclusion. Despite their clinical value, however, access to CIs remains highly unequal between and within countries, with implantation rates disproportionately favoring wealthier nations and people with a higher s…

Factors Behind Contemporary Rape Myths in Europe: A Systematic Review.

Rape myths are social constructs, deeply rooted in European society. They play a role in maintaining false beliefs about sexual violence and are one of the main factors in sexual abuse behavior. In this review article, the authors focused on the factors influencing the perpetuation and spread of false beliefs regarding sexual violence, its victims, and perpetrators. The goal of the study is to achieve a more profound comprehension of the cultural and social dimensions linked to this occurrence. HIV/AIDS programming in the United States: considerations affecting transgender women and girls.

To be truly gender responsive, HIV/AIDS programming for women and girls also needs to be fully gender inclusive. Gender identity is not necessarily determined by one's sex assigned at birth and not everyone is only or always simply "male" or "female." Transgender women (transwomen) and girls are those individuals whose gender identity and/or expression do not align with the "male" sex they were assigned at birth. This definition is inclusive of a diverse population whose identities, language, communities, and behaviors may vary widely. However, based on recent increases in public health litera

Managing demand for social care among adults with intellectual disabilities: A systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Demand for formal social services support for adults with intellectual disabilities is increasing internationally. Initiatives which empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to improve their health, develop living skills or manage chronic illnesses may promote independence and reduce unnecessary dependency on social services. METHODS: A "preventative framework" to managing demand comprising several domains was developed from existing literature to guide the search strategy. RESULTS: Fourteen papers related to three domains in the predetermined preventative framework wer
