Somatosensory deficits after ischaemic stroke are common and can occur in patients with lesions in the anterior parietal cortex and subcortical nuclei. It is less clear to what extent damage to white matter tracts within the somatosensory system may contribute to somatosensory deficits after stroke. We compared the roles of cortical damage and disruption of subcortical white matter tracts as correlates of somatosensory deficit after ischaemic stroke. Clinical and imaging data were assessed in incident stroke patients. Somatosensory deficits were measured using a standardized somatosensory test

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a severe neuropathic pain, which has an electric shock-like characteristic. There are some common t … nglion, (3) PAG (periaqueductal gray in the brainstem), (4) thalamus, (5) motor cortex (M1) and (6) somatosensory cortex (S1). Each of these components is represented by a modified Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) model. The modification of the HH model was done based on some neurological facts of pain sodium channels. The input of the model involves any stimuli to the 'trigeminal …

In brain injury rehabilitation, passive movement exercises are frequently used to maintain or improve mobility and range of motion. They can also induce beneficial and sustained neuroplastic changes. Neuroimaging studies have revealed that passive movements without motor commands activate not only the primary somatosensory cortex but also the primary motor cortex, supplementary motor area, and posterior parietal cortex as well as the secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) in healthy subjects. Repetitive passive movement has also been reported to induce increases or decreases in cortical excitabil…

We studied cortical activation patterns by functional MRI in a patient who received bilateral hand transplantation after amputation 6 years ago. In the early post-operative period, the patient who had had the hand transplantation revealed strong activation of a higher motor area, only weak activation of the primary sensorimotor motor cortex and no activation of the primary somatosensory cortex. At one-year follow-up, a small increase in primary sensorimotor motor cortex activation was observed. Activation of the primary somatosensory cortex was only seen at the 2-year follow-up. Transplantatio…

The polysialylated, embryonic form of the neuronal cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) is known to participate in a whole series of synaptic rearrangements even in adult animals. The possible role of this molecule in neuroplastic changes of the adult rat somatosensory cortex induced by unilateral transection of the infraorbital branch of the trigeminal nerve was studied with PSA-NCAM immunostaining at light microscopic level. Two- and three-month-old CFY albino rats were sacrificied on days 1, 4, 6, 14 and 21 following operation and PSA-NCAM immunoreaction was examined at three levels of the vib…

In the present study, we used microelectrode recordings of multiunit responses to evaluate patterns of the reactivation of somatosensory cortex after sensory loss produced by spinal cord lesions in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). These New World monkeys have become a popular model in studies of cortical organization and function. Primary somatosensory cortex and adjoining somatosensory areas can become extensively deactivated by lesions of somatosensory afferents as they ascend in the dorsal columns of the cervical spinal cord. Six to 7 weeks after complete lesions of the cuneate fas…

Lesion studies show that a wide range of integrative sensorimotor functions can be selectively disturbed in patients with parietal lobe damage. Lesions restricted to the somatosensory representations on the anterior parietal lobe produce somatosensory deficits that resemble deafferentated states, including the secondary effects on motor control. Slightly more posterior lesions often are associated with impairment of more complex synthetic somatosensory functions similar to those observed after dorsal column lesions. Damage of the posterior parietal lobe can selectively interfere with virtually

Exploiting these novel neuroscientific insights, we developed-and provide a proof of concept for-basic BCI communication by showing that binary (yes/no) answers encoded by somatosensory imagery can be decoded with high accuracy in simulated re …

We investigated polysynaptic cortical pathways linking primary to multimodal sensory association areas in mice using transcranial flavoprotein imaging combined with sequential application of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES). Stimulation of primary visual cortex (V1) elicited activity in lateral and medial areas of secondary visual cortices (V2), which were reciprocally connected. Stimulation of V2 areas elicited activity in area 2. Similarly, corticocortical pathways from primary somatosensory cortex (S1) through the corresponding secondary somatosensory areas (S2) to area 2 were obse…

INTRODUCTION: The projection of the human male urogenital system onto the paracentral lobule has not previously been mapped comprehensively.
AIM: To map specific urogenital structures onto the primary somatosensory cortex toward a better understanding of sexual response in men.
METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we mapped primary somatosensory cortical responses to self-stimulation of the penis shaft, glans, testicles, scrotum, rectum, urethra, prostate, perineum, and nipple. We further compared neural response with erotic and prosaic touch of the penile shaft.

The Fragile-X mental retardation syndrome is the leading form of inherited mental retardation. Dendritic analysis in a mouse model (FraX) found abnormal pruning in somatosensory cortex. To further characterize dendritic abnormalities and assess their occurrence in other brain regions, we examined mitral cells in FraX mice olfactory bulbs. FraX mice exhibited dendritic abnormalities consistent with somatosensory cortex, suggesting that deficient pruning is found in multiple brain regions.

Braille reading depends on remarkable adaptations that connect the somatosensory system to language. We hypothesized that the pattern of cortical activations in blind individuals reading Braille would reflect these adaptations. Activations in visual (occipital-temporal), frontal-language, and somatosensory cortex in blind individuals reading Braille were examined for evidence of differences relative to previously reported studies of sighted subjects reading print or receiving tactile stimulation. Nine congenitally blind and seven late-onset blind subjects were studied with fMRI as they covertl…

The aim of this article was to give an overview of the current knowledge of supraspinal pain mechanisms derived from neuroimaging studies, and to present data related to chronic orofacial pain disorders. The available studies implied that the anterior cingulate cortex plays a role in the emotional-affective component of pain, as well as in pain-related attention and anxiety. The somatosensory cortices may be involved in encoding spatial, temporal, and intensity aspects of noxious input. The insula may mediate both affective and sensory-discriminative aspects of the pain experience. The thalamu
