The role of common factors in residential cognitive and interpersonal therapy for social phobia: a process-outcome study.

This study examined the role of common factors in residential cognitive therapy (RCT) and residential interpersonal therapy (RIPT) for social phobia. Eighty social phobic patients were randomized to 10 weeks of RCT or RIPT. Patients and their individual therapists completed process and suboutcome measures weekly. The ratings were examined using linear mixed models. Most patient-rated process variables showed U-shaped (quadratic) patterns over the course of treatment. Therapist-rated alliance increased linearly. Therapist-rated first-week alliance and empathy predicted improvement in social rol

Associations Between Social Determinants of Health and Outcomes of Chronic Medical Conditions.

Social determinants of health, such as food insecurity, can significantly impact patient welfare, potentially increasing the prevalence of chronic illnesses while hindering their management, as shown in previous data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This study aimed to investigate the association between food insecurity and other social determinants of health with hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and hypertension. To that end, self-reported data on food security from clinical encounters and biological data from medical records were collected. T

Food Price Changes, Household Food and Nutrition Security in Ethiopia: Evidence From Household Level Analysis Through a Gender Lens.

This study investigates the impact of food price changes on food security and diet quality in Ethiopia using recent Living Standard Measurement Surveys. Household-level food security and diet quality were assessed using the Household Diet Diversity Score, Food Insecurity Experience Scale, and proportion of food consumption expenditure. Employing a random effects panel regression and Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition, this study examined the differential effects of price changes across household types, guided by the Harvard gender analysis framework. The results of the study show that food prices si

Business continuity strategies for cyber defence: battling time and information overload.

Can the same numbers and letters which are the life blood of modern business and government computer systems be harnessed to protect computers from attack against known information security risks? For the past seven years, Foreign Service officers and technicians of the US Government have sought to maintain diplomatic operations in the face of rising cyber attacks and test the hypothesis that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As eight out of ten attacks leverage known computer security vulnerabilities or configuration setting weaknesses, a pound of cure would seem to be easy to

Assessment of work-related accidents associated with waste handling in Belo Horizonte (Brazil).

As more urban solid waste is generated, managing it becomes ever more challenging and the potential impacts on the environment and human health also become greater. Handling waste - including collection, treatment and final disposal - entails risks of work accidents. This article assesses the perception of waste management workers regarding work-related accidents in domestic and health service contexts in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. These perceptions are compared with national data from the Ministry of Social Security on accidents involving workers in solid waste management. A high proportion of a…

Mental health, social distress and political oppression: the case of the occupied Palestinian territory.

This paper presents a brief history of Palestinian mental health care, a discussion of the current status of mental health and health services in the occupied Palestinian territory, and a critique of the biomedical Western-led discourse as it relates to the mental health needs of Palestinians. Medicalising distress and providing psychological therapies for Palestinians offer little in the way of alleviating the underlying causes of ongoing collective trauma. This paper emphasises the importance of separating clinical responses to mental illness from the public health response to mass political

A mixed methods study exploring food insecurity and diet quality in households accessing food clubs in England.

BACKGROUND: Food clubs are a higher-agency food aid intervention that charge a small fee for a set number of items. Some incorporate longer-term solutions such as budgeting support and cooking skills. These are in place in England to help address inadequate reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. We used a convergent parallel mixed methods design to describe the food insecurity households accessing food clubs experience and to assess diet quality and wellbeing at the start and after at least three months of using food clubs in the South of England. METHODS: Participants accessing food

SOAR Online Course Increases Capacity for Assisting Individuals with Disabilities in the US.

For adults with disabilities who are experiencing homelessness, chances of being approved for social security disability benefits are very low, without assistance. Assisting with the Supplemental Security Income (SSI)/Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application process can be challenging for case managers who lack capacity and expertise. Training caseworkers to document disability and submit complete, high-quality applications using the SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery (SOAR) model improves efficiency and outcomes. Nationally, 65% of applications using the SOAR model are appr…

Spatiotemporal evolution and driving mechanisms of multiple scales ecological security in Shanxi Province from the perspective of service, risk and health.

Ecological security(ES) is pivotal to regional sustainable development, particularly under the high-quality development strategy for the Yellow River Basin. Current ES assessments often focus on single dimensions, failing to fully capture its systemic nature. As a typical resource-based province and a crucial ecological barrier within the Yellow River Basin, Shanxi Province exhibits both fragile ecological foundations and intense human development pressures. This study employs multi-source data from 2000 to 2023, including land use, temperature, and precipitation, to construct a three-dimensio

The essential and evolving nature of oncology social work: Accomplishments and impact, 2010-present.

This paper demonstrates the essential nature of oncology social work and the critical role that oncology social workers (OSWs) play in the achievement of high-quality cancer care that improves patient outcomes, contains cost, advances population health, reduces provider burn-out among healthcare providers, and does it in a manner that addresses disparities and achieves equity. To this end, this paper's purpose is two-fold: (1) to review and demonstrate OSW contributions to the advancement of comprehensive cancer care over the last 15 years, and (2) to consider next steps for the Association of

The experiences and perspectives of Japanese substitute caregivers and maltreated children: a cultural-developmental approach to child welfare practice.

This article describes the experiences and perspectives of child welfare workers and maltreated children living in Japanese state care. Japanese adults emphasize supporting children's emotional well-being and empowerment through developmentally and ecologically focused socialization strategies. One developmental goal articulated by caregivers of maltreated children has been for them to create their Ibasho--that is, a place where they feel peace, security, acceptance, and belonging. Adults support children's Ibasho creation, in part, through the socialization practice of mimamori--that is, watc

Re-Examining Age-Friendly Communities for Older People with Insecure Housing Histories.

In many countries, population aging and increasing rates of housing security among older people are unfolding simultaneously. While the World Health Organization's Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) framework is largely considered the leading framework for developing age-supportive communities, it does not adequately account for the ways in which a community may be inclusive, supportive, or age-friendly for older people with lived experience of housing insecurity. This paper began with a question: What would an age-friendly community look like for older people with experiences of housi
