Medical Considerations in High-Risk Maritime Operations: A Narrative Review.

Maritime operations conducted by military Special Operations Forces and civilian special weapons and tactics (SWAT) units present unique medical challenges. These missions often occur in unpredictable environments, far from immediate medical resources and with exposure to waterborne threats. This article examines the medical aspects critical to maritime operations, including hypothermia management, trauma care in confined and moving spaces, management of drowning and respiratory issues, and specialized training for maritime-specific injuries. A narrative review of literature from 2005-2024 was

[Medical and biological aspects of artificial gravity: animal studies].

In the review there analyzed the results of ground-based studies of rotation effects (at a gravity value near 1 g) on the animals, the experimental findings to determine a minimum effective value of artificial gravity as well as the data of biosatellite experiments. The major trends of animal studies in the artificial gravity area is presented.

European vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 4. Thresholds of perception of whole-body linear oscillation.

Thresholds for the detection of linear oscillatory motion at 0.3 Hz in the X, Y and Z body axes were determined during the flight of Spacelab-1 and on the ground pre- and post-flight, using the method of limits with a single staircase procedure. Pre-flight, Z axis thresholds (mean 0.077 ms-2) were significantly higher than X and Y thresholds (mean 0.029 ms-2). Measures obtained on three crew members in-flight exhibited thresholds greater, by a factor of 1.5-4.3, than those obtained pre-flight. Post-flight, two crew members had significantly elevated X and Y axis thresholds whereas the other tw

Effects of five days of bed rest with intermittent centrifugation on neurovestibular function.

OBJECTIVES: We tested whether intermittent short-radius centrifugation was effective for mitigating alteration in balance and gait following bed rest. METHODS: Ten male subjects were exposed to 5 days of 6° head-down tilt bed rest with: (a) no countermeasure; (b) daily 1-g centrifugation for a continuous 30-min period; and (c) daily 1-g centrifugation for six periods of 5 min. During and after the bed rest, subjects were asked to scale the severity of neurovestibular symptoms that followed centrifugation or 80° head-up tilt. Following the bed rest, equilibrium scores were derived from anterio

Effect of daily linear acceleration training on the hypergravity-induced vomiting response in house musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

The effects of repeated linear acceleration training and the antimotion sickness drug, promethazine, on hypergravity-induced motion sickness were examined in musk shrew (Suncus murinus), which is known to show a vomiting response to motion stimulation. Animals were assigned into five groups: vestibular intact, untreated animals (Sham), vestibular lesioned (VL) animals, vestibular intact animals with promethazine hydrochloride administered as daily drinking water (Prom), vestibular intact animals who underwent horizontal linear accelerator motion training (Train), and vestibular intact animals

Correcting geometric distortions in stereoscopic 3D imaging.

Motion in a distorted virtual 3D space may cause visually induced motion sickness. Geometric distortions in stereoscopic 3D can result from mismatches among image capture, display, and viewing parameters. Three pairs of potential mismatches are considered, including 1) camera separation vs. eye separation, 2) camera field of view (FOV) vs. screen FOV, and 3) camera convergence distance (i.e., distance from the cameras to the point where the convergence axes intersect) vs. screen distance from the observer. The effect of the viewer's head positions (i.e., head lateral offset from the screen cen

The kidney, volume homeostasis and osmoregulation in space: current perspective and knowledge gaps.

Although we have sent humans into space for more than 50 years crucial questions regarding kidney physiology, volume regulation and osmoregulation remain unanswered. The complex interactions between the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the sympathetic nervous system, osmoregulatory responses, glomerular function, tubular function, and environmental factors such as sodium and water intake, motion sickness and ambient temperature make it difficult to establish the exact effect of microgravity and the subsequent fluid shifts and muscle mass loss on these parameters. Unfortunately, not all re

Influence of microgravity on plasma levels of gastroenteropancreatic peptides: a case study.

BACKGROUND: No data are available about the short- or long-term influences of microgravity in space on the release of gastroenteropancreatic peptides, although these peptides are involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal functions. METHODS: Fasting plasma samples were gained during the EUROMIR-94 mission from a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut who experienced no signs of space motion sickness in orbit. Plasma concentrations of nine gastroenteropancreatic peptides were measured with sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays. RESULTS: Fasting plasma levels of motilin, pancreatic polyp…

Thresholds for human perception of roll tilt motion: patterns of variability based on visual, vestibular, and mixed cues.

HYPOTHESIS: Visual and vestibular cues provide complementary information about spatial orientation. BACKGROUND: A previous study we performed showed that visual and vestibular cues are fused when the brain judges the roll-tilt direction. However, it was unclear if the motion perception threshold measured in visual-vestibular conditions will be better than visual or vestibular thresholds at high frequencies. METHODS: An innovative method of vestibular evaluation, the measurement of vestibular thresholds, was used. We used a Moog mobile platform with dedicated software. Four subjects were test

The prevention of motion sickness in orbital flight.

A question has arisen whether zero gravity qualifies as just another "motion environment" in which motion sickness may be elicited, or if one or more undetermined etiological factors are present which render such terms as "motion environment" and "motion sickness" inappropriate. The question is of more than academic interest for the reason that in the forthcoming Shuttle Program we have either one problem or two: one if we are concerned solely with prevention, but two if we must tackle the problem of covert etiological factors as well. This problem points up the need to define motion sickness

Analogy between training for dancers and problems of adjustment to microgravity: an evaluation of the subjective vertical in dancers.

"Moderne dance" (as opposed to a more academic or classical dance form) uses techniques from kinesiology, anatomy and improvization which are adapted to a cultural, technological and political environment. The function of a choreographic system is to take and give a measure of the world. This includes, with the present tendency of the evolution of culture, a new "naturalism" which seeks the secrets of the body. Dance movements express in terms of space the dimension fo the infinite. It gives somehow the measure of a world within which everything is relative. Except for the speed of light, time

Promethazine affects autonomic cardiovascular mechanisms minimally.

Promethazine hydrochloride, Phenergan, is a phenothiazine derivative with antihistaminic (H1), sedative, antiemetic, anticholinergic, and antimotion sickness properties. These properties have made promethazine a candidate for use in environments such as microgravity, which provoke emesis and motion sickness. Recently, we evaluated carotid baroreceptor-cardiac reflex responses during two Space Shuttle missions 18 to 20 hr after the 50 mg intramuscular administration of promethazine. Because the effects of promethazine on autonomic cardiovascular mechanisms in general and baroreflex function in
