Fatal and Non-Fatal Heroin-Related Overdoses: Circumstances and Patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Heroin overdose is a leading cause of mortality among drug users. This paper aims to identify individual and contextual factors associated with lethal and non-lethal heroin-related overdoses on the basis of case reports and semi-structured proxy interviews. Typical patterns within these cases are determined by means of cluster analysis. METHODS: Within the CaRe (Case Reports of heroin-related overdoses) study, case reports (100 proxy reports of overdose events from 36 different facilities) were gathered and evaluated as part of a nationwide survey of experts conducted in Germany

Spatiotemporal variation in travel regularity through transit user profiling.

New smart card datasets are providing new opportunities to explore travel behaviour in much greater depth than anything accomplished hitherto. Part of this quest involves measuring the great array of regular patterns within such data and explaining these relative to less regular patterns which have often been treated in the past as noise. Here we use a simple method called DBSCAN to identify clusters of travel events associated with particular individuals whose behaviour over space and time is captured by smart card data. Our dataset is a sequence of three months of data recording when and whe

Spatio-temporal epidemiology of hand, foot and mouth disease in Liaocheng City, North China.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has posed a notable threat to public health and become a public health priority in China. This study was based on the reported cases of HFMD between 2007 and 2011. A total of 34,176 HFMD cases were geo-coded at town level (n=134). Firstly, a descriptive analysis was conducted to evaluate the epidemic characteristics of HFMD. Then, the Kulldorff scan statistic based on a discrete Poisson model was used to detect spatial-temporal clusters. Spatial distribution of HFMD in Liaocheng City, China from 2007 to 2011 was mapped at town level in the aspects of crude i

Comparative (1)H NMR metabolomic urinalysis of people diagnosed with Balkan endemic nephropathy, and healthy subjects, in Romania and Bulgaria: a pilot study.

(1)H NMR spectroscopy of urine has been applied to exploring metabolomic differences between people diagnosed with Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), and treated by haemodialysis, and those without overt renal disease in Romania and Bulgaria. Convenience sampling was made from patients receiving haemodialysis in hospital and healthy controls in their village. Principal component analysis clustered healthy controls from both countries together. Bulgarian BEN patients clustered separately from controls, though in the same space. However, Romanian BEN patients not only also clustered away from con

The spread of cholera in western Democratic Republic of the Congo is not unidirectional from East-West: a spatiotemporal analysis, 1973-2018.

BACKGROUND: Cholera outbreaks in western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are thought to be primarily the result of westward spread of … observed from neighboring countries, such as Angola, to non-endemic provinces of southwestern DRC. Space-time clustering analyses sequentially detected clusters of cholera cases from southwestern DRC to the northern provinces, demonstrating a downstream-to-upstream spread along the Congo River. CONCLUSIONS: The spread of cholera in western DRC is not one-sided. There …

Spatial and temporal emergence pattern of Lyme disease in Virginia.

The emergence of infectious diseases over the past several decades has highlighted the need to better understand epidemics and prepare for the spread of diseases into new areas. As these diseases expand their geographic range, cases are recorded at different geographic locations over time, making the analysis and prediction of this expansion complicated. In this study, we analyze spatial patterns of the disease using a statistical smoothing analysis based on areal (census tract level) count data of Lyme disease cases in Virginia from 1998 to 2011. We also use space and space-time scan statisti

[Parkinson's disease diagnosis based on local statistics of speech signal in time-frequency domain].

For speech detection in Parkinson's patients, we proposed a method based on time-frequency domain gradient statistics to analyze speech disorders of Parkinson's patients. In this method, speech signal was first converted to time-frequency domain (time-frequency representation). In the process, the speech signal was divided into frames. Through calculation, each frame was Fourier transformed to obtain the energy spectrum, which was mapped to the image space for visualization. Secondly, deviations values of each energy data on time axis and frequency axis was counted. According to deviations val

Incorporating retrospective clustering into a prospective Cusum methodology for anthrax: evaluating the effects of disease expectation.

We analysed livestock anthrax in Kazakhstan from 1960-2006, using a prospective CUSUM to examine the affects of expectation on the detection of spatio-temporal clusters. Three methods for deriving baselines were used for CUSUM; a standard z-score, AVG, a spatially-weighted z-score derived from Local Moran's I, LISA, and a moving-window average, MWA. LISA and AVG elicited alarm signals in the second year that did not return below threshold during the 47-year period, while MWA signaled an alarm at year four and relented at year fifteen. The number of spatial clusters elicited varied: LISA n=16,

Conditional predictive inference for online surveillance of spatial disease incidence.

This paper deals with the development of statistical methodology for timely detection of incident disease clusters in space and time. The increasing availability of data on both the time and the location of events enables the construction of multivariate surveillance techniques, which may enhance the ability to detect localized clusters of disease relative to the surveillance of the overall count of disease cases across the entire study region. We introduce the surveillance conditional predictive ordinate as a general Bayesian model-based surveillance technique that allows us to detect small a

The latent period of Burkitt's lymphoma: the evidence from epidemiological clustering.

The evidence that the latent period of Burkitt's lymphoma may be short, that is, months rather than years, stems from the observation of seasonal variation in disease onset and time-space clustering. The evidence for both of these effects is equivocal, but both are quite strong in the West Nile district of Uganda, where the disease has been most intensively studied epidemiologically. We have assumed that the interval between some final triggering event and onset of disease follows a log-normal distribution, and we have examined the range of values of the mean and variance of that distribution

Early warning system for West Nile virus risk areas, California, USA.

The Dynamic Continuous-Area Space-Time (DYCAST) system is a biologically based spatiotemporal model that uses public reports of dead birds to identify areas at high risk for West Nile virus (WNV) transmission to humans. In 2005, during a statewide epidemic of WNV (880 cases), the California Department of Public Health prospectively implemented DYCAST over 32,517 km2 in California. Daily risk maps were made available online and used by local agencies to target public education campaigns, surveillance, and mosquito control. DYCAST had 80.8% sensitivity and 90.6% specificity for predicting human

A civil action and statistical assessments of the spatial pattern of disease: do we have a cluster?

A reported "cluster" of excess childhood leukemia cases and possible environmental causes in Woburn, Massachusetts, formed a key motivation for the events described in the popular book and motion picture A Civil Action. Although statistical methods to assess spatial clustering existed prior to the events in Woburn, increasing interest in environmental risk factors and recent developments in geographical information systems and data availability prompt increased attention to such methods and their application to public health data. In this article, we review statistical and epidemiological conc

[Outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in a private apartment building].

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of legionnaires disease occurred in Zaragoza (Spain) in an uncommon environment such as a private apartment building was studied. METHODS: The investigation began upon notification of 3 patients admitted with pneumonia, living in the same apartment building. The suggestion of a common source of infection led to an active search for cases and a micro-environmental study of the zone where the patients lived, as well as a follow up study of other cases with hospital acquired pneumonia throughout the city. RESULTS: Six cases were detected over 9 days with a rate of 1.54%.

Differences in the epidemiology of childhood community-acquired bacterial meningitis between two ethnic populations cohabiting in one geographic area.

A comparison of the epidemiology of community-acquired bacterial meningitis between Jewish and Bedouin populations cohabiting one geographical area is reported here. During the years 1981 to 1985, 100 children younger than 13 years old with community-acquired bacterial meningitis were hospitalized. Seventy-one patients were younger than 12 months. The principal bacteria isolated were Haemophilus influenzae 42%; Streptococcus pneumoniae 29% and Neisseria meningitidis 20%. The case fatality rate was 12%. The chance of acquiring meningitis during the first 5 years of life was twice as common amon

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: patterns of worldwide occurrence and the significance of familial and sporadic clustering.

The worldwide epidemiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is presented from an analysis of 1,435 patients. In the United States, the average annual mortality rate is at least 0.26 deaths per million. Temporal-spatial clustering of cases was not found in the United States, but reports from other countries indicate that such clustering does occur. Fifteen percent of the cases were of the familial type, suggesting a genetic susceptibility to infection. Iatrogenic transmission by corneal transplantation and neurosurgical operations has occurred, and the possibility is raised that previous surg
