When strengths may become vulnerabilities: Reconsidering the role of social support and psychological strengths among sexual assault survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Many women who experience child or adolescent sexual assault (CASA) are revictimized as adults. Although researchers have made considerable progress in understanding mechanisms that increase risk for adult revictimization, including CASA-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), few have explored factors that protect against this association. Drawing from the resilience portfolio model and prior research, this study examined perceived social support, gratitude, self-compassion, and optimism as potential strengths-based factors that may reduce revictimization risk. METHOD: Parti

Changes in healthcare utilization and costs following enrollment in an interprofessional primary care clinic designed to address clinical and social vulnerabilities.

Meeting the needs of patients with substance use disorders (SUDs), complex comorbidity, and social determinants of poor health is challenging in traditional primary care environments. Interprofessional primary care (IPC) can better address these needs and may reduce acute care utilization and healthcare costs. We used a retrospective cohort study design (n = 994 patients) to compare healthcare utilization and costs 2 years before and after patients enrolled in an IPC model in the US Veterans Health Administration. Patients were grouped based on histories of high emergency department (ED) use,

Ethanol consumption prior to cocaine self-administration reduced vulnerability to cocaine reinforcement in socially subordinate female and male monkeys.

RATIONALE: Although ethanol consumption is ubiquitous among individuals who use cocaine, most preclinical work investigating factors that contribute to the development of problematic cocaine use do not incorporate ethanol into their experimental designs. Given that only a subset of individuals who try cocaine go on to develop a cocaine use disorder (CUD) research is needed to identify factors, such as ethanol consumption, that may influence vulnerability to cocaine reinforcement. OBJECTIVES: Thus, this study aimed to determine how a history of ethanol self-administration and exposure immediat

Are healthcare workers particularly vulnerable to loneliness? The role of social relationships and mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Loneliness is a major public health issue with renewed prominence due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social restrictions. Healthcare workers (HCWs) may be at heightened risk, but research is lacking. We measured the prevalence of loneliness among HCWs during the pandemic in 2020 and examined pre-pandemic predictors and pandemic experiences associated with loneliness. HCWs at a designated COVID-19 hospital in Sydney, Australia completed an online survey examining health and well-being before and during the pandemic and changes to work, family and social experiences. Loneliness had nega

'Stressed, uncomfortable, vulnerable, neglected': a qualitative study of the psychological and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on UK frontline keyworkers.

OBJECTIVES: Non-healthcare keyworkers face distinct occupational vulnerabilities that have received little consideration within broader debates about 'essential' work and psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was therefore to explore the impact of the pandemic on the working lives and mental health and well-being of non-healthcare keyworkers in the UK. DESIGN: In-depth, qualitative interviews, analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis. SETTING: Telephone or video call interviews, conducted in the UK between September 2020 and January 2021. PARTICIPANT

Prior Social Contact and Mental Health Trajectories during COVID-19: Neighborhood Friendship Protects Vulnerable Older Adults.

Social networking protects mental health during a crisis. Prior contact with social organizations, friends, and non-friend neighbors may be associated with better trajectories of loneliness, depression and subjective memory during COVID-19. Regression analysis was conducted using longitudinal data from a representative sample of n = 3105 US adults aged ≥55 in April-October 2020. Latent profile analysis was also conducted. Prior contact with friends (B = -0.075, p < 0.001), neighbors (B = -0.048, p = 0.007), and social organizations (B = -0.073, p < 0.001) predicted for better mental health dur

Looking for capacities rather than vulnerabilities: The moderating effect of health assets on the associations between adverse social position and health.

To increase capacities and control over health, it is necessary to foster assets (i.e. factors enhancing abilities of individuals or communities). Acting as a buffer, assets build foundations for overcoming adverse conditions and improving health. However, little is known about the distribution of assets and their associations with social position and health. In this study, we documented the distribution of health assets and examined whether these assets moderate associations between adverse social position and self-reported health. A representative population-based cross-sectional survey of a

Identifying Patterns of Social and Economic Hardship Among Structurally Vulnerable Women: A Latent Class Analysis of HIV/STI Risk.

Women who are structurally vulnerable are at heightened risk for HIV/STIs. Identifying typologies of structural vulnerability that drive HIV/STI risk behavior is critical to understanding the nature of women's risk. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify exotic dancers (n = 117) into subgroups based on response patterns of four vulnerability indicators. Latent class regression models tested whether sex- and drug-related risk behavior differed by vulnerability subgroup. Prevalence of vulnerability indicators varied across housing instability (39%), financial insecurity (39%), limited

Situations of Vulnerability, Life Satisfaction, and Social Support of Older Women and Men: Results From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

Situations of vulnerability are associated with reduced life satisfaction. Although social support moderates the influence of situations of vulnerability, little is known about their associations. This study aimed to document situations of vulnerability and examine their association with life satisfaction among older adults, and the moderating effect of social support. Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data (n = 21,491; 73.4 ± 0.04) from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, stratified by sex. Confirmatory factor analysis identified a vulnerability variable from physiological, psycholo

An Exposome-Wide Interaction Study to Identify Hidden Environmental Factors Affecting Susceptible Populations: Application to Chemical-Social Vulnerability Interactions on Cognitive Function.

BACKGROUND: Exposome-wide association studies (ExWAS) systematically evaluate numerous environmental exposures, but typically focus on the mean effect, determining whether the association is statistically significant for the average individual. This approach may overlook environmental chemicals that specifically affect susceptible subpopulations. We conducted an exposome-wide interaction study (ExWIS) to identify environmental chemicals associated with cognitive function in the context of social vulnerability. METHODS: We examined associations between 147 biomarker-based chemicals and cogniti…

Association Between Social Vulnerability and Rates of HIV Diagnoses Among Black Adults, by Selected Characteristics and Region of Residence - United States, 2018.

During 2018, Black or African American (Black) persons accounted for 43% of all new diagnoses of HIV infection in the United States (1). The annual diagnosis rate (39.2 per 100,000 persons) among Black persons was four times the rate among all other racial/ethnic groups combined, indicating a profound disparity in HIV diagnoses (1,2). Community-level social and structural factors, such as social vulnerability, might help explain the higher rate of HIV diagnoses among Black persons. Social vulnerability refers to the potential negative health effects on communities caused by external stresses (…

Hospital Readmission in Stroke Survivors in Social Vulnerability: Predictive Modeling with Machine Learning from the Perspective of the Chronic Conditions Care Model.

Hospital readmission among stroke survivors is frequent, especially in contexts of social vulnerability, compromising recovery and overburdening health services. This study aimed to develop a predictive model of hospital readmission among socially vulnerable stroke survivors, based on the Chronic Conditions Care Model (CCCM). Machine learning algorithms were applied, specifically decision tree and logistic regression, with data split into training (70% and 80%) and testing (30% and 20%) sets. Analyses were conducted using Python, with accuracy evaluated through ROC curves, AUC, and the confusi…

Exposure to user-generated e-cigarette content on social media associated with greater vulnerability to e-cigarette use among youth non-users.

INTRODUCTION: Social media are important venues for youth's exposure to e-cigarette content. This study examined how exposure to user-generated e-cigarette content (i.e., content created and shared by individual social media users) is associated with vulnerabilities to e-cigarette use among youth non-users. METHODS: We pooled data from the 2021 and 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey. Youth who have never used e-cigarettes were included. Weighted linear and logistic regressions were conducted to examine how exposure to user-generated e-cigarette content (from real-life friends, online-only fri
