Cross-cultural network structures of social anxiety, body dysmorphic, and major depressive disorder symptoms in individualistic vs. collectivistic societies: A comparison between American, German, and Japanese populations.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid, which may be influenced by cultural variables associated with individualism vs. collectivism with particular emphasis on shame. This study investigated the network structures comprising symptoms of SAD, BDD, MDD, and shame across three countries typically associated with either a high tendency of collectivism (Japan), a high tendency of individualism (USA), or in between (Germany). Participants included 319 Japanese, 440 US Americans, and 308 Germans from the general populati

Building and Testing of a Conceptual Model to Describe and Measure the Health of People as Affected by Post-traumatic Stress Disorder During Social Unrest: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Social unrest affects people's health and well-being. People's health-related needs during social unrest are concerns in both research and clinical practice. This study aimed to build and test a framework to describe and understand the health status and needs of people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during social unrest. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional survey. A total of 460 people who had experienced post-traumatic distress as a result of the social unrest in 2019 and 2020 were included. A conceptual model comprised four essential areas, namely posttraumatic

Predictors of resilience for people with spinal cord injury over two periods of COVID-19 social distancing restrictions: a 12-month longitudinal study using structural equation modelling.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is disproportionately impacting the health of people with disability. Resilience has remained an important health promoting characteristic during periods of social distancing restrictions. Factors promoting resilience for people with disability under the context of the pandemic remains poorly understood. Studies have yet to investigate evidence-based factors that promote resilience over multiple periods of restrictions for people with disability. METHODS: A longitudinal study developed via a collaborative partnership between peer-support w

Associations Between Environmental and Social Hazards, Self-Esteem, and Condom Use Self-Efficacy Among Northern and Indigenous Adolescents in Arctic Canada: Cross-Sectional Structural Equation Modeling Findings.

BackgroundWildfire exposure and co-occurring socio-environmental inequities may shape HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) vulnerabilities, yet this remains understudied in Canada's Northwest Territories (NWT). Guided by ecosocial theory, we examined associations between socio-environmental stressors and condom use self-efficacy (CUSE) among Northern and Indigenous adolescents.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey (2023-2024) with 290 adolescents (ages 13-18) across 12 NWT communities. Structural equation modeling examined associations among wildfire traumatic exposure severity,

Violence exposure across the life-course and allostatic load: Applying the structural life course modeling approach to examine violence temporal patterns and the promotive and protective role of adolescent social connectedness.

Exposure to violence is a major public health concern whose physiological consequences accumulate across the life-course in ways that are not yet fully understood. Although violence exposure has been linked to elevated allostatic load markers (AL), no study has directly compared whether developmental timing, cumulative burden or recency of exposure most strongly drives this relationship, nor whether adolescent social connectedness operates through promotive effects, protective effects, or both to mitigate these physiological consequences. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adol

Structural and social changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their impact on engagement in substance use disorder treatment services: a qualitative study among people with a recent history of injection drug use in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services are critical for achieving and maintaining recovery. There are limited data on how structural and social changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic impacted individual-level experiences with substance use disorder treatment-related services among community-based samples of people who inject drugs. METHODS: People with a recent history of injection drug use who were enrolled in the community-based AIDS Linked to the IntraVenous Experience study in Baltimore, Maryland participated in a one-time, semi-structured interview betwe

New Measures for Research on Men Who Have Sex with Men and for At-Risk Heterosexuals: Tools to Study Links Between Structural Interventions or Large-Scale Social Change and HIV Risk Behaviors, Service Use, and Infection.

Large-scale structural interventions and "Big Events" like revolutions, wars and major disasters can affect HIV transmission by changing the sizes of at-risk populations, making high-risk behaviors more or less likely, or changing contexts in which risk occurs. This paper describes new measures to investigate hypothesized pathways that could connect macro-social changes to subsequent HIV transmission. We developed a "menu" of novel scales and indexes on topics including norms about sex and drug injecting under different conditions, experiencing denial of dignity, agreement with cultural themes

Increased Stigma, and Physical and Sexual Violence Against Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Analyzing Social and Structural Barriers to HIV Testing and Coping Behaviors.

In sub-Saharan Africa, accessing HIV testing services is a significant challenge for men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). In this qualitative evidence synthesis, our aim is to understand social and structural barriers and how they hinder MSM's and TGW's access to HIV testing services in sub-Saharan African countries. We searched four selective databases (PubMed, Web of Science and CINAHL complemented with Google Scholar) for qualitative studies, published in English between January 2005 and December 2023, generated 1507 articles, of which 22 were included. Prevalence of HIV, syphilis, and assessment of the social and structural determinants of sexual risk behaviour and health service utilisation among MSM and transgender women in Terai highway districts of Nepal: findings based on an integrated biological and behavioural surveillance survey using respondent driven sampling.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people are disproportionately affected by HIV and sexually transmitted infections. MSM and transgender people in Nepal experience considerable discrimination and marginalisation, they are subject to abuse from legal authorities and suffer from mental health issues. These social and structural factors can lead to increased sexual risk behaviour, barriers to accessing health care and result in adverse health outcomes. This study aims to assess the prevalence of HIV and syphilis, and how individual and socio-structural factors influence

[Cognitive impairment in patients with multiple sclerosis].

Cognitive impairment (CI), along with physical disability, is the most important clinical manifestation of multiple sclerosis MS and is detected in 40-70% of patients. Present in all types and forms of MS, it has a significant negative impact on social adaptation, ability to work and daily activity. Most often, CI includes problems with information processing speed, memory, visual-spatial perception and regulatory functions. At the moment, there is no single theory explaining the pathogenesis of CI. It is believed to be associated with lesions in white and gray matter, which are not visible on

Association Between Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 and Social Cognition in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) seems to be involved in the neural circuits associated with social cognition and brain structure. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of IGF-1 levels with social cognition and brain structure in Huntington's disease (HD). METHODS: We evaluated social cognition using the Ekman test in 22 HD patients and 19 matched controls. Brain structure was assessed using standard volume-based voxel-based morphometry and surface-based cortical thickness pipeline. We analyzed the association of IGF-1 levels with social cognition and brain structure usi

"Social Anxiety Disorder Carved at its Joints": evidence for the taxonicity of social anxiety disorder.

Previous findings suggest that social anxiety disorder may be best characterized as having a dimensional latent structure (Kollman et al., 2006; Weeks et al., 2009). We attempted to extend previous taxometric investigations of social anxiety by examining the latent structure of social anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample comprised of social anxiety disorder patients (i.e., putative taxon members) and community residents/undergraduate respondents (i.e., putative complement class members). MAXEIG and MAMBAC were performed with indicator sets drawn from a self-report measure of social anxi

Using Social Networks and Model Simulations of Social Disruption to Identify Alternative Translocation Strategies for the Endangered Cooperative-Breeding Floreana Mockingbird.

(1) The importance of social structure and dominance hierarchies in cooperative-breeding species is well-documented, yet the inclusion of these processes in conservation translocation planning remains limited. Here, we empirically measured the social networks of three populations of the endangered Floreana Mockingbird, then used model simulations of different translocation scenarios to test the effects of social disruption on the social networks. (2) We used social network analysis and Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs) to characterise dominance hierarchies, group structure, and the conse…

Evidence of the Relationship between Social Vulnerability and the Spread of COVID-19 in Urban Spaces.

Modeling the social-spatial structure of urban spaces can facilitate the development of guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID- … tes a multidimensional model of social vulnerability. The application of this model towards people (social structure) and the environment where they live (spatial structure) is specified. Our model assumes the uniqueness of cities, and it is intended to be a broadly applicable model that can be extrapolated to other urban areas if pertinent revisions are made. Our …

Psychometric properties of the community social capital measure: evidence from the JAGES project.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to test the factor structure of the social capital scale used in the Japan Evaluation Gerontological Study (JAGES) considering individual and community level, measurement invariance between levels, internal consistency of dimensions, and nomological validity. This instrument was developed within a multilevel framework to explore the relationship between social capital and individual outcomes but has only been validated at the community level. METHOD: Sample included 194566 Japanese participants grouped in 1049 communities, aged 65 years and older. RESULTS: Analysi

The role of one's own social network position in learning new networks: Brokerage is associated with better network learning.

Navigating our complex social lives requires understanding where others sit in our social networks. Some individuals may be more attuned to the structure of their social world, and thus, better able to learn new social networks due to having accumulated accurate priors about social network structure in their own lives. Correspondingly, such individuals may acquire more advantageous positions in their own social networks. In four studies (Ntotal = 1,768), brokers (people who connect otherwise disparate people in their own networks) were especially good at learning and remembering new networks t

Everyday life for patients with schizophrenia and severely impaired social functioning.

BACKGROUND: A structure of everyday life creates routines and a sense of familiarity, which provides a recognizable basis for being and acting in the world. A structure of everyday life reduces stress, and daily stress has consistently been associated with higher levels of psychiatric symptoms. Little is known about how patients with schizophrenia and severe social impairment structure their lives. Thus, we aimed to explore the everyday lives of this group of patients, looking for structuring elements. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we included patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who w

Why is the self important in understanding and treating social phobia?

Current cognitive models of social phobia all agree that the self plays a key maintaining role in the disorder. However, all of these models use a relatively limited conceptualisation of the self. The author proposes a tripartite approach in which theories of the self are grouped into three broad categories: content, structure, and process. Content refers to knowledge and information about the self, structure to the way that information is organised, and process to the ways in which individuals attend to and regulate the self. Structure has been largely neglected to date, and the author outlin

Social anxiety in the general population: introducing abbreviated versions of SIAS and SPS.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by the experience of stress, discomfort and fear in social situations, and is associated with substantial personal and societal burden. Two questionnaires exist that assess the aspects of social anxiety, i.e. social interaction anxiety (SIAS) and social phobia (SPS). There is no agreement in literature on the dimensionality of social anxiety. Further, the length of a questionnaire may negatively affect response rates and participation at follow-up occasions. AIM: To explore the structure of social anxiety in the general population, and to examine ps
