The influence of social networks in adoption of integrated health interventions: A qualitative study of fishermen in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Social networks play a vital role in influencing individual and collective health behaviors and facilitating the diffusion of health interventions. Fishing communities in sub-Saharan Africa face socio-cultural and occupational challenges such as low literacy rates and high mobility. However, their high social cohesion creates a unique social environment for spreading health interventions. We explored the role of social relationships in mediating health intervention adoption in these communities, to inform future intervention strategies. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory pheno

Associations between living arrangements and health-related quality of life of urban elderly people: a study from China.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for elderly men and women in three mutually exclusive living arrangements: living alone, living only with spouse, and non-empty-nesters. It also examined whether such living arrangements and other factors relating to social interaction have an independent influence on HRQOL after controlling for other variables. METHODS: The data were drawn from China's 4th National Household Health Survey (NHHS) conducted in 2008. The final sample included 9,711 urban elderly people of 60 years and above. The EQ-5D inventory was used

Intersectional cohort change: Disparities in mobility limitations among older Singaporeans.

Mobility is fundamental to independent living, but past research on physical function and mobility in older adults has not considered both intersectional social identities and cohort change in tandem. This paper utilizes data on mobility limitations from older adults in multi-ethnic Singapore to test whether cohort change varies simultaneously by gender and ethnicity. Panel data (n = 9334 person-years) collected over six years (2009-2015) were used to estimate aging vector models. Findings show that after adjusting for all covariates, Malay and Indian males in later-born cohorts have an increa

Traveling with blindness: A qualitative space-time approach to understanding visual impairment and urban mobility.

This paper draws from Hägerstrand's space-time framework to generate new insights on the everyday mobilities of individuals with visual impairments in the San Francisco Bay Area. While existing research on visual impairment and mobility emphasizes individual physical limitations resulting from vision loss or inaccessible public spaces, this article highlights and bridges both the behavioral and social processes that influence individual mobility. A qualitative analysis of sit-down and mobile interview data reveals that the space-time constraints of people with visual impairments are closely li

Clinical and psychosocial impact of limited mobility during the interstage period of two-stage revision arthroplasty for prosthetic joint infection: a state-of-the-art review.

BACKGROUND: Two-stage revision arthroplasty remains the gold-standard treatment in the United States for patients diagnosed with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the hip and knee. However, during treatment, patients have an extended interstage period between prosthesis removal and reimplantation which is frequently characterized by substantial reductions in mobility, prolonged rehabilitation, and a high incidence of medical and psychosocial complications. This review examines the physical, psychological, and social effects of immobility during the interstage period. METHODS: A comprehe

Disease-driven reduction in human mobility influences human-mosquito contacts and dengue transmission dynamics.

Heterogeneous exposure to mosquitoes determines an individual's contribution to vector-borne pathogen transmission. Particularly for dengue virus (DENV), there is a major difficulty in quantifying human-vector contacts due to the unknown coupled effect of key heterogeneities. To test the hypothesis that the reduction of human out-of-home mobility due to dengue illness will significantly influence population-level dynamics and the structure of DENV transmission chains, we extended an existing modeling framework to include social structure, disease-driven mobility reductions, and heterogeneous t

Body proportions for the facilitation of walking, running and flying: the case of partridges.

BACKGROUND: Predation is one of the most important natural selection forces. Prey species can optimize feeding behavior and escape from predators based on mobility conditioned by body proportions. With age, mobility capacity increases and individuals are more efficient in finding resources and safety (e.g., food and refuge). Birds' mobility is driven by the dimensions, of the head and torso, as well as the extremities and flight feathers. To assess the relationship between body traits and to understand how body proportions are organized in wild Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa), we used b

Understanding human mobility patterns under a public health emergency.

BACKGROUND: Understanding human mobility changes during epidemics is critical for predicting disease spread and planning interventions. However, capturing fine-scale dynamics is challenging. METHODS: This study analyzed high-resolution human mobility patterns in Shanghai, China, during the 2022 SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 outbreak using large-scale anonymized cellular signaling data. We investigated mobility shifts across five distinct epidemic phases (pre-outbreak, targeted interventions, citywide lockdown, targeted lifting, and reopening) stratified by age, sex, and travel purpose. Adoption of App-Based Peer Support by Canadian Health Care Providers: Mixed Methods Organizational Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent and critical need to support the mental health of health care providers, given high rates of stress and burnout. Although the issues are complex, digital access to information and support can help address the needs, as technology can facilitate on-demand links to private, customized resources, including peer support. Beyond Silence (McMaster University) is an evidence-informed mobile health platform co-designed with health care workers and grounded in prior evidence that mental health literacy and peer support can reduce stigma and facilitate earlier help-seeking

Strategies and limitations in app usage and human mobility.

Cognition has been found to constrain several aspects of human behaviour, such as the number of friends and the number of favourite places a person keeps stable over time. This limitation has been empirically defined in the physical and social spaces. But do people exhibit similar constraints in the digital space? We address this question through the analysis of pseudonymised mobility and mobile application (app) usage data of 400,000 individuals in a European country for six months. Despite the enormous heterogeneity of apps usage, we find that individuals exhibit a conserved capacity that li

Association and mediating pathways between intergenerational educational mobility and depressive symptoms: findings from high- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Education is an important determinant of health throughout the life course. However, less is understood about whether and how intergenerational educational mobility-comparing an individual's own and their parents' education-is associated with depressive symptoms among aging populations across diverse settings. This study examines this association and its mediating pathways. METHODS: Using data from six harmonized longitudinal aging studies: the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and its partner studies in England, European countries, South Korea, Mexico, and China, we conducted

Home modifications and disability outcomes: A longitudinal study of older adults living in England.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on the protective effect of housing modifications on disability outcomes among older adults. We examined whether external and internal housing modifications reduce the risk of a range of disability outcomes among older adults living in England. METHODS: We analysed adults aged 60 and over from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, initially recruited in 2002/03. The longitudinal sample consisted of 32,126 repeated observations from 10,459 individuals across 6 waves with an average follow-up of 11·3 years. Participants were asked if their homes had ext

Accessibility of sports facilities for persons with reduced mobility and assessment of their motivation for practice.

This study aims to create awareness, both within the scientific community and among providers of sports facilities, for individuals with impaired or reduced mobility, promoting the development of technical solutions that allow greater autonomy and social integration of people with disabilities. The purpose of this work is, on the one hand, to evaluate the accessibility of sports facilities for people with reduced mobility and, on the other hand, to investigate why this user group has such low rates of participation in sporting activities. Firstly, using the Portuguese norms and legislation tra

Children in Cambodia provide key design priorities for below-knee prostheses: Independence, functionality, comfort and cosmetic appearance.

Children with disabilities in low-resource environments (LREs) face major barriers to education, participation, and well-being. Assistive technologies like prostheses can help, but current solutions often fail to meet child-specific needs, particularly in LREs. This study engages pediatric prosthesis users in Cambodia to identify their unique user needs. This study used a novel interactive interview with card games and functional mobility assessment. While the card games and mobility assessment provided quantitative data, the interview responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. Six theme

The experience of transportation to visit a nursing home resident: A case study.

Maintaining social connections in the community can be accomplished through transportation access and opportunities. This includes relationships between family and residents in nursing homes. Previous research supports the relationship between transportation, social support, and visitation of residents in nursing homes (NHs), however no empirical research to date explores this relationship of family member transportation as a means to visit their loved one in this setting. Guided by a case study approach, a sample of 11 (N = 11) family members of residents in nursing homes across North Central
